Miracle Roch, external: Service or no service. Lineker has been poor today! Unacceptable.

Michael Linehan, external: Could see Lineker benefitting from a move to Spain, might suit Barcelona.

England have a free-kick, looked like an elaborate routine but Steve Hodge is offside and runs into Kenny Sansom!

Almost half-time now, England rather hanging on but Peter Shilton still hasn't had a great deal to do...

Tom McKeown, external: I reckon Lineker will blow Argentina away in the second half. But what do I know? I'm only three months old.

Matt Viney, external: Gotta love Maradona, never done anything unsavoury towards us and seems a funny guy

Diego Maradona is down and in need of some treatment, after running into the back of Terry Fenwick. Jimmy Hill calls him 'an actor.'

    Maradona is fit to continue...

    Kenny Sansom
    Former England defender

"We knew about Maradona, I'd played against him in a charity match and a friendly before where I gave away a penalty.

"Bobby Robson and Don Howe had thought about putting a man on him, but when you do that you lose your own player throughout the game.

"So we didn't do that, we just said 'whoever's nearest, pick him up.'"

"My disappointment at moment is that England haven't got the rhythm and the balance of the last two games. The nerves have got to them. They really do need to settle to frighten the Argentines."

All Argentina in the last 10 minutes, with that man Diego Maradona picking the ball up in space and running at people freely now. Another mazy run ends with a low shot which is easily blocked, but he is growing in stature.

    Maradona

    That is nice to see.

Diego Maradona throws the corner flag out of the way to clear some space and the linesman makes him pick it up and get it back to full fitness. Textbook manners.

Ryan J: Maradona is a very good, handy player but to be a great one he needs to win the World Cup.

"If England are going to win this game, goalkeeper Peter Shilton, the captain, will have an opportunity to prove he is the best. He has a lot more work to do yet. Not an easy task for England when Diego Maradona is in possession."

He's going to flick one, he's going to flick one! Maradona curls the free-kick over the wall, Peter Shilton is at full stretch and the ball fizzes just wide...

There's the first 'Mexican Wave' of the day. That won't catch on.

Great stuff again from Diego Maradona, beating two men with ease before running into Kenny Sansom and earning a free-kick. Maradona to take...

Brilliant! Brilliant stuff from Diego Maradona, extricating his way out of a tight corner with a wonderful body swerve and then a backheel into a team-mate.

This man can really make the difference. England had no answer to that, but thankfully Peter Shilton is out well to make a catch.

"We are looking for encouraging signs. Glenn Hoddle - who made a very shaky start - suddenly got himself away in the last attack and there are signs the Argentine defence can panic if put under pressure."

  17. Postpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Gary Lineker - great goalscorer that he is - relies on service, and he's had none so far at all. He's doing all his good work out in the channels.

Matthew Vose, external: England sensible with the backpass to Shilton to keep things calm. Such an important aspect of keeping control in a game.

Jamie Spence, external: Don't think the pass back to a goalkeeper should be allowed, sincerely hope this rule is looked into in the future!

  19. Postpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Time and again, Glenn Hoddle has gifted away possession. For such a talented man he has been very careless, which in this heat is not doing his team-mates any joy at all.

The crowd are up and whistling as an Argentina attack falls apart, there's a sense of frustration from the neutrals in the crowd. But halfway through the first half Bobby Robson will be reasonably happy. Peter Shilton hasn't had a save to make.
