"Muller's been outstanding. I was thinking whether they should bring him off and give him a breather for the next game to bring Klose on.

"He's led the line so well. The players around him have interchanged the wide players have come insde and their movement has been first-class."

While howls of derision rained down from the Portugal fans in the stands over that penalty decision, Germany plough on with their cliched efficiency. And, seconds after Philipp Lahm sees a shot blocked, the Germans recycle the ball through Andre Schurrle who puts the ball on a plate for Thomas Muller. The Bayern Munich taps in to claim his hat-trick - and the matchball.

"That looked as though it was a penalty to me. I don't know how he doesn't give that. It will be interesting to see how Portugal respond to this. They'll feel aggrieved but Germany have still been by far the better team.

"Germany were so dominant in the first half now happy just to keep the ball, it's warm and humid out there and they'll be looking to save energy for the next game."

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

The Portuguese are demanding a penalty as Germany left-back Benedikt Howedes clumsily swipes at striker Eder. We've seen them given, but referee Milorad Mazic is having none of it. Debatable.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Just as the Germans thought everything was going smoothly. Goalscoring defender Mats Hummels falls awkwardly after an aerial challenge with Portugal striker Eder, his knee collapses beneath him as he crashes to the turf. Team-mate Mario Gotze gives a roll of the hands to the bench and that means Hummels' game is over. He is replaced by Shkodran Mustafi.

Oh, it should have been a fourth for Germany. Mario Gotze finds himself in acres of space on the edge of the Portugal area, following a rapid counter by substitute Schurrle. But the Bayern Munich man almost has too much time to think, dallies and sees his shot - when it eventually arrives - blocked.

Another foray forward for the Portuguese as Nani sees plenty of grass in front of him down the left. His low cross goes to a white shirt though, before Joao Pereira fires back in to the danger zone. Per Mertersacker nonchalantly flicks clear for a corner which is then wasted.

"I'd have gone for Ozil if I was bringing someone off for Schurrle. He looked as though he's had enough of this game to me. He's not looked disinterested but at times he could have moved it quicker.

"I've been really impressed with Schurrle. When we played them at Selhurst Park he was a threat all game.

"The set-pieces have been interesting. Whether you're marking zonal or man to man you have to do it properly because the delivery is just so good."

Oh dear - when it rains it pours. Portugal's afternoon goes from bad to worse as Fabio Coentrao collapses to the floor with a painful-looking injury. The Real Madrid left-back is lumped on to a stretcher by a concerned-looking medical team before being carried down the tunnel. On comes Benfica man Andre Almeida.

Time for a German change. But it is one borne out of luxury, not necessity, as they cruise towards the finish line. Mesut Ozil slopes off with a miserable frown, team-mate Sami Khedira bowling over to give him some words of encouragement. The Arsenal midfielder is replaced by another Premier League player in Cheslea's Andre Schurrle.

Glen from London on text: Talks about Wayne Rooney being dropped for his World Cup scoring record, surely Ronaldo's place should be in danger. Hasn't had one proper touch yet.

Fred Kingsley on text: Muller completely deserves to go down in that situation - every other player in the world goes down when they get touched in the face. If he weren't German people wouldn't be making such a fuss. It's been a fantastic Germany performance, concentrate on that instead.

Rare sighting of goal for Portugal as they win a 20-yard free-kick. Nani stands over the ball... no, I'm joking. There's only one man readying himself - you know who it is. Cristiano Ronaldo takes a sharp intake of breath, strides up... and smashes the ball against the German wall. Rare wastefulness from the Ballon d'Or winner.

    Tony Pulis
Crystal Palace manager on BBC Radio 5 live

"Portugal still need to have a threat going forward otherwise you're just defending continuously. But other than that when they lose the ball they've just got to drop into their shape and make it very hard for the Germans to get in behind them. They're playing 4-3-2 now.

"Even when it was 11 v 11 Germany still outnumbered them down the sides of the pitch.

"Muller's been exception in the way he's dropped off and found pockets, Ozil is playing on the right and Kroos and Gotze have really got forward to support. Sometimes they've got seven players forward. They've just looked so fluid."

Question for you - how long do Portugal keep on Cristiano Ronaldo? This game has all but gone, so boss Paulo Bento must be thinking of hauling off his captain to protect that left knee. The final two games against Ghana and USA look to be 'must-win' matches now.

Rope-a-dope from Germany as they swiftly break up the other end - and nearly bag a third. Mario Gotze glides through the parting Portugal defence, teeing up Mesut Ozil whose weak shot is blocked by the legs of keeper Rui Patricio. The rebound falls to man-of the-moment Thomas Muller, but his flying header shoots over the crossbar.

Alan Bell:, external Muller should have been booked for diving. Cheating like that is embarrassing for the sport and it ruined the match.

Howard Horner:, external At this rate, Muller might beat Ronaldo's 14 goals in the world cup by the end of the second half...
