"There are no energy levels. Raheem Sterling has only gone past one player that half, for me a lot of the players look very heavy-legged. England need to show more quality or we are going to pay the price."

Who can change it for England then? Lallana? Lambert? Milner? Lampard?

"For the Uruguay goal Luis Suarez just runs off the back of Phil Jagielka. I don't want to dig him out but Jagielka doesn't look around. You've got to have your head on a swivel, looking over your shoulder. If the centre-forward can see the number on your back you are in a trouble.

"I'd like to see Adam Lallana come on, he could be the link between midfield and attack. Wayne Rooney seems to be trying too much. He has got to stay disciplined and use his energy in the right areas."

Siobhan Gallagher:, external We have no world class players, it's time to stop deluding ourselves. We haven't had one since Scholes.

Mike Trotter:, external Will we ever learn to stop crosses into the box?!!!!! Poor!! Barkley has to come on!!!

Luke:, external The only hope we have is breaking that abysmal partnership of Henderson and Gerrard. Roy's favourites costing us dearly.

  6. Are England heading out?published at 20:49 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England fans do not despair. Even in defeat to Uruguay tonight, qualification is possible.

There are presently 81 different permutations for Group D.

Should England lose to Uruguay in Sao Paulo, they will need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday.

Then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

Should England draw tonight, they would finish level with Uruguay at worst with victory against a Costa Rican side beaten by Italy.

If England win, a draw against Costa Rica could be enough, depending on goal difference.

"Uruguay ahead at half-time and England are just not having the same attacking success as they had against Italy. Manager Roy Hodgson must find a way to get Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling into the game more."

"This is the ideal game plan from Uruguay. Get your noses in front, sit deep, suck England in and catch them on the break.

"Just looking at the goal again how has Luis Suarez got the ball across Joe Hart? What a header that is - Suarez was on his heels.

"England have not turned up so far, yes Wayne Rooney hit the bar but apart from that it has been all Uruguay who have played the better football and deserve their half-time lead."

Luis Suarez has scored four times in seven World Cup appearances and he has scored with Uruguay's first effort on target in the game.

    Big player. Big moment.

England behind at the break then. They were arguably on top again for large parts of the game but they were undone by one move of real quality.

Terry Vaughan:, external For a big lad, Welbeck seems to spend a lot of time falling to the ground.

Karl Tarachand:, external What is Rooney doing?? Id go for Jack Wilshere instead of him!!!!

Ralph Brooker:, external All that possession. All those set pieces. It's coming to nothing. We need to change it up front.

England undone in the most inevitable fashion. Everyone looking for vital signs of Luis Suarez's shortage of match fitness but still fit enough to pull away from Phil Jagielka on to the end of Edinson Cavani's cross.

"Thinking Suarez is unfit is rather like standing over someone playing dead - who suddenly leaps up and punches you on the nose. Huge roars of appreciation coming from Uruguay's fans now."

England still pushing as we close in on half-time. This could be a frustrating second half coming up.

The cross from Edinson Cavani was perfect. He was only about 10 yards away from Luis Suarez and got it up and down over Phil Jagielka. It was wonderful technique.

"We've seen a good response from England with Daniel Sturridge's shot and a series of corners. England have upped the tempo and Uruguay have dropped off looking to protect their lead before half-time."

"It's a very well worked goal - every pass was quality. Uruguay broke on England after pinching the ball, Edinson Cavan ran on Glen Johnson and we were waiting for the shot but Cavani plays the most beautiful little chip for Luis Suarez, who heads brilliantly across Joe Hart into the bottom corner. It has been coming"
