The Indomitable Lions have finally come alive in the last few minutes, as another corner causes Mexico problems. This time, Alexandre Song fires in a fierce ball, which Stephane Mbia gets in front of Hector Moreno to meet but powers his header wide.

Now it is Samuel Eto'o's turn to fall victim of the linesman's flag when he stabs home from yards out after a ball into the box squeezed through to him following a corner. No doubt about that decision, though, he was offside.

"That's a terrible decision by the linesman. The goal should have stood. It was a great run and great ball by Herrera and a fantastic finish."

A huge roar goes up inside the stadium as Mexico think they take the lead, only for it to be chalked off for offside. It was a contentious decision though as Hector Herrara whipped in a perfect cross from the right and Giovani dos Santos got away from his marker to volley home. Looked onside.

Andrew via text: No Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez in the Mexico line-up? Very strange decision from the Mexico boss. He has a great record in the big games, even if he has been out of form lately. Time will tell if it's a wise decision or not.

It is still all Mexico as their pacy attack has the Cameroon defence pinned deep. Paul Aguilar tries to cross but his effort is hacked away, only to Miguel Layun, though, who cracks off the first shot in anger from way outside the area, but it is no trouble for goalkeeper Charles Itandje.

"Cameroon are sitting very deep in these early exchanges. They're letting Mexico have lots of possession. Mexico are knocking the ball around but they're not getting anywhere."

Mexico are getting wide at every opportunity in these early stages and Miguel Layun finds a bit of space behind Aurelien Chedjou on the right. He crosses low but it is into the sidenetting. Mexico appeal for a corner, thinking the ball might have taken a little touch off Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

"Two World Cup under-achievers kick off their campaign in pouring rain in Natal on Brazil's normally sun-drenched north east coast.

"Mexico have got out of the group stage at the last five finals but have gone no further. They have used four coaches in a befuddled 41-day spell during qualifying. Mexico defender Rafael Marquez creates a record by captaining a side for a fourth successive World Cup.

"Cameroon haven't reached the second round since 1990 and seven of this side were at World Cup 2010."

The Cameroon players sing their national anthem just as proudly as their opponents, but the Cameroon fans are definitely struggling to overcome the noise of the Mexico supporters. It is just an absolute sea of green and sombreros in the stands.

Mexico, all in green, take up their positions on the pitch. Cameroon are in their yellow away strip. Kick off seconds away...

The players are out on the pitch and line up for the national anthems. First up is Mexico's, a very jovial but also rousing piece that has fans, players and coaching staff belting out the words. Mexico fans are definitely in the majority.

Samuel Eto'o will be the man tasked with scoring the goals for Cameroon but just as important for their hopes of progressing from a tricky group is the man at the other end of the pitch.

Goalkeeper Charles Itandje was on the books of Liverpool from 2007 until 2010, but the Itandje of today will be largely unrecognisable to Reds fans.

The 31-year-old was a rock during Cameroon's qualifying campaign, making a number of crucial saves, notably keeping a clean sheet in the first leg of their play-off against Tunisia. He will again need to be at his best if Cameroon are to upset the odds in Group A.

The very, very eagle-eyed among you will notice that Miguel Layun has #TodoEsCulpaDeLayin (It is all Layun's fault) embroidered on his football boots.

Apparently, this acts as a reminder for the years of abuse he suffered on social media when fans questioned his place in the side for both Mexico and his club America.

Often after America games, that hashtag would trend but his league-title winning penalty in May last year won over his critics, and he moved on from that with steadily improved performances on the international stage.

While eyes will be on former Barcelona and Tottenham forward Giovani dos Santos to be the man to fire Mexico to victory today, for the football hipsters out there Miguel Layun could well prove to be the key player for the Aztecs.

The attack-minded full-back was once the nation's scapegoat for their poor performances in 2013, but a string of fine displays under Miguel Herrera has won his critics round.

Layun has developed into a key component in Herrera's 5-3-2 formation, with his pace and guile helping to swiftly turn defence into attack.

Kick off is not far away and although the rain has subsided a bit, the Estadio das Dunas is certainly not packed to capacity. The fans that are there are very vocal and very colourful, but between them there are plenty of empty blue seats on show.

Mexico will take to the field in a 5-3-2 formation, with Giovani dos Santos taking the place of Javier Hernandez in the side. Manchester United striker Hernandez is in his worst run of form at international level, having failed to find the net in his last nine outings for Mexico.

Hernandez's fellow striker Oribe Peralta is bang in form, though, with eight goals in his last six games, and he will likely be their main dangerman today.
