    England suffered defeat in the World Cup final in Brazil. Yes, you did read that correctly.

    In the Playstation gaming World Cup tournament, England's David Bytheway lost 3-1 in the final against August Rosenmeier of Denmark.

    The pair saw off around two million contestants to make the final two and Rosenmeier, who said he "trains" four to six hours a day, won $20,000 (£11,700).

    World Cup organisers have closed the fan festival in Belo Horizonte on Friday out of respect for those killed and injured when a fly-over collapsed.

    Two people died and 19 were injured when the overpass, which was under construction, collapsed onto another road trapping a number of vehicles including a bus.

    Officials have stressed that there will be no threat to the World Cup semi-final taking place on Tuesday.

    Kevin De Bruyne has outshone the likes of star Belgium team-mates Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku in the creativity stakes at the 2014 World Cup.

    The Wolfsburg attacker scored the opener and made Lukaku's match winner in the round of 16 win over USA.

    At 23 and after a short stay at Chelsea, De Bruyne is a name Premier League fans could quickly forget but as the third most creative player in the tournament, he is making that tough to do.

    Scholars at Dundee University have set out to examine the impact of the tournament on the local population.

    Oxford United announce that manager Gary Waddock has been sacked after only eight games in charge of the League Two club. Former Portsmouth, Blackburn and Blackpool manager Michael Appleton has been placed in charge.

    There are also changes at boardroom level with new investor Darryl Eales named as club chairman.

    "Conditions at the Maracana are overcast and muggy as the finishing touches are put to preparations for today's quarter-final between Germany and France.

    "Police and security are assembling, food and drink kiosks are being stocked, merchandise stands are doing a brisk trade, journalists are typing away, camera crews are getting into position and the pitch is being watered and pruned.

    "With under three hours until kick-off, fans are beginning to arrive - the Germany white, French blue and Brazil yellow in fairly equal measure. Televisions in the media centre are showing repeats of the three previous competitive meetings between these sides - hopefully we'll be treated to another classic today."

    Witnessed Luiz Felipe Scolari's fostering of a siege mentality when he was in charge of Brazil in Japan in 2002, when they won the World Cup of course, and with hosts Portugal at Euro 2004.

    There was an extra edge here in Fortaleza yesterday, however, as there will clearly be a faction of the Brazilian media who may just delight in his downfall after he held a briefing with a small, select group of journalists. His use of a psychologist has also been scorned by the likes of 1970 World Cup-winning captain Carlos Alberto.

    Win the World Cup on home soil and all will be forgiven - anything else and all will be remembered.

    The atmosphere is already building in Fortaleza as the sound of firecrackers can be heard along the seafront here. Promises to be quite a day.

    Across the border meanwhile, German auto giant Volkswagen cancelled the late shift for 4,000 workers at its main plant in the northern city of Wolfsburg.

    Netherlands and Costa Rica will bring an end to the quarter-finals in Brazil and the odds are stacked heavily in the favour of the Dutch. Costa Rica, however, are in the form of their lives.

    Netherlands have won 10 of their last 11 World Cup matches, with the only blip in this run being their 2010 final defeat against Spain. Costa Rica meanwhile are unbeaten in four World Cup games for the very first time (W2 D2).
