Enner Valencia scored both goals as Ecuador beat Honduras 2-1. Carlo Costly latched on to a long ball to put Honduras ahead, but Valencia finished from a deflected cross and then headed in a winner at the far post.

Honduras have now lost both of their first two group games, but can still qualify if they beat Switzerland and Ecuador lose to France on Wednesday. Match highlights.

We asked who was to blame for England's early World Cup exit. These are some more of your comments:

Ian in Bristol: Roy Hodgson has done the best he can with what he has to pick from. We lack world-class defenders. Paul Scholes was right about Wayne Rooney, way past his best. England and Manchester United should ditch him now.

Andy in Armagh: Lack of leadership, poor finishing and awful defensive play from their full-backs have cost England at this World Cup. We're just not up to scratch when it comes to playing the big teams. The best opposition players will punish any weakness at this level, and Luis Suarez certainly did.

BBC Sport's Ben Smith was in Recife to see Costa Rica's qualification.

In his feature, he writes: "There has been a fearlessness about Costa Rica - a belief that anything is possible and reputations mean nothing. The world may have doubted Costa Rica, but Costa Rica never doubted themselves.

"The faces of the players after the deserved 1-0 victory over Italy told a story. There was pure joy, total disbelief and, above all, excitement at what they had achieved and what lies ahead.

"Jorge Luis Pinto lifted his players into the air one after the other. Then he stood still with his arms wide open, taking it all in, capturing a moment he will never forget."

France thumped Switzerland 5-2 on Friday, a result that secured their second victory of the competition. The performance was described as 'dizzying' by national newspaper L'Equipe.

L'Equipe has every reason to get excited. That's now seven games without defeat for the French, and they only need to draw against Ecuador on Wednesday to move into the last 16.

  9. Match reactionpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

France coach Didier Deschamps said: "We were up against a good team and to score five goals and win 5-2, it was a very good evening. Six points after two matches is ideal."

Beaten Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld admitted: "It was a very bleak day for us. The French were ice cold in taking their chances and they had excellent counter-attacks."

Analysis - BBC Radio 5 live's Pat Nevin: "It's really hard to say how bad Switzerland were defensively. They were a shambles, one of the worst you will ever see at a World Cup. France could have scored seven or eight. The movement and quality up front from the French was fantastic, but Olivier Giroud was utterly unplayable."

Still, at least the Switzerland fans looked the part. Or had they just come from a barbecue?

  10. Postpublished at 08:37 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

In Friday's second match, France all but secured a place in the last 16 as three first-half goals helped them to an easy 5-2 Group E win over Switzerland in Salvador.

Arsenal's Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock with a stunning header before Blaise Matuidi hammered home the second 66 seconds later after poor goalkeeping.

Karim Benzema had a penalty saved and Mathieu Valbuena added a third. Goals by Benzema and Moussa Sissoko made it 5-0 before late consolations from Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka.

We asked who is to blame for England's World Cup exit. Here are a few suggestions, including one from a very happy Scotsman:

Stephen in Dunfermline: Just checked the record books and Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland were never eliminated from a World Cup with a group game still left to play. The only home nations team to do it - England yesterday. If I was English I would be embarrassed. Thankfully I'm not.

Colin in High Wycombe: Why is Roy Hodgson escaping with no criticism? He didn't have the courage to make the big calls - recall John Terry, start with Ross Barkley and Adam Lallana and drop Wayne Rooney. When we needed a goal against Italy he brought on three midfielders - I thought Fabio Capello had returned.

    Now, now Stephen. Play fair.

  13. Van Persie backs Rooneypublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United striker partner Robin van Persie has backed the England forward's performances in Brazil.

England have scored twice so far in two games, with Rooney getting one goal and making the other one, but he has missed other chances, including a close-range header against Uruguay that hit the crossbar.

"I don't think you can blame him for scoring a goal, working his socks off and missing three chances by inches," said Netherlands striker Van Persie. "Wayne is a great player and part of why I came to Manchester United."

Some early reaction on Twitter to our question of who, if anyone, is to blame for England's early World Cup exit?

Tim Wood:, external Blame the players all you want but it's Hodgson that picks the team. Why take Ox, Shaw, Smalling, Lambert etc if not going to play?

Paul:, external Why are we looking to blame someone? Collectively as a squad we just were not good enough. Stop looking for scapegoats.

Douglas Law:, external We can't afford to play the blame game, we need to learn from this, clearly changes are necessary, but no one has to be blamed.

  18. The reaction from English newspaperspublished at 07:43 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

The back pages of today's national newspapers inevitably lead on England's exit from the 2014 World Cup as well as the Football Association's backing of manager Roy Hodgson.

    Mirror backpageImage source, Mirror

Roy Hodgson was backed to remain in the job by FA chairman Greg Dyke despite them failing to get out of the group stages of a World Cup since 1958.

Here is what the Daily Mail made of it: 'Carry on Roy'.

So after England's elimination from the World Cup was confirmed, we want to know who, if anyone, is to blame for the exit?

Did Roy Hodgson pick the wrong players or tactics, did the players under-perform, was there too much pressure placed on them by the media? Is the lack of English players in the Premier League a crucial factor? Is the Football Association to blame for picking the wrong manager or not doing enough to improve coaching standards?
