"It was a great corner in from Toni Kroos. People have been talking about amount of goals from set-plays - the Portuguese defenders were stood there waiting for the ball. Germany deserve to be 2-0 up."

Seconds after Thomas Muller almost bags his second of the game - Germany defender Mats Hummels does put clear daylight between the teams. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back shoves Portugal marker Pepe out of the way to meet Toni Kroos's outswinging corner with a thumping header. Game over for Ronaldo and co?

"I would consider playing Cristiano Ronaldo up front and let him play against centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Mats Hummels."

"Unsympathetic jeers from the Germany supporters as Almeida bites the dust, his only contribution a weak early shot when released by Ronaldo. The jeers have, though, been replaced by cheers because we have our first Mexican wave of the day."

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

You spend six months preparing for your World Cup opener - and then the tactical planning gets ruined within half an hour. An early injury blow for Portugal as Hugo Almeida, clutching his hamstring and wearing a grimace, trudges off. Sporting Braga brute Eder - a powerful presence at 6ft 2in - replaces him.

It's as if Portugal were listening to Tony Pulis (see below). Raul Meireles, who is sporting quite possibly the thickest beard I've ever seen on a footballer, sprays the ball out to Nani, who attacks back-pedalling Germany left-back Benedikt Howedes. The Portugal winger lets rip with his right foot and the ball whizzes inches over the German crossbar. Close but it isn't close enough as Catchphrase hero Roy Walker would say.

"In the last five minutes, the Germans have dominated the play. Every time they go forward they look dangerous. They have to get the ball out to Ronaldo and Nani more, so they get the chance to have a go at the full-backs"

A guilty-looking Joao Pereira breaks forward as he looks to make amends for giving away the penalty that led to Germany's opener. However, the Portugal defender cannot fool Philipp Lahm with his fancy footwork as he is dispossessed by the Germany skipper. All pretty comfortable for Joachim Low's side at the moment.

Portuguese frustration boils over as Nani barks at the heels of Germany skipper Philipp Lahm like an angry Yorkshire Terrier. As the scoreline suggests, Germany are firmly in command at the moment. Mario Gotze tries to jig his way into the Portugal box, but his moves break down on the dancefloor as Pepe boots clear.

"Judging by the early crowd noise and pattern of play, it was looking like Germany were the away team - but that goal was met with deafening celebrations from the fans in white and a newfound confidence by their team on the pitch. Both coaches - Joachim Low and Paulo Bento - have been ordering their men around from the technical areas throughout, but Low has just sat down for the first time, with his charges now looking settled after a nervous start."

Thomas Muller's penalty is Germany's first World Cup penalty goal in regulation since 1994, when Lothar Matthaus netted against Bulgaria. They have scored 19 of their last 20 penalties at World Cups though (including shoot-outs).

Back in Salvador, Portugal coach Paulo Bento chomps down on his fingernails as he tries to mastermind a fightback. No sign of one yet.

  13. England news conferencepublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Swift change of subject - England are having a news conference right now ahead of Thursday's second Group D match against Uruguay.

Danny Welbeck defends Wayne Rooney: "Wherever he is on the pitch, he can make a massive impact."

Daniel Sturridge is not focusing on Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez, who could face England with Uruguay on Thursday.

"It's not just about Luis Suarez," insisted Sturridge. "It's a team game and not about individuals."

Cool as a cucumber from Thomas Muller. The Germany forward, socks rolled down, strolls up to the ball and rolls it into Rui Patricio's bottom right corner. That's how you take a World Cup penalty.

  17. PENALTY TO GERMANYpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Mario Gotze wriggles clear of the Portugal and is just about to score - before getting hauled down by Joao Pereira. Definite penalty. A red card? Maybe. But Valencia defender Pereira escapes with just a yellow.

Ooof! Two huge mistakes - one from either team - are almost punished. First, there's a big let off for Germany skipper Philipp Lahm, who gives away possession, but sees Cristiano Ronaldo's low shot blocked at the near post by Manuel Neuer.

Then, Portugal keeper Rui Patricio makes an even greater howler. The Sporting Lisbon man loses the plot to boot a clearance straight at Sami Khedira, and is relieved to see the Germany midfielder's 35-yard shot drift agonisingly wide of the open goal.
