    Cameroon v Brazil

Mark Lawrenson: "Brazil should win and top the group but they have been OK at best so far. I was at their last group game and they struggled to break down Mexico - I just think they move the ball too slowly. You can also get at them when they don't have the ball."

    Lawro's prediction: Cameroon 0-2 Brazil

    Croatia v Mexico

Not sure who to back? Luckily Mark Lawrenson - our resident Mystic Meg - has nailed his colours to the mast for your amusement.

"I am going to go for Mexico to get the point they need because I was impressed by them against Brazil," says the ex-Republic of Ireland defender.

"They play with three centre-backs but Rafael Marquez comes out from the back and the wing-backs bomb on. Oribe Peralta looked a decent player as well up front."

    Lawro's prediction: Croatia 1-1 Mexico

"You have to assume Brazil will win so I would be surprised if Croatia don't attack the game for a win straight off. They have to think 'Cameroon will lose so we have to win'."

One man who has been off-target for Brazil is much-maligned striker Fred. And the Fluminense man, renowned for his heavy partying in his homeland, has played like a man who has had a big session the night before, reckons Alan Shearer.

"I just don't understand why Brazil are still picking him," said the ex-England destroyer. "He doesn't move, he doesn't shoot and he's dragging the team down.

"I don't know if Brazil should change the system or play Neymar as a false nine, but the fact is that Fred is not the answer for what they are doing now."

    Brazil v Cameroon

"Confirmation Hulk returns for Brazil at the expense of Ramires and Samuel Eto'o is only fit enough to make the bench for Cameroon."

Brazil now know that finishing top of Group A will set up a last-16 tie against Group B runners-up Chile, who were pipped to top spot by the Netherlands earlier. If they finish second then that will set up a match against the Dutch. Would love to see Scolari and Van Gaal going at it on the touchline - it would be like Hulk Hogan and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage in their WWE heyday.

One Brazilian you wouldn't want to make angry (apart from Hulk of course) is coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. But Big Phil has been made angry, by Dutch coach Louis van Gaal of all people.

Scolari was left fuming over Van Gaal's apparent suggestion the World Cup hosts would pick and choose their second-round opponents.

"Some people expressed a view that we were going to choose who we were going to play. Those sorts of comments are either stupid or ill-intentioned, I repeat stupid or ill-intentioned," said a finger-wagging Scolari.

"Cameroon have been a disgrace. Before the tournament talking about bonuses and on the field what Assou-Ekotto and Moukandjo did was a disgrace. Their performances have been terrible, it has been shocking."

Cameroon failed to progress beyond the group stage for the fifth successive World Cup as they were thrashed by Croatia.

The African side fell behind in the 11th minute as Ivica Olic fired home, and were reduced to 10 men after Alex Song lashed out at Mario Mandzukic.

Ivan Perisic made it 2-0 when he punished goalkeeper Charles Itandje's poor clearance, before Mandzukic struck twice.

And it got even worse for Cameroon when defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto decided it would be a good idea to headbutt his own team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo.

Brazil produced an unconvincing display as second opponents Mexico held them to a goalless draw with an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's side were again well short of their best in Fortaleza, with Neymar and captain Thiago Silva denied by Ochoa in Brazil's best chances.

Mexico more than held their own, testing home keeper Julio Cesar through substitute Raul Jiminez and peppering his goal in a breathless second half.

Mexico moved level with Brazil on three points after overcoming Cameroon, despite having two goals controversially ruled out in their opening fixture.

Ex-Tottenham forward Giovani Dos Santos had a volley and a header disallowed, with replays suggesting both calls were incorrect. Cameroon rarely threatened but a Samuel Eto'o shot hit the post and Benoit Assou-Ekotto's free-kick went wide.

However, Mexico secured victory when Dos Santos's shot was parried before Oribe Peralta arrived to slot in the rebound.

Brazil's poster boy Neymar stole the show as Brazil came from behind to open the World Cup with a victory in Sao Paulo - but the match turned on a controversial penalty.

The Barcelona forward scored either side of half-time after Marcelo had scored an early own goal, but the Croatians were left livid by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura's decision to point to the spot for the penalty which put Brazil ahead.

Oscar cemented the result with a wonderful individual goal late on to leave the vast majority of the Arena de Sao Paulo happy.

"If the din that greeted Brazil's goalkeepers as they emerged from the tunnel to warm up is anything to go by, we're in for a very special night. Boos ring out as the Cameroon squad come out, and now the yellow-clad masses are chanting "Brazil! Brazil! Brazil!". As it happens, those were the words that adorned the front page of Brazilian newspaper the Lancet today.

"The subheading read 'A selecao ainda nao tem uma musica que a embale nesta Copa. Entao, torcedor, encha o peito e grite alto pela nosse classificacao hoje!', which translates to mean 'The national team does not have a song that moves people in this World Cup. So, fans, fill your chest and scream loud for our qualification today!'. It appears they've heeded that message."

  17. England news conferencepublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

As expected, England manager Roy Hodgson says he will field a much-changed side to face Costa Rica on Tuesday.

"A lot of players will be different tomorrow," he says. "I am handing them an opportunity to go out on a fantastic stage to show they are not just players with potential but that they are good enough for the England team. As manager I cannot do more than that and am sure they will not let me down.

"Ben Foster will play in goal, at right-back will be Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill will be the centre-backs, left-back will be Luke Shaw. In midfield we will have James Milner, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley and Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge will play up front."

Croatia make one change from the win over Cameroon, with Sime Vrsaljko coming in for midfielder Sammir. Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic again leads the line.

Mexico remain unchanged from the goalless draw against hosts Brazil as Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is again on the bench.
