  5. Time to rotate the squad?published at 07:27 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

Costa Rica's win means England have been knocked out of the World Cup at the group phase for the first time since 1958.

It also means England's match against Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday is little more than a chance for the younger players to gain some more first-team experience.

  6. Match reactionpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luiz Pinto said: "We knew we could make history and we have done that. It was a beautiful match and the people of Costa Rica deserve this day. They have supported the team and me and this was for them."

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli said: "We came into this game with too slow a pace and Costa Rica were well-organised so our approach was not of the best."

Asked if he had a message for England, who had been relying on an Italian victory, Prandelli added: "I am terribly sorry, not just for the English but also for us as we wanted to win."

Analysis - BBC pundit Robbie Savage: "An unbelievable performance from Costa Rica. In every single department, they were better than Italy. Second balls, first into the tackle, a great goal and they should have had a penalty."

  7. Postpublished at 07:22 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

So England's World Cup dream has died, but few could have predicted the final blow.

With Roy Hodgson's side needing Italy to beat Costa Rica, Jorge Luis Pinto's team produced their second shock victory of this year's competition.

  9. England's harsh realitypublished at 07:00 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

    Think back to last Saturday.

Roy Hodgson's youthful squad were about to begin their World Cup campaign and optimism was rising.

Would this be the tournament where Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard would finally shine? Would Daniel Sturridge be the star of the competition? No-one expected England to win it, but the quarter-finals and even semi-finals were mentioned as possible targets.

Less than a week later, those hopes have been smashed to pieces as reality has hit hard.

Played two. Lost two. Over and out.
