"Hang on a minute lads. I've got a great idea..."

Like Charlie Croker and his gang of hapless cockney mobsters in the 1969 film 'The Italian Job', England are teetering on a cliff edge.

Defeat by Uruguay last night means that England could be out of the tournament by the time you've had your dinner. They are relying on an Italy win against Costa Rica in Recife this afternoon to keep their slim chances alive for a few more days.

Italy may not have Michael Caine. But they do have Mario Balotelli.

    Can England stay alive...?

  2. What England needpublished at 00:31 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

England need Italy to win their remaining Group D games against Costa Rica and Uruguay to stay in the tournament.

Roy Hodgson's side can then progress if they beat Costa Rica in their final game next Tuesday.

  3. Team Newspublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Italy goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is fit to return as Italy make three changes from the side which beat England.
