"I think the weather in Rio reflects the mood of the England side. Gloomy.

"The World Cup would be a better place with us in it but we haven't earned the right.

"We have been a bit naive in situations. I think the game yesterday when we got back into it at 1-1 we had the chance to get a point and dust ourselves down but we didn't give ourselves that opportunity. We didn't see it through.

"I think the England players can take the experience. I look at myself after going to the 1998 World Cup and didn't play any minutes. Some of these guys will get minutes and they can take that into the next tournament. That's what you've got to look for from those young guys."

"For all the supporters and players, manager, coaching staff, it wasn't for the lack of trying. England just weren't good enough and that is upsetting for everybody."

"I think the most amazing thing about Costa Rica is their energy levels were as high at the end of the game as they were at the start.

"I thought after watching Italy against England if you got Andrea Pirlo out of the equation, the creativity was none."

"The scenes on the field down in front of me are incredible to witness. Costa Rica players are dancing in the centre of the field, there are flags on there, banners, players are hugging each other, they are going over to their fans in the corner.

"They are celebrating like they have won the World Cup and England could not be further from their minds. It is a scene of total joy. In contrast to the way the nation is feeling back in England. No one saw this coming."

"They deserved it, nothing less. Italy did not bring anything to the table, they could not lay a glove on Costa Rica, they thoroughly deserve this."

    England are going home.

"An unbelievable performance from Costa Rica. In every single department they have been better than Italy. Second balls, first into the tackle, a great goal and should have had a penalty.

"But how can Italy be so good against England, with everyone lauding Pirlo, yet be so poor today?"

"I'm so disappointed with Italy, I'd expected them to make real changes but there's no urgency, no-one wants to get on the ball and they are playing straight up and down football."

Costa Rica five minutes away from a place in the last 16, which would equal their best effort at a World Cup. In 1990 they were beaten in the knockout stages by Czechoslovakia, after extra time.

"For how great Pirlo is, he's become predictable today. Ball into him, turns it around the corner - they're predicting it.

"Aside from Balotelli's chance in the first half, they have created absolutely nothing."

Into the final 10 minutes of a tepid second half. Italy have looked short of imagination since going behind and are limping through to the final game showdown with Uruguay.

You would have to make Costa Rica heavy favourites to beat England too on this form. If you laughed when they beat Scotland in 1990, prepare for some payback.
