"The conversation over coffee this morning was about the poor quality of refereeing in the tournament and most journalists around the world agree with that. They use the inexperienced referees or those from emerging countries in the vital games."

Argentina win a corner but it's tame and England can counter with pace. Gary Lineker peels away on the right but Glenn Hoddle floats a real 'Hollywood' pass out and it's easily dealt with. Poor from the Hod.

He's much, much better than that.

Diego Maradona already leading the England side a merry dance. Some lovely footwork on the edge of the box does Gary Stevens like a kipper but the shot is eventually blocked.

At the other end England's main man Gary Lineker has barely touched the ball.

    Kenny Sansom
    Former England defender

"Before the game Bobby Robson sat us down, calmed us down and picked the team. He relaxed us until his last sentence which was:

"Don't worry about those 60 million people watching back at home."

    Jimmy Hill
BBC pundit at the Azteca Stadium

"There are people in football who score goals and love it and there are others who like the arts and crafts. Peter Beardsley showed there he loves to score."

  9. CLOSE!published at 12:31 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

    Chance!

Argentina goalkeeper Nery Pumpido makes a hash of a routine collection, and Peter Beardsley whips it away from his toes as quick as you like. Beardsley is out wide on the right but a wonderful turn gets him into a shooting position.

The angle is acute but he goes for it - and finds the side-netting! A lovely attempt.

Enigmatroid, external: Pitch looks horrible - don't expect we'll be seeing much dribbling...

Joe crutwell, external: As long as we don't let Argentina and Maradona gain the upper hand in the final third I think we stand a good chance...

Argentina just starting to boss the ball now, with Jorge Burruchaga looking a threat from midfield too. Peter Reid and Glenn Hoddle need to get a grip of that central midfield.

  12. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

BBC commentator Barry Davies at the Azteca

"That's the first we've seen of the little man.

"And, great player that he is, it would be best if we don't see much more of him..."

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Brilliant, brilliant play from Diego Maradona! That's the first we've seen of him, picking up the ball on the right, jinking inside two men and then being flattened by a horrific tackle from Terry Fenwick.

The QPR hatchet man is straight in the book too, an early booking.

  14. The sporting year so farpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Bobby Robson's England side are hoping to reach their second World Cup semi-final this afternoon and provide the fans back home with a major sporting highlight of the year.

But what have been the other highs of 1986?

Liverpool edged out city rivals Everton to win the title, and sealed the double with victory in the FA Cup final too - beating Everton once more.

Greg LeMond became the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France, Jack Nicklaus won the Masters at the age of 46, Joe Johnson beat Steve Davis 18-12 to win the World Snooker championship and Ivan Lendl won the French Open.

    Big names. Big games.

  15. Postpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Gary Stevens is caught out of position at right-back after a brief foray forward. England's full-backs have been key to their attacking force in the last few games but it's important to keep shape too.

  16. Reid all about itpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

"I'm like a maniac, at the end of the day. I'm like a doggie barking at your door."

Not my words, but prose from the lyrical genius that is George Michael from today's new number one single, 'The Edge of Heaven.' Wham's last single of course before their sad split, anyone heading to the farewell gig at Wembley next weekend?

That song was actually written about the playing style of Everton midfielder Peter Reid - he'll be haring around in the shadow of Diego Maradona this afternoon...

  17. Postpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Trevor Steven in hard on Diego Maradona as the Napoli number 10 looks to pick it up in space. Not surprisingly, given the midday sun in Mexico, the game has started at a reasonably slow pace. Even stuff thus far.

  18. Postpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Kenny Sansom is on the end of a meaty challenge from Jose Luis Brown in the opening stages before Steve Hodge stops Diego Maradona's first run at source. Got to get tight...

  19. FAST FORWARDpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

    Kenny Sansom
    Former England defender

"It was a midday kick-off but we had got slightly used to the heat by that stage.

"In the first game against Portugal I was drinking fluids all through the game and I still lost 11lbs. It was very, very hot.

"But we were told to take our time with throw-ins, free-kicks, that sort of thing. You've got to keep the ball well in that heat."
