Tottenham manager on World Cup Grandstand

"Paul Gascoigne has been doing very well, but for me Des Walker has been the outstanding player so far. He looks unbeatable and Germany's strikers can't get by him. England have bossed this game and now we look favourites, I cannot wait for this second half."

"All the knockers and the doubters have been proved wrong, we have played really nice and tight in that first half. Against Cameroon we had a certain amount of luck but against Belgium I thought it was good defensive play.

"Throughout the tournament England have played well and deserved the little bit of luck they have had. And in this match we have had no luck yet otherwise we would have scored a goal."

Applause all around the stands as the first half comes to an end. Goalless, but not boring by a long way. A cracking opening 20 minutes from England but West Germany then came into it.

    Trevor Brooking
    Former England midfielder

"England don't need a psychological lift because they have been playing so well - there has not been a weakness in the team so far and they are ahead on points in this first half. Whether Rudi Voller was slightly short of fitness I don't know, but there was never a question of him staying on if it's a pull or a tear of the calf."

  12. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:08 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Oooof! Have some of that! Des Walker clatters into Karl-Heinz Riedle, very late, and he's a lucky man to escape a yellow card.

The Germans roll the free-kick smartly across the box, Klaus Augenthaler drills in the shot and Peter Shilton turns it away.

Shane:, external Platt must score, he must. He has two in the World Cup so far, he can be the hero England need.

Al:, external WADDLE! Blimey. Bet we'll be talking about him by the end of the match!

Mark:, external England playing with lots of confidence. Would so love to get through and get revenge for the Hand of God four years ago.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand

"The lads have been doing great, they have started really well and have done exactly what we said they should at the start, which is to get tight. The Germans are the ones who have been slack so far and we have to be delighted at the moment."

  16. Postpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    Trevor Brooking
    Former England midfielder

"Rudi Voller has just pulled up on the far side, he was sprinting down the line past his marker Des Walker and went down after kicking the ball out of play. If it's a kick he will be OK after a bit of treatment but if it's a pull he may be in trouble."

  18. WADDLE!published at 16:02 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Genius! What an effort from Chris Waddle!

The whistle had gone so it wouldn't have counted, but what a brilliant try from Waddle as he shoots from inside the centre circle!

He catches the drive as sweet as a nut, it is dropping in and Bodo Illgner makes a fine save, pushing it onto the bar...

  19. OUCH!published at 16:00 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Problems here! Rudi Voller is down on the far side after chasing down a loose ball, that looks like a muscle problem and the permed one may be in trouble.

  20. Postpublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Peter Shilton almost caught out there, he dashes off his line to sweep the ball up but Jurgen Klinsmann gets there first, he turns to try and ping in a cross but it's well blocked by Paul Gascoigne, who found himself as the last man.

Bobby Robson looks pensive on the bench but he must be delighted with this start.
