Frank Lampard defends Wayne Rooney after the criticism he has received recently and believes too much focus on individual performances is not good for the England team as a whole.

England striker Rooney was criticised for not having as big an impact in the 2-1 defeat to Italy as some may have hoped, but Lampard tells BBC Radio 5 live's World Cup Breakfast: "I think he is determined in every tournament he plays and every game for Manchester United. A lot of furore has been built up around him.

"I see the same Wayne - he wants to play well and give everything to the team, show his ability in training and in games. We didn't win the other night but the minute we start focusing on individual performances again and again it becomes detrimental."

  11. Slow-paced Pelepublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 18 June 2014

The roads of Fortaleza were packed on Tuesday as Brazil fans rushed to get home to watch their game against Mexico, and even three-time World Cup winner Pele was not immune to rush-hour woes.

The Brazil great missed the first half as he tried to navigate the heavy traffic but, with the game ending goalless, at least he did not miss much.

"For the first time I had to listen to the first half of a Brazil game inside a car - we were stuck in traffic," Pele tells Globo TV.

The antics of Brazil full-back Marcelo also failed to impress Match of the Day pundits Clarence Seedorf, Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry.

Marcelo fell to the ground trying to win a penalty instead of having a shot on goal when he only had the goalkeeper to beat.

Seedorf says Marcelo's decision to dive showed he was lacking self-belief and was "looking for something easy". Watch the verdict of the Match of the Day pundits on the BBC Sport website.

  13. Not like Brazilpublished at 08:30 British Summer Time 18 June 2014

Brazil may have had the best chances against Mexico on Tuesday, but not everyone was impressed with the hosts' performance during the goalless draw.

BBC Sport's Ben Smith writes: "This was nothing like watching Brazil. The Selecao have rarely looked so ordinary, so human. They trudged from the field at Estadio Castelao to a soundtrack of whistles, shoulders slumped, faces crumpled with frustration. This was not in the script."
