Manchester United David Moyes, speaking to BBC Sport: "We had a lot the ball, passing, and controlled the majority of the game. But we didn't have a cutting edge and got done on the counter attack. We gave away two dreadful goals.

"I've no arguments with the penalty. But it was terrible mistake, because David De Gea would've just picked the ball up.

"We couldn't find the telling pass, or clever play in the final third that makes the difference. I thought we did well, were the better team at 2-0 down in the first half.

"We'll do everything we can to win the remaining four games. We are under way with what we are doing to improve next season and try to give ourselves a better chance to compete at the top end of the table."

Ben Cotterill:, external Wayne Rooney has only scored one goal this season against the top four teams. Does he only score against the weaker teams?

Adham Ibrahim:, external Rooney was again the worst player on the pitch for United.

Simon Yates:, external England should build a team around Raheem Sterling not Wayne Rooney.

Here's more from Everton manager Roberto Martinez, speaking about David Moyes: "A lot has been said about his return. His reception was the standing ovation he got against West Ham on the last day of last season. He is now Manchester United manager and there is huge competition between the two clubs.

"What he achieved at Everton will never be forgotten. The next three games are exciting and we will try and get as many points as possible. We don't expect Arsenal to drop points easily, we are just looking our ourselves and trying to achieve the maximum number of points we can."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "It was more than pleasing. It was an outstanding result and the first time we have done the double over Manchester United since 1969. I couldn't be prouder.

"We knew we were facing a very good side. Their away record is excellent but we were focused and controlled the game and were electrifying on the counter-attack.

"We worked hard to keep a clean sheet, that is difficult to do when you take a two-goal lead, especially against Manchester United. It speaks volumes of the togetherness and focus of this team."

  7. Stats analysispublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 20 April 2014

Seamus Coleman was absolutely outstanding today, running the game down the right-hand side. His passing accuracy was 93%, he created six chances and he picked up an assist for Kevin Mirallas's goal. By contrast, Manchester United's Nani, who was actually playing as a right-winger rather than an overlapping full-back, had a passing accuracy of 78%, squandering possession eight times, and he created just one chance before he was hauled off.

Remind me again, which player cost £17m and which one cost £150,000?

James in Wandsworth: If I was David Moyes when Sir Alex asked him for the job, I would have said "thanks but no thanks". I feel for Moyes, his old team have forsaken him and are doing better and now he is in a pickle. Help him someone.

Kevin in Hornchurch: Moyes motionless. Rooney restless. Man United clueless. How far have they fallen?

Jamie in London: I truly feel sorry for David Moyes and Sir Alex is a wretched friend. The worst is thing to happen to Moyes is knowing Sir Alex Ferguson!

Victor Chatfield:, external The problem is that Wayne Rooney only has one good game in every six. This is one of the other five, but with his contract, he's un-subbable!

Jon Goodway:, external Rooney once again totally anonymous. Can't believe United have made him their talisman and maybe captain next season.

Roberto Cavazos:, external The English media will continue to make excuses for Wayne Rooney, as always. He should have been allowed to leave United.

Everton's Leighton Baines, who opened the scoring from the spot: "I think it (Moyes coming back) did (add extra spice to the game) for the fans. It meant a lot for them and the victory was for them as we let them down in midweek by losing to Crystal Palace.

"We wanted to respond and show that we had that grit and we showed that today."

On the penalty: "I made my mind up before the game about which way I was going to go."

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Goodison Park

"Everton's improvement under Roberto Martinez is brought into even sharper focus by the comfortable manner in which they dealt with Manchester United. This was a chastening day for former Everton manager David Moyes as he presides over a team in decline. The Everton fans showed no mercy to Moyes, clearly relishing his discomfort."

"Another excellent performance from Roberto Martinez's Everton side. Seamus Coleman was outstanding and probably the best player on the pitch, but overall man for man they were superior.

"Manchester United just offered little and were no threat. Wayne Rooney had little impact on the game and it was a comfortable win for Everton."

Arlan Kotb:, external This is the same team that won the title last year, you can't solely blame David Moyes.

Paige Turner:, external David Moyes critics are missing the point. He couldn't turn down the job. They should go ask Sir Alex instead. First Bebe. Now Moyes.

Sam Evans:, external At times last year people were questioning where Liverpool were going under Brendan Rogers and now look. Give Moyes time to sort his own team.
