"Question now is whether Hodgson's done enough in last two yrs to suggest progress; lack of alternatives & expectation could possibly save him."

    Calls for Michael Carrick?

    I'm not sure that's the long-term answer...

"Maybe it is time for a new England midfield, and I wouldn't be surprised if Steven Gerrard calls it a day but I can't blame him for that goal.

"Yes maybe he could have won the header, but anyone who plays at that level will known that your two centre-backs should always be expecting you to miss the ball.

"There will be some calling for Michael Carrick, who is possibly a bit more athletic even though he is 32, but he has had a poor season, and we do have some good young midfielders coming through in Jack Wilshere and Ross Barkley."

Luis Suarez won the game for Uruguay almost single-handedly this evening - and he has had his say.

    "I dreamt this," Suarez said.

"I'm enjoying this moment, because of all I suffered, the criticism I received. So, there you go."

"I'm not sure we have got enough leaders in this England squad. I'm sure if we had gone to John Terry and asked him to play, the players wouldn't have minded because he has been the best defender in the Premier League this season.

"When things are going well and its 1-1 you need some calm heads, nobody seems to be commanding players and saying you sit there and you sit there.

"At Liverpool I played alongside Dietmar Hamann, who was very experienced internationally, and he would go mad at us at certain times in the game and get us back to being solid.

"Getting players in a huddle before the game and saying something isn't being a leader if you ask me."

"The majority of the England squad was what most people would pick, but only one or two who would have got in other international sides. If you look across the Premier League, we do not have as good players as other countries. The best players in the best teams always make the difference and we haven't got enough of them.

"Uruguay were fighting for their lives, you could tell they were wounded after defeat to Costa Rica and they showed passion. The reaction when we went a goal down showed we were capable of playing at a higher tempo, so why didn't 't we start that way? We could have gone at Italy or Uruguay from the off and we didn't do that."

"Wayne Rooney started the move for his goal and was in the right place to finish. It was good to see him in there because he had a few good chances before and lesser guys might have shied away."

"The second goal is just a straight ball. Phil Jagielka is in no man's land and leaves Gary Cahill in a bad predicament. Personally I would drop off and make sure there are no players between me and the goalkeeper or you go and attack the ball and we have done neither.

"Suarez has had two chances and he has banged them both into the back of the net."

More from England manager Roy Hodgson: "I'm numb really, numb with disappointment and sadness that so many hopes and dreams and so much work has been blown away by today's result.

"The hope is small, had we drawn today's game I would even have been tempted to say to you the chances were good.

"In both games we had long periods of dominance and one would have thought we could have carried that through to the third game. Now we need Italy to win both their games and that is not guaranteed.

"Uruguay are very different to Italy, Uruguay allow you more chance to play, the game is broken up less. There were a few challenges that went unpunished, the referee allowed the game to flow but sometimes to our detriment.

"Although I don't think anyone could question the players' desire, we haven't been good enough to win the two games.

"We thought after the equaliser if anyone would get a winner it would be us but unfortunately one kick down the field and a flick on came through to Luis Suarez and he doesn't miss those chances."

    Former England captain Alan Shearer

"Luis Suarez is remarkable but he's a top-class player. You give players of his calibre chances at this level, they'll take them. Teams are successful because their top stars perform. Glen Johnson had to stop the cross for the first goal.

"Positionally it was all wrong and there was a lack of communication. If that goal was to happen on a Sunday morning the manager would be disappointed but it wasn't a bad finish again."

  16. Postpublished at 22:44 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former Netherlands midfielder Clarence Seedorf
    MOTD analyst

"It's disappointing of course for England. They properly came back in the game. A draw would have been a good result but Uruguay are tough to play against. We're hoping for the next results.

"Suarez is a killer in front of goal."

  17. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former England captain Rio Ferdinand
    MOTD analyst

"The lads will be gutted with that. The second goal is nightmarish, a straight ball down the middle and it is schoolboyish, you have to make sure these things don't happen. We got ourselves back in the game and I would have taken a point.

"It wasn't to be at the end and we let ourselves down."

  18. Postpublished at 22:42 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former England captain Alan Shearer
    MOTD analyst

"As long as we continue to defend as we did tonight and against Italy then we'll struggle to progress. I didn't see many positives in that performance.

"Rooney's first World Cup goal perhaps but there weren't big performances from our big players. Raheem Sterling didn't really turn up, Sturridge struggled at times but the huge concern was the way we defended for the goals conceded."

"Bad defending, not doing the right things, the simple things, a lack of concentration at the back, have cost England dear in both games.

"England cannot play at a high tempo with quality. It's alright saying there's passion but it is frantic. There is no slick play, just panic, blood and thunder."

  20. Postpublished at 22:39 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former England midfielder Danny Murphy
    MOTD analyst

"I know Roy Hodgson well and his philosophy is usually a lot more conservative but with the players we went with, and possibly he was persuaded a little bit by the media bandwagon, he came full circle.

"That qualifier in Ukraine was dull as dishwater, but it was a very Roy performance. In the build-up to this tournament I was thinking wow we're going to attack, but it is nearly impossible to play like that and defend well."
