Former England footballer Rio Ferdinand at the Maracana

On marking Edin Dzeko: "He is big but the thing that sticks out for me is his movement. When the ball goes wide he comes alive and he can be out of the game but then score."

On marking Sergio Aguero: "He's been my hardest opponent to play against. He is quick, strong and direct. When he gets you stood up he can go either side and that is not good for a defender."

On marking Lionel Messi: "He is one footed but he can go either way as well. The thing about him is he is cute upstairs and is a threat with or without the ball. He can take you into areas you don't want to go. He will make a run and ask you the question of whether you want to go and mark him."

  3. Argentina v Bosnia (23:00 BST)published at 22:52 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Former Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze on past criticisms of Lionel Messi: "It was silly because the press even said Leo didn't want to sing the national anthem.

"Personally, it made me laugh when the same journalists would later say wonderful things about Leo."

    Alan Shearer
    BBC Sport

"It is a magnificent achievement for Bosnia-Hercegovina to be here so anything else will be a bonus. I think they can get out of the group even though they have a tough first game."

    Neil Lennon
    Former Celtic manager

"You can sense what playing for Bosnia is going to mean to the players, it will be interesting to see their faces when the national anthem is played. It is a very proud nation who have suffered a lot, it is amazing what football can do."

"Edin Dzeko is a talisman for them, he is in the form of his life after a brilliant season for Manchester City. Bosnia scored 30 goals in qualifying and he scored a third of them. Dzeko is the go-to guy tonight. I think they are a really dangerous team."

  10. The immortal clubpublished at 22:49 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

"In 571 minutes at World Cup finals Lionel Messi has scored just one goal, the same number as Matthew Upson and Gary Breen. In 754 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo has only one more than the England and Ireland centre-halves.

"To put that into goalscoring context, Denmark's comparatively prosaic forward Jon Dahl Tomasson has five. Pele ended with 12, and the Brazilian Ronaldo had 15."

  11. Argentina v Bosnia-Hercegovina (23:00 BST)published at 22:45 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

    Alan Shearer
    BBC Sport

"A new manager comes in for Argentina, gives Lionel Messi the captaincy and he responds with 10 goals in 12 games and that shows even the best players need to be loved.

"It is a massive tournament for him. He is the best I have seen in my time. What he can do with a football, he can go either way and is a nightmare for the opposition."

  12. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

    Tim Vickery
South American football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

"It is interesting because Argentina's base system in qualifying was 4-3-3 set up to give Lionel Messi as much space as possible, so why has it been changed to 5-3-2? Previously, when the manager Alejandro Sabella has used this formation it was when he did not have Messi. So why use it tonight?

"Perhaps Sabella is feeling the pressure a bit. Despite his age he has very little experience, and I don't think he is enjoying the job. He was a bit tetchy in the news conference yesterday so maybe he has gone for something a bit more defensive.

"He has said before that when his team is attacking he closes his eyes and prays, because they can be a little exposed defensively, so perhaps he has gone for a more protected backline so he can keep his eyes open."

    Neil Lennon
    Former Celtic manager

"Playing against Lionel Messi you have to try not to be too emotional, stay on your feet as best you can. He has got unbelievable pace, he sometimes seems to be on the periphery of games but when the ball comes into his feet, what an unbelievable player."

    Juninho
    Former Brazil and Middlesbrough midfielder

"For Brazilians, when you play against Argentina you must win, if you don't win, then don't come back to Brazil, better to wait a few days!

"32,000 Argentine fans have come to Brazil, flying, by car, or by bicycle. We welcome them, but on the field I think the Brazilians will support Bosnia."
