A bit harsh there from BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme!

Our Ken reacted to the final whistle in the semi-final against Portugal with the memorable words: "England are in the final of the World Cup! It is all over!

"A great victory by England against magnificent opponents. We will never forget this night at Wembley."

Wonder if he'll manage to conjure up something equally unforgettable should England triumph this afternoon?

Howard Horner:, external Where's all those people saying Greaves should have started now? Do not question Alf.

Chris Sanders:, external Looks like Beckenbauer and Charlton are marking each other out of the game. Will be difficult for them to influence the game.

Mark Tinklin:, external Not convinced Alf Ramsey's rigid 442 formation will ever catch on.

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 12:38 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

England are very fluid in midfield, with Nobby Stiles now popping up on the left.

And there's a chance! Goalscorer Geoff Hurst sends in a bullet header which Hans Tilkowski parries away, Alan Ball is on to it first but he is squeezed out of play.

  5. Postpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

We don't like to see this - Alan Ball giving referee Gottfried Dienst a piece of his mind after a questionable decision. Bobby Charlton wisely drags Ball away and England defend the free-kick well.

  6. Postpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Bobby Moore taking the game by the scruff of the neck, stepping out from defence and firing in a rising shot from 25 yards. His radar is just off for now though, hitting it high and wide. England look steady as we hit the half-hour mark.

Roger Hunt hasn't got in the game up front for England yet, his touch has not been up to scratch but he will run all day. That's the job he's been asked to do, to stretch the German defence.

England really need to get Bobby Charlton on the ball more often. He's been peripheral so far.

Josh Jackman:, external That was entirely down to the genius of Bobby Moore, floating a quick free-kick right on to Hurst's head. All up for grabs now.

Matt Freeman:, external There's some pretty poor football being played here - Hurst had the freedom of Wembley for that equaliser.

Richard Browne:, external Hard not to feel sorry for W Germany - playing the more technically proficient football and then undone by poor set-piece marking.

  9. Postpublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

The tempo has just turned down a notch after that electric opening 20 minutes or so. The Wembley pitch has had a lot of rain in the last few days and it looks heavy going.

Uwe Seeler gets a header in at the back post but he can't steer it on goal.

You can see Geoff Hurst's equaliser in the highlights tab above - if you missed it.

  10. BOOKINGpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Alan Ball drives in from the left this time, but he can't connect with Martin Peters who had made a gut-busting run through the middle.

And there's the first booking of the day - to Peters for holding back Cologne midfielder Wolfgang Overath.

    Walley Barnes
    Former Arsenal defender at Wembley

"A brilliant piece of play from Bobby Moore.

"He looked up and saw that the German defence was flat, and played it in quickly to his West Ham team-mate Geoff Hurst. Hurst is always looking for that early ball."

    It's in there!

England strike back thanks to a quick piece of thinking from skipper Bobby Moore! Moore takes a quick free-kick and finds West Ham team-mate Geoff Hurst, who takes advantage of some slack defending to head home from 12 yards out!

Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares?

Terrible challenge! Wolfgang Overath hacks down Alan Ball and really should have seen yellow. Referee Gottfried Dienst really was lenient there.

Adrian:, external Plenty of time to get back into this. Very poor defending there to gift West Germany the first goal. Come on lads.

Marc Brine:, external Just when we seemed to be taking control! Poor defensive header, and 1-0 down COME ON.

Andrew Lynn:, external West Germany need to park the bus now.

The German fans in the stadium making plenty of noise. They won the World Cup 12 years ago of course, is this another trophy?

England are rattled by that goal and Nobby Stiles is late on a challenge in midfield. Can Alf Ramsey's men regroup? There's a long way to go yet...

Andy, Armagh: It sounds like there are quite a few thousand German supporters inside Wembley this afternoon. Here's hoping that Alf's men can silence them.

  19. GOALpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Disaster! England had made a strong start but that's a shocker!

Left-back Ray Wilson doesn't get a good connection on a clearing header and Helmut Haller is able to gather the ball in, turn and drive a low shot past Jack Charlton and into the far corner.

Now then. This is a real test for England...
