The time has come to wrap this. Diego Costa's Chelsea career is up and running. So too Jose Mourinho's season. The new-look, big-spending Blues mean business. For Burnley, they need to learn fast if they are to survive. We're back on Tuesday as Arsenal take their first steps on the Champions League road they hope will lead all the way to Berlin on 6 June 2015. Until then.

Burnley's tough start

So, what next for Burnley? Well, it's a testing game at Swansea, fresh from a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United, on Saturday before a home match against. . .Manchester United. As Sean Dyche rightly points out, there are no easy games at this level. Not one.

Referee Michael Oliver showed he is lacking experience by booking Chelsea's Diego Costa against Burnley, claims former Premier League match official Graham Poll.

Replays showed that Costa had been fouled and Chelsea should have been awarded a penalty.

"Michael Oliver is an excellent referee but still inexperienced at the very top level dealing with world-class players," Poll tells the Daily Mail. "He met one at Turf Moor in Diego Costa."

Jon in Bristol: After a game like this, Burnley must reflect and ask themselves "Did we do ourselves proud? Did we try hard enough?" If they can answer those questions positively then they can consider the game a success. This Chelsea side are title contenders, and rather than beat themselves up, the Clarets must look to every silver lining in order to build momentum for the rest of the season.

Jenni in Newtownards: Cesc Fabregas will be the Chelsea player who gets all of headlines and the praise, but he is only allowed to shine because of the work-rate, industry and the often unseen work of his midfield partner Nemanja Matic. Without him holding things together in front of the back four, Chelsea and Fabregas wouldn't look or play the same way. Matic is definitely the unsung hero of the side.

Rangers hammer Clyde

Elsewhere, it's been raining goals in Scotland with Rangers cruising into the third round of the Petrofac Training Cup with an 8-1 win over Clyde at Ibrox. A crowd of 11,190 witnessed Kris Boyd help himself to a hat-trick and Lewis Macleod and current captain Lee McCulloch each score two. Fraser Aird scored the other, while Kevin Watt cracked in a last-minute consolation for Clyde.

Kev Mcveigh: Chelsea have never relied heavily on strikers, they get goals from midfield and defence unlike some teams.

A great ball into the box from Branislav Ivanovic and Diego Costa was, like all good strikers, the quickest to react to put it away."

Well, the London club are not behind for long - and it is the new £32m signing who has drawn them level. A low cross from the right by Branislav Ivanovic takes a deflection, runs right across the Burnley box and hits the base of the post. It then rebounds invitingly into the path of Diego Costa, who slots home from six yards. A goal that will not please Sean Dyche.

Incredible. Burnley are in dreamland as Scott Arfield produces a composed finish from just inside the Chelsea area that leaves Thibaut Courtois clutching at thin air after Chelsea's defence had failed to deal with the first corner of the game for the hosts.

From Andrew: Chelsea and Jose Mourinho had no option but to side with youth and select Thibaut Courtois as their number one goalkeeper. He is the future and there's no time like the present to integrate him into the side to develop a partnership with the defenders in front of him. Chelsea should also respect Petr Cech and give him the option to move on to another club to persue first team football if he wishes to do so.

We've all heard of second season syndrome - the term used to describe a downturn in fortunes for a football club two seasons after its promotion to the Premier League.

15 minutes to kick-off

Fifteen minutes and counting. Clarets fans are in good voice as kick-off nears. Chelsea fans have travelled in big numbers and the noise from all four ends of the ground is already generating a cracking atmosphere. The Turf Moor pitch looks immaculate.

Hmm, not taken long for Barca to take the lead against Leon in their pre-season friendly, Lionel Messi converting a cross from Neymar after three minutes.

Remember the last time Burnley graced the Premier League stage?

An awful lot has happened at Turf Moor in the 1,562 days since the Clarets signed off the 2009-2010 campaign with a 4-2 win over a Tottenham team featuring Gareth Bale. Indeed the only survivor from the 18 on duty for the hosts that day is defender Michael Duff, who was an unused substitute.

The 36-year-old cost just £30,000 when Burnley brought him from Cheltenham Town in 2004. It would require 1,067 Duffs to reach the fee spent on Diego Costa.

Burnley might be facing a season of struggle, but boss Sean Dyche believes his players will be among the smartest and most polite in the Premier League this season.

"I learned good moral values from Brian Clough," says the 43-year-old former Nottingham Forest youth team player. "From my parents too. Manners, being polite, respectful. Our players don't walk off the coach with their cans (headphones) around their neck.

"They are smart in and out of the building. I'm a humble lad with good morals from my parents. Work hard. If you have to clean the floor, make it the cleanest floor ever."

I can confirm that not one Clarets player was wearing 'cans' when they arrived at Turf Moor. All were dressed in club tracksuits carrying wash bags - and most were wearing smiles.

Testing times for Jose

No silverware in 2013-14. A demanding owner. These are testing times for Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea manager must deliver the goods if he is to survive, according to Daily Mail columnist Martin Samuel.

The 51-year-old Portuguese won two league titles and two League Cups during his first stint in charge of Chelsea, but was sacked four months after his only FA Cup triumph in 2007.

Samuel writes: "When Mourinho was first retained after a disappointing campaign, he did not make it out of September. Second time around, he has been given more time, a year to shape a younger team and this whole season to make it work — but one imagines there the indulgence ends. Mourinho knows what is expected and the attitude that is required to deliver it. He is preparing for his toughest season."

Rian Hoskins: Petr Cech has been excellent but Thibaut Courtois can still improve and be the best around. Hope Cech stays but will understand if he goes.

Favour Teibowei: I don't see why a club with two good goalkeepers should have a No 1. They should rotate them every three games.

As expected, there is no Luis Suarez in the starting line-up for Barcelona tonight as they take on Leon in a pre-season friendly. Neymar does though. As does Messi. No shortage of star quality at the Nou Camp this season.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique says striker Luis Suarez could play a "few minutes" in a friendly against Mexican champions Club Leon later on Monday.

Suarez's four-month ban for biting an opponent was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) last week.

But the Uruguay striker, 27, can now train and play in friendly matches, and Enrique said: "He has been working hard when training alone. So I think he can have a few minutes in front of the fans."

Barca's new summer signings are expected to be unveiled to the club's fans before the match against Leon. So not only Suarez, but goalkeepers Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, central defenders Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen and midfielder Ivan Rakitic. Josip Masip has made the step up from Barcelona B and Rafinha, who was on loan at Celta last season.

The match starts at 19:30 BST.

Cech or Courtois?

His season has not even started but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho already faces a huge dilemma. Will it be Petr Cech or Thibaut Courtois keeping goal?

Cech has been first choice keeper for a decade and insisted during pre-season that he would not want to stay at Stamford Bridge if he is put on the bench.

And, according to the Evening Standard, the three-time Premier League winner could be on his way out, with the newspaper reporting that Mourinho is set to start with Courtois.

Farewell to a broadcasting great

Some sad news to bring you now. Broadcasting great James Alexander Gordon died peacefully on Monday morning at the age of 78.

James was, of course, synonymous with reading the classified football results on BBC radio for 40 years before his retirement last year.

He was not only a broadcasting legend, but also a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed by everyone at BBC Sport.

This time last year Burnley were playing Yeovil at Turf Moor. Now they're hosting the multi-millionaires of Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho has reacted to last season's trophy-less campaign by shelling out more than £77m on new players, including a cool £32m on Diego Costa. Burnley's most expensive summer signing? Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz, who cost £1.5m from Middlesbrough.

West London swagger collides with east Lancashire grit.

The casualties are scattered far and wide.

Since the first day of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992, when Sheffield United's Brian Deane felled Manchester United, the opening round of top-flight games has proved a minefield for the big-spending superpowers.
