Only four teams (8.7%) have progressed to the last 16 after losing their opening game since the current World Cup format was introduced in 1998.

England have scored in each of their last eight World Cup encounters with South American sides.

They have conceded six goals in their last two World Cup games dating back to 2010. They have never conceded two or more goals in three straight games.

Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay: "There should be nerves and excitement but not in this England team, they played really well against Italy, and are bringing youngsters through the nation is excited about.

"Uruguay did not cover themselves in glory against Costa Rica so England can be confident and upbeat."

  4. What's what in Group D?published at 17:13 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England fans do not despair. Even in defeat to Uruguay tonight, qualification is possible.

There are presently 81 different permutations for Group D.

Should England lose to Uruguay in Sao Paulo, they will need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday.

Then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

Should England draw tonight, they would finish level with Uruguay at worst with victory against a Costa Rican side beaten by Italy.

If England win, a draw against Costa Rica could be enough, depending on goal difference.

    Got all that...?

Italy may have got the better of England at the weekend but Uruguay were taken apart by Costa Rica.

They looked to struggle against pace - something that this England side does possess in abundance.

England won plenty of friends last Saturday night for a promising attacking display against Italy - but no points.

A 2-1 defeat to Italy in Manaus was not how Roy Hodgson wanted to start the World Cup but there remains a reasonably positive outlook in the England camp.

A second defeat against Uruguay would not technically knock England out this evening, but it would leave them in real, real trouble.

There are question marks around the main forward of both sides, they are both looking for their first point of the tournament and it is all up for grabs now.

    Are you ready?

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has been declared fit to play following knee surgery and is expected to start.

Captain Diego Lugano is out with a knee injury, with Jorge Fucile expected to replace banned right-back Maxi Pereira.

England manager Roy Hodgson must decide whether to keep faith with Wayne Rooney following a ninth World Cup game without scoring against Italy.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in training following a knee ligament injury but remains a doubt.
