I have, however, managed to track down one person who does believe that Group G is not a foregone conclusion.

That man is ex-USA captain Claudio Reyna, who believes the Stars and Stripes can shock Germany, Portugal and Ghana to reach the last 16 for a second successive tournament.

"I've got a feeling we can do well and get out of it," says the ex-Rangers and Manchester City midfielder, who was voted in the 2002 World Cup's team of the tournament. "It will take some big performances. But qualifying for the knockout stage would be a huge success."

Matches between these European powerhouses are usually reserved for the business end of a tournament, but today they are slugging it out in the group stage. The world and his wife expects these two to reach the last-16 - except, that is, Ghana and USA, who meet later in Group G's other game (23:00 BST).

Germany's players received a pre-match boost after hearing some encouraging news away from the World Cup. German Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has left hospital after the skiing accident that nearly killed him, and is no longer in a coma, his family have announced.

A number of the German side paid tribute to the 45-year-old seven-time world champion after the December accident, including Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski who had a personal 'get well soon' message weaved into his boots.

"It was a great performance, they definitely deserve the win. Portugal had a player sent off and I thought it was harsh but the Germans looked very good going forward and very comfortable when Portugal had the ball.

"We thought Ozil would be the false nine but Muller did it and he was exceptional. His movement was fantastic and the midfielders joined up.

"It's picking yourself up after this defeat for Portugal. They didn't get the breaks but they're not the only side that's lost the first game. They've got to dust themselves down and if they win two games they could still win the group."

All over in Salvador as Germany ease to the easiest of easy wins. Coach Joachim Low remains poker-faced as his players backslap and hug each other on the pitch. Even the usually-serious German Chancellor Angela Merkel raises a half-smile in the stands. No matter what the exterior shows, the heart will be buzzing after an opening win like that.

Another free-kick in a dangerous position for Portugal, another chance for Cristiano Ronaldo. The skipper finally finds his range, the ball exploding out of his right foot and swerving towards the German goal, as Manuel Neuer remains alert to punch clear.

"Germany have played so patient. Sometimes in our country we rush it because of the crowd and the excitement but the Germans have played to their tempo. They look really solid at the back as well.

"Portugal's situation is similar to Spain. It all went wrong for them and it's all gone wrong for Portugal but if they win their two games they get through. They've got two winnable games and they've just got to make sure they win them."

Cristiano Ronaldo, with his usually-pristine gelled quiff hanging down over his sweaty forehead, looks totally and utterly shellshocked as he stands over a 30-yard free-kick. Thomas Muller can celebrate a fine day's work by getting first dibs on the showers. German boss Joachim Low gives Muller a breather - and he gets a rapturous round of applause from the German fans in Salvador. It has been a perfect 50th international cap for the Bayern Munich forward, who is replaced by Arsenal man Lukas Podolski.
