As Gully and James Garvican rightly point out, Salvador was also the venue for Spain's second-half collapse against the Netherlands. Portugal need to produce a performance of Dutch proportions after the break if they are to save something from this match.

"People are going to debate the sending off - but there's no debate who's the better team. Germany are a top, top side."
Philip Fernandes:, external Germany producing by far the best performance from a team so far in the tournament.
Gully:, external The Iberian countries are really not enjoying Salvador - 8 goals conceded 1 scored in 135 minutes of football.
James Garvican:, external Wondering if there is something funny in the water on the Iberian peninsula.

Thomas Muller loves a World Cup. Absolutely loves it - as the statistics show. He has been the central character in Germany's ruthless first-half performance, scoring twice, winning the corner that led to the second goal, and winding up Pepe to get the Portugal madman sent off.

"Smiles and high-fives all round on the German bench as the half-time whistle blows, quite a contrast to the shellshocked Portuguese who hear in with heads bowed, seemingly beaten. Paulo Bento and his lieutenants still appear to be discussing tactics, a surely futile action. His team are in tatters and the dejection of their supporters in the stands says it all."
Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't winking as he sloped off down the tunnel with the rest of his embarrassed team-mates, but he did find time to swap shirts with his Real Madrid team-mate Sami Khedira. Nice try Ronny - but that doesn't mean you can play for the Germans in the second half.
Soz Sh:, external Ronaldo won't be winking this time.
Patrick Zagar:, external Would not be surprised if Ronaldo does a Suarez and cries at the end, only so much one man can do.
Jack Blackburn:, external Germany vying with Holland for most impressive opening performance.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter:, external As a one time connoisseur of the dark arts of madness, in my expert opinion, that from Pepe, was supreme, world class madness.
Well, well, well. I'd hate to be entering that Portuguese changing room right now. Paulo Bento must be preparing to throw 11 cups of tea against the wall as he dissects that aberration.
In contrast, Germany gaffer Joachim Low will be sat back with his feet up on the physio table, sipping quietly on some sparkling water. I'd imagine.

"It's just a ball put in the box. Muller came across the front of Alves - he's had a little bit of luck but finished with aplomb."
This is a thrashing in Salvador. Germany forward Thomas Muller nips in front of Bruno Alves with ease before slamming past the stricken Rui Patricio.
The German fans are giving it the 'Oles' already as their team look to inflict further damage on the shell-shocked Portuguese. However, their latest move breaks down as Thomas Muller's intended throughball for Toni Kroos is overhit and runs out for a goal kick. Two added minutes.

"The Portugal bench was some picture as referee Milorad Mazic of Serbia gave Pepe his marching orders - coach Paulo Bento head in hands, coaching staff and substitutes looking at one another and gesticulating in disbelief. Portugal are in tatters, their fans silent, Ronaldo anonymous. Unsurprisingly, the Germany supporters are having quite a party."
Rio Ferdinand
Former Manchester United defender
"Pepe......stupid. Let his teammates down here. Pepe after Ronaldo is their most important player. Missing."
Another brutal aerial clash sees tempers flare. This time it is between Real Madrid team-mates Fabio Coentrao and Sami Khedira, but I think there was little, or no, intent. No cards shown. On we go.
anina m:, external No no no! When will he learn?! Such a liability!! Just when #POR was starting to look better!
Tokunbo:, external Disastrous decision. Ref ruined the match.
Nick Clohessy:, external Pepe is one of the stupidest players in world football from a disciplinary sense. He has zero self control.

"I think it was a soft sending-off. You want the referee to keep it a 11 v 11 - people have spent absolute fortunes to be here. I don't think that was a sending-off situation there. Pepe got involved but he's not brought his head back. People will disagree with me, but that's not a red card for me."

You can always rely on Portugal defender Pepe to spontaneously combust. The Real Madrid centre-half sticks his arm into Thomas Muller's mantelpiece and, although the German forward makes a meal of it, Pepe's follow-up jab with his forehead gives the referee no choice. Off you go. Portugal are two goals down and one man down.
Portugal patiently probe for a way back into the match - and almost get it! Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao seems almost surprised to be given an opportunity as the German back four doze off. But his low shot across the face of goal is toe-poked out for a corner by the German defence.
