"Diego Costa hasn't scored so far but his runs have been very good. He has shaped to shoot and Stefan de Vrij caught his trailing foot. Well done the referee."

For the third game in a row we have a refereeing decision to discuss. It looked to me like Diego Costa trod on the defender's leg as he slid past him. Contentious for sure.

Excellent penalty. Xabi Alonso steps up and drills it into the bottom corner, goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen goes the right way but can't reach it.

Diego Costa's run is great again, he gets in behind, cuts inside Stefan de Vrij and goes down. The ref gives a penalty, but was there much contact there?

Amir: Netherlands playing with a backline of five and what seemingly is a young backline led by Ron Vlaar. But don't worry he has been used to that in the Premier League.

Lovely, intricate stuff again from Spain as Andres Iniesta and David Silva combine down the left of the box to win a corner.

Sergio Ramos is then close to connecting with the set-piece. There's a man who ended the season in good goalscoring touch...

BBC Sport's David Ornstein in Salvador

"Sergio Busquets gets clattered late twice in quick succession and we are now seeing an element of bite between the two sets of players. The Spanish media team to my right are throwing their arms around in anger. Spain's usual rhythm is certainly being disrupted."

  9. Postpublished at 20:21 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

Spain have turned it up a gear and are really threatening now. Ron Vlaar is again the man with the block as David Silva this time springs in behind. Again there is hesitation though and the Manchester City man's effort is well closed down.

Donald:, external The Brazilians are clearly having none of Diego Costa. The case of a prodigal son who will never come back.

Jonathan:, external De Jong & De Guzman are the footballing equivalent of the Kray Twins, wouldn't like to mess with them.

VB:, external Definitely should book De Jong. Always. Book him before the game.

Diego Costa does get a shot away this time, after a cute pass through from David Silva, but he hoiks it wide and high into the stand behind the goal. There's a definite fresh look to Spain with an out-and-out striker though. He wants it in behind.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein in Salvador

"There were Spanish fans with their heads in hands as 30-year-old Wesley Sneijder burst through on goal, a collective gasp rolling through the stadium. Diego Costa is the pantomime villain here, booed by the Brazilian spectators with every touch, and the Dutch are only too happy to join in."

Oooof! Nigel de Jong, who karate kicked Xabi Alonso in the 2010 final, is at it again, digging Sergio Busquets in the ribs with a crafty elbow.

Referee Nicola Rizzoli lets it slide this time...

"Very good closing down by the Spanish and they nick the ball in midfield. Diego Costa's first touch let him down. A better one and he would have had a shot on goal. The last couple of minutes the Spanish have found a little bit of space in the Dutch half, but Spain don't look set up brilliantly in defence either."

You'll never beat Ron Vlaar! Great tackle from the Aston Villa man but should Diego Costa have been more clinical there?A great chance for Spain as the proposed Chelsea target was played in on goal, he hesitated on his left foot before pulling the trigger and Vlaar was able to get across and make the block.

For £32m, you may expect him to at least get the shot off...

    Tony Pulis
Crystal Palace manager on BBC Radio 5 live

"That was an example of the two Netherlands forwards pulling wide to work a gap at the heart of the Spanish defence. Wesley Sneijder had a fantastic opportunity but unfortunately hasn't finished it. After just giving Xabi Alonso massive praise he makes a poor pass like that."

"Wesley Sneijder didn't seriously trouble the goalkeeper as it was a fantastic height for Iker Casillas to save it. Playing against Spain, you never know when you will get another chance like that."

Here's the Dutch line-up. The Dutch Lahm, Daley Blind, is at left wing-back tonight. He may move into midfield later on in the tournament.

Spain kick into life after that early scare, with Andres Iniesta shooting over from 25 yards.

It's started at a slower pace than Brazil's opener last night but it's compelling viewing thus far.
