  2. The scene in Sao Paulopublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 12 June 2014

    Ben Smith
BBC Sport correspondent at the Arena De Sao Paulo

"The weather here is cool and overcast and we have been warned to leave two hours to cover the eight or so miles to the stadium because the traffic is expected to be awful. It's a national holiday here in Sao Paulo, as it is in many parts of Brazil, and that's for one reason and one reason only - so people can watch their team play Croatia later on.

"Outside my hotel window helicopters are buzzing around and Brazilian TV is, as you would expect, wall-to-wall football build-up. It promises to be quite a day... "

If you ask me, there's nothing quite like seeing Brazil in a World Cup. From the days of Careca, Romario, Branco, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Denilson (not the Arsenal flop) the boys in canary yellow have had me in a World Cup trance.

But who are you most looking forward to seeing in this summer's footballfest? Is there anyone you are desperate for your team to sign? Any inside info on who the ones to watch may be?

"Why is it that adults aren't supposed to go mad about anything? You have to keep a lid on it. And if you don't then people are apparently entitled to say what they like.

"You haven't grown up. You're a moron. Your conversation is trivial and boorish. You can't express your emotional needs. You can't relate to your children." And you die, lonely and miserable.

"But you know, what the hell, every cloud has a silver lining."

Not my words, the words of Nick Hornby in Fever Pitch. He's bang on though isn't he?

But for the next 31 days, 64 matches and approximately 250 hours of TV viewing you have permission to be as excitable as you possibly can. I don't care how old you are, it only comes round once every four years so you'd best make the most of it.

You've hung your wallchart on your bedroom wall, spent hours poring over a team selection for your office fantasy football league, spent hundreds of quid on stickers which you've had to hide from the other half and called your new dog Houndinho.

You've officially got World Cup fever.

But you are not alone. You are in good hands and you are amongst friends. We've been buzzing for months about the greatest sporting event on the planet* and it's all about to start.

So kick back, disconnect the phone and settle in for what will hopefully be a belting month of football...

*Before anyone writes in, I was at the Olympics. It was great - but it's no World Cup.

    "Giant by thine own nature,

"Thou art beautiful, thou art strong, an impavid colossus,

"And thy future mirrors thy greatness."

The words of the Brazilian national anthem could have been written especially for the current number 10.

It's a good job Neymar is a confident lad, as in just a few hours' time the eyes of 201 million Brazilians - and maybe a few billions more across the globe - will be zeroed in on the Barcelona forward.

The nation demands success. The world is waiting. Can Neymar and the Selecao deliver?

  7. Postpublished at 07:04 British Summer Time 12 June 2014

World Cup hosts Brazil are expected to face Croatia with the same starting line-up that beat Spain in last summer's Confederations Cup final.

That means playmaker Oscar is likely to start despite his recent poor form and a Brazilian media lobby for his Chelsea team-mate Willian.

Croatia are without suspended striker Mario Mandzukic, so Nikica Jelavic or Eduardo will deputise.

Sime Vrsaljko will play at left-back in place of the injured Danijel Pranjic.
