"Everton's Ross Barkley shows the two sides to his game that have come under scrutiny from manager Roy Hodgson. He concedes possession in a dangerous area with an over-ambitious run then shows fast feet in the lead up to Daniel Sturridge's penalty claim. The positives still outweigh the negatives in a talent that has a long England career in front of him."

Taher E: , externalDon't despair England fans, just wait till we have a fit Walcott and the Ox tearing it up on the wings!

Matt Holford: , externalWilshere offers nothing to this England team. Gives the ball away all the time and creates nothing.

Ross Barkley runs over to take a corner - but he's on the wrong side. He has to trot the full 50 yards or so over to the other side. Don't think I've ever seen that happen before. Anyway, his delivery from the right side is good, Phil Jones nods it back and Daniel Sturridge heads over from seven yards.

    Decent opening.

"This a great opportunity for some of England's young players to really put a marker down. But they just haven't troubled Costa Rica and I am really surprised by that.

"There is just one option when England are on the ball. You need three of four to play well. England also have to play at a higher tempo, work harder and be more tactically aware."

Bryan Ruiz, take a bow! That is wonderful stuff, a Zidane pirouette to get away from Jack Wilshere. Will Fulham fans see that in the Championship next season?

Neil Comerford: , externalSurely if you're Italy or Uruguay you'd be complaining that England are putting out a B team and presumably making it easier for Costa Rica to win the group?

"I am saying that is good defending. It dropped to Sturridge and Duarte just got his body in and did enough. Brave defending. Daniel Sturridge has to be sharper and quicker to get his shot away."

That's a good move. Ross Barkley gets away from two men with some excellent feet, he then finds James Milner out on the left. His cross is nodded down by Barkley for Daniel Sturridge, who has the goal open up for him momentarily.

He doesn't hit it first time though, and that allows Oscar Duarte to get across and shut him out. Sturridge wants a penalty - good defending though.

Abdul Karim:, external Reason Lampard is in the team: he needs big tournament experience, will come good in 4 years time. Honest.

Mike Lawson:, external Sturridge is undoubtedly brilliant, but needs to remember that sometimes playing another person in on goal is an option.

Simon Gray:, external Dreadful England, No leadership or identity. Dull to watch and always flatter to deceive. We need an attacking minded manager

England mount a break as Frank Lampard whips the ball around the corner but between them Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge and Jack Wilshere can't control the ball as it spins across from right to left.

"Costa Rica are playing with confidence, they are happy to be patient and wait for their opportunities. That is the big difference between the two sides at the moment.

"Ben Foster just touches that free-kick onto the bar. A great save by him."

    What an effort!

Costa Rica win a free-kick 25 yards out, Celso Borges whips it over the wall and Ben Foster just about turns it onto the face of the crossbar. Top save, top strike!

"The multi-linguists here in Belo Horizonte tell us that a loud chant echoing around the stadium is England being taunted for their early elimination. Suppose that falls into "harsh but fair" territory. England's fans are also being taunted for their refusal to join in the Mexican Wave. Surely that is simply a demonstration of good taste?"

Daniel Sturridge splits the centre-halves with a really positive run and James Milner tries to find him, but he can't quote pick him out. That's better.

"My biggest concern is we have talked about philosophy and identity and I don't think England have either. You used to think England are strong defensively, difficult to beat. Now I don't know what our identity is. I don't know whose fault it is.

"This is just an okay game of football. There is no real purpose."

When in doubt, have a dig. That's Daniel Sturridge's motto and he is sticking with it, firing high and wide after a lovely spin 25 yards from goal.

James Milner can't catch up with a lost cause down the right wing which is a surprise as that is very much his niche market.

It's a bit like a friendly at the moment. Let's lift it!
