Anyway, his delivery from the right side is good, Phil Jones nods it back and Daniel Sturridge heads over from seven yards.

"This a great opportunity for some of England's young players to really put a marker down. But they just haven't troubled Costa Rica and I am really surprised by that.

"There is just one option when England are on the ball. You need three of four to play well. England also have to play at a higher tempo, work harder and be more tactically aware."

"I am saying that is good defending. It dropped to Sturridge and Duarte just got his body in and did enough. Brave defending. Daniel Sturridge has to be sharper and quicker to get his shot away."

That's a good move. Ross Barkley gets away from two men with some excellent feet, he then finds James Milner out on the left. His cross is nodded down by Barkley for Daniel Sturridge, who has the goal open up for him momentarily.

He doesn't hit it first time though, and that allows Oscar Duarte to get across and shut him out. Sturridge wants a penalty - good defending though.

Costa Rica win a free-kick 25 yards out, Celso Borges whips it over the wall and Ben Foster just about turns it onto the face of the crossbar. Top save, top strike!

Luke Shaw fizzes a pass into Southampton team-mate Adam Lallana but he can't control it. This is not great fare so far.

"The multi-linguists here in Belo Horizonte tell us that a loud chant echoing around the stadium is England being taunted for their early elimination. Suppose that falls into "harsh but fair" territory. England's fans are also being taunted for their refusal to join in the Mexican Wave. Surely that is simply a demonstration of good taste?"

Daniel Sturridge splits the centre-halves with a really positive run and James Milner tries to find him, but he can't quote pick him out. That's better.

"My biggest concern is we have talked about philosophy and identity and I don't think England have either. You used to think England are strong defensively, difficult to beat. Now I don't know what our identity is. I don't know whose fault it is.

When in doubt, have a dig. That's Daniel Sturridge's motto and he is sticking with it, firing high and wide after a lovely spin 25 yards from goal.

James Milner can't catch up with a lost cause down the right wing which is a surprise as that is very much his niche market.

It's a bit like a friendly at the moment. Let's lift it!
