    Diego Maradona will support his beloved Argentina from his hotel room when they play Nigeria on Wednesday after the country's FA president suggested he had jinxed the team against Iran.

    Julio Grondona said Lionel Messi's brilliant stoppage-time winner, which gave the South Americans a passage to the last 16 on Saturday, was thanks to "jinxed" Maradona leaving the stands.

    Maradona said: "I don't want to be a problem for the government or for those who don't want me to go. I'll stay in the hotel watching on television.

    A man from Buenos Aires named Diego Suarez - who happens to have the Twitter handle @Suarez - found himself bombarded with messages after the incident.

    Bloomberg reports , externalthat Ghana's government has sent a plane carrying more than $3m (£1.7m) in cash to Brazil to pay the World Cup appearance fees owed to the national soccer team.

    "The players insisted that they will want physical cash," deputy sports minister Joseph Yammin said in comments broadcast by Accra-based Citi FM.

    "Government had to mobilize the money and a chartered flight to Brazil. The money is in excess of $3 million."

    Salvador de Bahia, which hosts the match between Bosnia-Hercegovina and Iran, was the first capital city of Brazil.

    The Unesco World Heritage Site is the centre of Afro-Brazilian culture and the city is renowned for its rich architecture, which includes the Sao Francisco Church and Convent, the Basilica Cathedral and the art deco Elevator Lacerda - which is believed to be the first public lift in the world.

    The city will host six matches at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

    Portugal coach Paulo Bento will keep his job even if his side fails to reach the last 16 of the World Cup, according to the vice president of Portugal's football federation.

    Bento was rewarded with a new two-year contract in April, which would see him remain at the helm until after Euro 2016, but Portugal's poor performance in Brazil has cast doubts over his future.

    "When we signed with Paulo Bento, it was with the perspective of taking us to the finals of the European Championship," said vice-president Humberto Coelho. "We are sad, but we are not throwing in the towel because we have one more game to play."
