"Out of nowhere, Robin van Persie has just headed one of the great World Cup goals. I even saw some Spanish applauding, and it's certainly increased the Netherlands' support among the neutrals. That one is going to be shown time and again, as it the massive high-five Van Persie performed with his club and national team coach Louis van Gaal.

"The Dutch are hugging as they leave the field for half-time, the Spanish look shellshocked. There is a buzz of disbelief, amazement, excitement, awe - call it what you like - sweeping round the stadium and what a second half we have in store."

"One of the hardest things as a centre-forward is when you have time. I always used to finish in the same way and that was my way of not thinking when I was running."

Robin van Persie only had 15 touches in that first half. But the last one was pretty decent...

"It's a great pass from Daley Blind on the angle, Robin van Persie is not offside, and produces an absolutely top-drawer finish. You couldn't see that coming!

"How football can turn in seconds, David Silva missed that chance and Netherlands score with their next move. And now they will fancy it. Silva will be kicking himself."

  5. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

All square at the break then. A dubious penalty, a brilliant pass and then a ridiculous header. Big players providing big moments!

"What a fantastic pass from Andres Iniesta. Not picking up the runner is the only problem with the three centre-backs. David Silva wants to caress the ball all the time but if he had smashed that it would be 2-0 to Spain.

"Spain are then punished and the reason why it's a fantastic goal is not just the pass and run but that it had to be perfect from Robin van Persie to beat Iker Casillas and it was."

End to end stuff. Spain should have made it 2-0 and seconds later Robin van Persie scores with an extraordinary effort.

Brilliant improvisation! He's not been in the game but Netherlands captain Robin van Persie has them level with a superb header.

Daley Blind plays a 45-yard crossfield pass, Van Persie races after it and dives to flick a header over Iker Casillas and into the net from a full 16 yards out.

That was brilliant. There was only one way to score from there, and he found the way superbly.

It should be 2-0! But that is the pass of the World Cup right there!

Andres Iniesta plays a precise throughball on the run, it's inch perfect for the run of David Silva and he's clean through on goal. Silva tries to chip Jasper Cillessen but the keeper stands up well and makes a fine save.

Put your foot through it Dave!

"Jonathan de Guzman and Nigel de Jong need a little bit of help, they are getting outnumbered in the Netherlands midfield. Spain are dominating possession and eventually that will lead to more opportunities. Spain will just be patient now, waiting for that right pass."

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

That's a cynical one! Stefan de Vrij drops the shoulder and just takes David Silva clean out. It's a clear booking as we tick toward half-time.

Arjen Robben is not a happy man as he breaks in behind only to see the offside flag raised. It's a tight one but the Bayern Munich flier was just offside...

"It's funny with Spain as it appears that they are just getting used to playing with a centre-forward. Don't you just love their play - they will have the ball in any situation no matter how tightly they are being marked."

"In the last five minutes Netherlands have retained the ball a bit better. They need to do that so that they get their spare players and the two wing backs into the game, that way they will get up the pitch and create chances.

"It's been a very good game to watch, considering the conditions and how hot it is. Also the pitch has been good, a lovely surface to move the ball on."

Barcelona players had scored Spain's last eight World Cup goals by the way. Xabi Alonso is the first Real Madrid man to score for Spain since Raul in 2006.

All credit to the Dutch, they have had a good spell since going behind. Another flowing move ends with Wesley Sneijder teeing up Nigel de Jong on the edge of the box, he cuts on to his left foot and thrashes a shot right at Iker Casillas.

Spain currently on 67% of possession.

David:, external Never a penalty in a million years. Clear dive. Honestly thought he'd blew the whistle to book Costa!

Spain have won their last four World Cup matches 1-0. A fifth will do them nicely.

But here's an opening for the Netherlands! Daley Blind swings over a great ball from the left, Sergio Ramos misses it and Robin van Persie just can't connect behind him. That was a real opening.

"It was a fantastic pass and Diego Costa was definitely onside, but I'm not sure it was penalty. It looks to me like Diego Costa just stands on the Netherlands defender Stefan De Vrij's leg.

    Alonso

"Spain have deserved it with their play, they gradually got into the game and the movement of the three little geniuses in midfield has been fantastic. It will be difficult now for the Dutch. I think the Dutch are so open that if they keep playing like this Spain are certain to score more goals. They will just play around them."
