You're in! Luke Shaw releases Adam Lallana with a classic throughball, he has Daniel Sturridge inside him waiting for a tap-in but Keylor Navas reads it well and makes the save. Good goalkeeping, average attacking.

Costa Rica now bring on forward Christian Bolanos. They are topping the group anyway but want a win to seal it.

"England are giving us no opportunity to be positive and that is the most disappointing thing. They are giving the ball away under no pressure. Under pressure England can't normally keep the ball but tonight they can't keep it when under no pressure."

From Phil Neville to W.H. Auden. There's something for everyone here.

Adam Lallana goes into the book for a bad foul, studs-up stuff. That's three bookings in quick time for England, who are as frustrated watching this as the rest of us.

    Former England defender Phil Neville
    MOTD analyst

"This game is set up perfectly for someone like Raheem Sterling as he has got the speed to run in behind.

"The best England moves have been between Ross Barkley, Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge but the final pass is just letting them down at the moment."

Jack Tarrant: , externalJack Wilshere - Where did all that talent go? Shell of a player - spends so much time on ground and is so ineffective.

Luke:, external Sturridge this WC has been just as frustrating as what led to his Chelsea and City exits

Roy Julian:, external How many years did Hodgson say it would take for England to improve? Six wasn't it. What planet is he on?

Decisions, decisions - England can't make the right decision. Again they work the ball into a good area but Jack Wilshere takes too long and runs into a defender.

    Has anybody spotted a positive?

"Sturridge has had three or four good half chances. He has not shown that sharpness that we saw at club level. Ball came to him and he miscontrolled it.

"The press back home has been vicious, it is going to be worse tomorrow. If they had had a go today, the press would have been light on a young team but I am struggling to see anything positive about this performance. This at the moment really is rock bottom."

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

England on top but posing little threat.

Adam Lallana then hooks a clever pass into the box but it's between Daniel Sturridge and Frank Lampard. Ross Barkley is booked for a cynical pull on Christian Gamboa.

Half an opening for Daniel Sturridge after Luke Shaw's right-footed shot was blocked on the edge of the box but his first touch is not good enough and goalkeeper Keylor Navas is out quick to make a fine save.

Once or twice Sturridge has had a sighter in this game but he's not been sharp enough. Luis Suarez scored both of his chances, that's the difference.

"England could play higher, get tighter, squeeze play a bit. I still think we are so naive. We don't mark players, we mark space. We are miles off certain things, there is no energy and we are making them look better than they are."

Miracle Roch:, external The Uruguay v Italy match really shows you how poor England are. How could you have lost to these two teams?

Abhinav Reddy:, external And here I am, thinking England vs Algeria 2010 was the most frustrating game ever. Future looks so bleak for the three lions.

James Ollerenshaw:, external What England really needs is another David Beckham. And we don't have one. Once again England are pathetic.

"Group of supporters from England, Costa Rica and Brazil currently playing with a beach football in the stands to great cheers and hilarity. Might just tell you a bit about the game they're meant to be watching.

"As low-key as you might expect. A couple of moments from Ross Barkley and a couple of chances for Daniel Sturridge - bit of an end of term feel for England here."
