England captain Steven Gerrard, addressing the media ahead of the match with Italy: "We are certainly not worried about the pitch or conditions. We'll stick to our plan and make it difficult for Italy. We'll be brave and bold in attack. Obviously it's warm and it's going to be a tough game. But we're going to be fine and I'm sure we'll be able to cope. I've just been on the pitch and it's totally fine. The grass is a perfect length."

  4. Ferdinand Q+Apublished at 22:33 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

Rio Ferdinand has been answering a selection of your questions on the BBC Sport Facebook page., external

Here are a selection of his replies:

Did you see that result coming tonight?

I don't think anybody would have called that result today if they were being serious!

How much pressure do you feel playing at a World Cup?

It is a huge pressure. You know all the country is watching you and expectations are high and that you need to deliver for them. The team that deals with that pressure best goes onto win it.

Can a European team win the World Cup?

I think it is possible. Anything is possible in a World Cup. I don't think the conditions are as bad as everybody expected. If the rain continues then it evens things out a bit.

Who will win the World Cup?

Before a ball was kicked I went for Brazil. They didn't play particularly well in the first game but they won 3-1. Argentina have a chance as well.

Can England beat Italy and Uruguay?

If they do, then I think most people in the country will be surprised. Will they qualify? I think yes. Both those teams are very dangerous, especially with Suarez for Uruguay and Italy with all their experience.

More from Roy Hodgson: "We are not concerned about the heat. We're not making special contingency plans. I can't believe how friendly the people of Manaus have been towards us. We thought a trip to the shopping mall might be nice for the players, a chance to get out of the hotel. Unfortunately we had to abort the trip because we were mobbed."

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Manaus

"England manager Roy Hodgson was in bullish form as he addressed the media at Manaus's Arena Amazonia. Captain Steven Gerrard was smiling and relaxed, while if there was one abiding message that came from Hodgson it was that this England squad is mentally and physically ready and could not be better prepared.

"Hodgson gave away little about team selection but he reflected the positive mood that has been a trademark of this England squad as it made its way through Portugal to Miami and on to Manaus for the start of their World Cup campaign against Italy."

  8. Postpublished at 22:23 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson: "I've been on the pitch and it is possible to play good football on it. We'll be perfectly happy to play on it. We are here to try and win it (World Cup), to try and play our best and we're here to give such a good account of ourselves people at home feel proud. But now the talking is over. Bring the game on."

This time tomorrow and England's preparations for their opening group game against Italy will be all but complete. Manager Roy Hodgson was in bullish mood as he addressed a news conference a short while ago. The highlights? He's happy with the pitch and has no concerns about the heat. He also wants to do the country proud.

  10. Postpublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

Roy Hodgson has just been asked about the Netherlands result at his pre-Italy news conference in Manaus. "When we left the team hotel it was 1-1. Spain were playing well and it took a great goal for Holland to equalise. So I'm a bit surprised to hear that it was 5-1."

"Spain started the tournament four years ago and got beaten by Switzerland, but it is the manner of the defeat tonight that makes you ask questions."

Bertie, Kent: I can see Spain going out. If all the teams beat Australia as expected and Spain only manage a draw with Chile next which is very possible. Chile and Netherlands play in the final game knowing that a draw gets them both through.

Michael, London: Spain have returned Total Football to the Dutch following an eight-year loan. There were substantial late fees.

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England and Manchester United defender

"Robin van Persie hit the post with one effort against Spain with a right foot strike but he did the same twice in training during the last week of the season and scored both times.

"A lack of football from Iker Casillas maybe showed today and, I don't want to get anyone out of the team, but David De Gea is a more than capable replacement."

  14. Postpublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 13 June 2014

    Thierry Henry
    Former France and Arsenal striker

"I'm going to give the credit to the Dutch. They took it from Spain. You have to own it, they went out there and they had no fear. I was questioning if they would be fazed but they weren't."

Stewart:, external Lordy. Like watching an empire crumble to dust in 45 minutes.

Melissa:, external That was like the Netherlands team of old... the days when Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard et al made other teams look stupid.

Nathan:, external Wow Netherlands, that was insane, fast-paced attacking football at its best. Countered so, so quickly Spain had no chance.

"The Netherlands were sensational. That goal just before half time gave them unbelievable confidence and it could have and should have been seven or eight.

"Some of the performances - Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Daley Blind down that wing. They were absolutely brilliant. I have never seen that Spain back four pulled around as much as they were tonight.

"Blind gave Cesar Azpilicueta the runaround. He was up and down that wing but not just that, the quality of the balls he put in were brilliant."

    Tony Pulis
Crystal Palace manager on BBC Radio 5 live

"Vicente Del Bosque is working with players he has known for a long, long time. I don't think he will need to tell the players how poor they were in the second half. They have to dust themselves down.

"They got beaten first time round last time, although not the hammering they got tonight. They didn't take the chance when David Silva could have scored and players like Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben can change games in a second. Netherlands thoroughly deserved to win this match."

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England and Manchester United defender

"We saw some beautiful goals today, with Arjen Robben running past Sergo Ramos and scoring one of them and that is what you want in the World Cup.

"Iker Casillas has had a bit of a nightmare today, although he was fouled for the third goal."
