South American football expert Tim Vickery, speaking on Match of the Day about protests in Brazil: "It surprised everyone during the Confederations Cup. Not even the organisers of the initial protest a year ago imagined that. But after it happened last year, after a political generation flexed its muscles, I think it was inevitable we would see a repeat performance this time round.

"The protests are planned outside the stadiums for every game. How this pans out I don't think anyone knows for sure. Two situations could make things worse - police reaction, or the nightmare scenario for Brazilian authorities which is Brazil exiting the tournament early.

"Disappointing performances on the field could fuel the fire of anger. You do wonder if Brazil get hometown decisions more often because it was would be a disaster if Brazil exited this tournament early."

Former England captain Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

"When Luiz Scolari looks back at that game he will demand a lot more than seven touches from Fred, the Brazil centre-forward. Fred won the penalty but you are going to get 10 penalties every game for players putting their hands on the shirt. It was never a penalty. Any team that wins the World Cup needs little bit of luck. Maybe Brazil got theirs tonight."

Former England captain Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

"Oscar was the best player on the pitch, he looked very fit, his energy levels were very high and he was always looking to get the ball to Neymar or to Fred. He was strong in the tackle, his overall performance was brilliant.

"But in defence Brazil looked vulnerable. A defender's first thought should be to defend. Having the two full-backs so far forward works to Brazil's disadvantage and teams will look to play take advantage of that weakness."

Danny Murphy on Match of the Day

"I think there were a lot of incidents the referee got wrong. The penalty decision was the worst of them all. Just seeing it again I cannot believe it was given. The penalty was poor, the goalkeeper got two hands to it. The goalkeeper really should have a look in the mirror at himself.

"However, what was not lucky was that Brazil did change the system really early, moving Neymar off the wing and putting him in the number 10 role and that was an important move in my opinion."

Former England captain Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

"Neymar was lucky to stay on the pitch. If that was any other team, any other player, he would have seen red. He actually looks at the Croatia player, that is why is guilty and very very lucky not have got a straight red, he should have been sent off and minutes later he gets the goal.

"Stipe Pletikosa should move his feet quicker but Neymar is a lucky guy."

    Match of the Day

"I think Croatia were well organised, dangerous on the counter and they worked tirelessly. With a bit more luck from the referee, and with their goalkeeper playing a bit better I might add, then they could have got a point."

Aamer, Nottingham: Best player on the pitch was number four for Croatia, Perisic. Brazil unconvincing.

Chris:, external Kovac is right, but he should move on. Play like that in the next two games and Croatia will qualify for the last 16.

Brazil forward Neymar: "It was better than I thought.

"I was hoping that we'd win, but to be able to debut in a World Cup with a brace is an unmeasurable joy."

Tim:, external Not a convincing victory by any means, but proof Brazil can fight back when under pressure.

Jamie:, external Tonight's match has unfortunately left me with a sour taste... Not want you want from the first game of the tournament.

Richard Ashdown:, external Oscar deserved that goal... and Fred deserved an Oscar!

Andrew: That 3-1 victory flattered Brazil hugely. Croatia were the better team for large portions of that game, and could have nicked a result had they had a goalscorer leading their line tonight. Much improvement needed from Brazil if they are to lift the World Cup on home soil.

Shane, St Albans: Brazil not convincing at all. Not a surprise, a young mixed bag of players, no qualifiers to test them and relatively low in world rankings due to playing such soft teams in friendlies. Germany all the way.

Niko Kovac looks a lot like your man from Inception and the Dark Knight Rises. He's been in his own Hollywood blockbuster tonight, with the potential for a sequel later in the tournament as well.

Croatia boss Niko Kovac: "If that's how we start the World Cup, we'd better give it up now and go home.

"We talk about respect, that wasn't respect, Croatia didn't get any.

"If that's a penalty, we don't need to play football anymore. Let's play basketball instead, it's a shame."

Normally post-match quotes are dull and ordinary. We've started the tournament with a bang though...

  18. Text us on 81111published at 23:16 British Summer Time 12 June 2014

Tom, Dorset: Why are we frightened by this Brazil team again? That was a poor performance, Croatia would have won with a fair referee and a decent goalkeeper. Against another title contender this Brazil team will struggle if they repeat that performance.
