"It was over the top from Marchisio and the ref was right on the spot. We'd said before that this was bubbling under with some of the challenges and he is a victim of what went before."

"It seems a little bit harsh but the studs were high and Marchisio has gone over the top of the ball. By the letter of the law, yes, you can give a red card but there have been worse fouls this afternoon."

"That decision has lifted the noise levels inside Estadio das Dunas. At first glance it looked like a simple coming together but the referee has got that one right. Claudio Marchisio's studs are up and he makes contact high on Egidio Arevalo's leg. All of a sudden Italy, having had a measure of control, are going to face 30 minutes of all guns blazing from Uruguay."

Claudio Marchisio can have no complaints about that. Italy's players, led by skipper Gianluigi Buffon, surround the referee, but Marco Rodriguez has made his decision.

Thirty minutes for Uruguay to craft a way through a stubborn Italian defence or they are out of the World Cup.

Suddenly, Cristian Rodriguez plays a love one-two with Luis Suarez and the Atletico Madrid man has sight of goal. But he drills a great chance wide.

"Italy would love it if this stays 0-0. They are the team to achieve it. I said earlier about the dark arts from Italy but Uruguay aren't bad at the dark arts themselves."

Can Luis Suarez rescue Uruguay from World Cup elimination?

The Liverpool striker is a figure of frustration. He has rarely threatened the Italy net.

To be fair, the Italian defence is doing a terrific job. This game has 0-0 written all over it.

Another frustrating afternoon for Mario Balotelli. As well as being on the receiving end of some strong challenges he picked up a booking that will rule him out of the second round, should the Italians get there and was promptly taken off at the break. Why always me indeed.

A red card surely cannot be far away.

We've only been under way a few minutes yet Uruguay's Egidio Rios has been cautioned while Italy substitute Marco Parolo escapes after a horrible challenge on Martin Caceres.
