We may have only had one goal all day but you can't tell me you didn't enjoy it. Drama served by the bucketload.

No more football until Tuesday night - when it's Germany v Brazil.

    Big. See you there.

"It was an incredible decision from Louis van Gaal, it was such a brave decision. I think that shows there is unity in the squad. You rarely ever see it in a penalty shootout and it's a masterstoke really, a touch of genius. It would be incredible if he went to Manchester United as a World Cup winning manager now."

Did Tim Krul mean that he had been practicing penalties for seven weeks? Surely not...

  4. PLAYER REACTIONpublished at 00:07 British Summer Time 6 July 2014

    Netherlands captain Robin van Persie:

"The sub was terrific, if you see something like that, it deserves credit. We know Tim Krul is great at stopping pens."

  5. MANAGER REACTIONpublished at 00:06 British Summer Time 6 July 2014

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto:

"We're proud. We're not a world power. We work with what we have. We're going home unbeaten at the World Cup."

Tom Miszkowski:, external Another big decision that Louis van Gaal has got right, bodes well for Manchester United next season.

Nick Coke:, external Don't buy all this Louis van Gaal hype. A great manager would have won it in 90 minutes.

Tom Chance:, external Referee should take the ball after each penalty, be on the spot to stop any keeper antics. Poor form there. Bad sportsmanship.

David:, external Tim Krul's gamesmanship leaves a lot to be desired.

Netherlands and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul:

"This is what you work for for seven weeks. Now you can see, you have to do this with all 23 men. We had looked at them, but we didn't learn anything. The power was standing still and then going in. Me and goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek worked on it."

Greg, Manchester: Could it be that while the rest of the squad was training, his third choice keeper (unlikely to get game time) was practising saving penalties non-stop? Louis van Gaal = genius!

Daniel Higgins, Ballymena: Tim Krul dived the right way every time. Louis van Gaal had penalties in mind and made sure Krul knew where every taker was going to shoot, brilliant stuff.

Keylor Navas saved 21 of the 23 shots on target that he faced at this World Cup (91%). What a man.

Louis van Gaal is ushering the game into an NFL style era of 'special teams.'

Will we see more keepers being penalty experts from now on? Bring them on for spot-kicks.

"I do feel for Costa Rica but for the good of the competition it is nice to see Netherlands in the semi-final. Top drawer from Louis van Gaal to make the change and introduce Tim Krul.

"I've enjoyed watching the Dutch, yes they have been suspect at the back but they have quality players in Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie and for me they have deserved to get into the semi-finals for the attacking way they have played."
