Declan Bradshaw:, external Bobby Charlton needs to stop these long balls, going nowhere! Keep it.

Nathan:, external Hurst wasted a chance there, unsurprisingly. I don't understand why they picked him instead of Greaves.

Ben Norman:, external Gutted for Fulham's Johnny Haynes, if it wasn't for his injury 4 years ago he could be leading his country out today.

Away! Scramble in the German defence as Geoff Hurst goes up for a header, goalkeeper Hans Tilkowski hits the deck and he needs some treatment. The direct route could be crucial for England.

Nobby Stiles in like a lion to challenge Franz Beckenbauer. A superb ball of energy in that England midfield - but Germany win a corner through skipper Uwe Seeler. He needs to be watched.

A huge ironic cheer rings out as Lothar Emmerich hammers a shot wide from 20 yards. Poor finish from the German forward. End-to-end stuff so far though, as the Wembley crowd boo a German backpass to keeper Hans Tilkowski.

    Nothing wrong with that...

Young Alan Ball is providing the pace and drive down England's right - as Alf Ramsey's decision to play no wingers continues. There's been a lot of chat that Ball could be off to Everton after the tournament for a fee in excess of £100,000.

    £100k for a footballer! Madness.

  6. CLOSE!published at 12:08 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Chance! England go to sleep at the back and there's an opening for Siegfried Held - who drags a shot wide on the turn.

England will have to tighten up...

Bobby Charlton could be the main man for England today, as so often in the past, but he's got German midfielder Franz Beckenbauer for company in the opening stages. The energy of Martin Peters alongside him could also play a part.

England starting well, but a poor touch from Geoff Hurst sees the ball spin out of play.

There was panic in the build-up to the semi-final win over Portugal as trainer Harold Shepherdson forgot to buy chewing gum, which goalkeeper Gordon Banks likes to use to make his hands stickier and better able to handle the ball.

Shepherdson had to run to a nearby newsagents to purchase gum as the teams were in the tunnel. Let's hope he's more prepared today - as we are about to begin...

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"My first coach at Manchester United when I was 10 and Gary was 12 was Nobby Stiles - my dad was awestruck whenever he dropped us off.

"He would say to us 'he's won the World Cup!' and he couldn't believe it. I was so lucky to spend that time with him.

"When a coach tells you to play a certain way and he's won a World Cup, and a European Cup, you certainly listen. I'll never forget the impact he had on my career."

Edward Smith:, external A win this afternoon could usher in a new era of English dominance. Should be the first of many trophies in the next few years.

Harry Taylor:, external Surely a fit Greaves is a better choice than Hurst up front? West Ham players won't win us the World Cup.

Ben Dunmore:, external Big call by Alf Ramsey. Hope he doesn't rue this decision. Come on England 2-1.

    David Coleman
    BBC World Cup Report presenter

"The biggest audience ever to watch a football match in this country, well over 20 million people, must have seen the World Cup semi-final between England and Portugal. But the one man you really might have expected to watch it, wasn't.

"Because he was working on the night shift at a pit in Northumberland. Now that man is the father of the two brothers in the England side - Bobby and Jack Charlton. So partly for his benefit, because I understand he's been given a couple of hours off by the coal board to watch this recording, we're going to see again now the highlights.

"It was a game that's been hailed all over the world by experts as one of the finest in the history of the World Cup."

  20. Have I got news for you...published at 11:47 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Good news this week for those of you lucky enough to own a car and use these new-fangled 'motorways' - we heard this week that junctions on motorways are to be numbered to enable drivers to identify them more easily. No more 'turn off at Leicester' style directions.

The Vietnam War has been dominating the news bulletins, but that should be over by Christmas, and of course in what could be an omen BBC News reported a fortnight ago that three Lions broke out of their cage during a flight from Dusseldorf to London. The pilot made an emergency landing at Brussels after the Lions started clawing at his cabin door!

Are they up for the cup?
