Biting claims aside, Italy cannot escape the fact that their World Cup is over.

After beating England in their opening match, the four-time champions failed to score against Costa Rica and Uruguay, losing both matches 1-0 and coach Cesare Prandelli says he will resign.

Italy had Claudio Marchisio sent off against Uruguay early in the second half.

  2. Suarez reaction in Uruguaypublished at 07:32 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Today's papers in Uruguay haven't hit newsstands yet but our colleagues from BBC Monitoring have been keeping an eye on how the Suarez storm is being reported online in South America.

El Observador, external suggests the English media, more than the Italian, have already begun "a campaign" against the 27-year-old striker.

The UNoticias website, external says: "The photos of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini showing bite marks on his shoulders are circulating more than that of Luis Suarez on social media, but FIFA cameras also caught the swollen cheekbone Suarez… but nobody is talking about how the Liverpool striker was injured."

La Red21, external say Suarez is "again immersed in a media storm" after the incident.

There's only one place to start. On a night England signed off their dismal World Cup campaign with a goalless draw, Luis Suarez stole the limelight by appearing to bite Giorgio Chiellini as Uruguay progressed at Italy's expense.

Fifa have opened disciplinary proceedings against the Liverpool striker, with the Uruguayan FA having until 21:00 BST to present their case.

Suarez last night told Uruguayan television: "There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them."
