"Great run again from Gervinho. Zabaleta with a weak challenge. No penalty though, he has gone down very easily. He could have been booked for that."

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

    Penalty for Roma?! No.

Gervinho slaloms through the Manchester City defence with the pace and precision of a Winter Olympic skiier, but goes down under a faint challenge from Pablo Zabaleta. Think he lost his footing rather than being fouled.

Then, almost in a blink of an eye, it is Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis's turn to get some muck on his gloves.

James Milner breaks down the right channel of the home penalty box, but can't beat De Sanctis from a tight angle. The chances are arriving quicker than trains on the Jubilee line....

Manchester City stopper Joe Hart has been the busiest of the two keepers - and comes to the rescue on two more occasions.

First Hart blocks former team-mate Maicon's shot before Radjo Nainggolan sets up Gervinho, who can't beat the England keeper with a low shot. Both pretty routine saves to be fair.

And here's another sign. City defensive midfielder Fernando sticks in a foot to expertly break up a Roma attack as the visitors spring forward.

The Blues have numbers forward, only for the move to break down when Pablo Zabaleta is penalised for a foul on on-loan Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. Manuel Pellegrini laughs at that decision - but I don't think he finds it funny.

Italy coach Antonio Conte, easily recognisable with his fine head of transplanted hair, watches on from the Stadio Olimpico stands. He will be happy with what he has seen so far, presuming he is wanting a home win of course.

But City have shown a few signs that they can nick the win they need.

Michael Smyth:, external Dzeko is a terrible finisher the amount of chances he gets he should be scoring 30 a season. City need a new striker.

Dennis Waithera:, external I struggle to remember the last time Jesus Navas was such an influential in a game And still he is picked ahead of Milner.

Andy Guest:, external Jesus Navas. Discuss. Promises much. Delivers little.

"City have weathered the early storm. Roma caused problems down the right but it has settled down and City are causing problems of their own now."

Roma jab forward on the offensive again, probing City's defence with a swinging corner from the left. But City keeper Joe Hart rises above plenty of bodies in his six-yard box to punch clear the danger.

Stand-in skipper Hart has been excellent so far, leading from the front. Or back. You know what I mean.

City are starting to show more attacking intent now - and they have to. A goalless draw suits Roma remember because that scoreline, coupled with a CSKA Moscow defeat at Bayern Munich, would send them through at City's expense.

Another dangerous cross from Jesus Navas skims the head of Edin Dzeko and flies out for a goal-kick.

Edin Dzeko showed his rustiness there after having barely played in the past month or so. And he shows his keenness to make up for lost time a few seconds later when he leads with his arm to concede a free-kick in the Roma box. Which is a shame because Jesus Navas fired in the loose ball after the whistle had gone.

City settle into their stride - and could be 1-0 to the good. Slick build-up from the away side between Jesus Navas and Samir Nasri ends in the Frenchman picking out Edin Dzeko with a low cross from the right byeline. But Dzeko cannot keep his header down.

Remi Akinyombo:, external It's great to see Gervinho playing well, but he's making one of the best right backs on the EPL look less than average!

Matthew Penistone:, external Gervinho looks tidy. I think he would look good in the Prem. Maybe at a side like Arsenal. Come on Wenger snap him up!

Is this game over for Sporting Lisbon already? Nemanja Matic plays the ball across to World Cup winner Andre Schurrle, who strokes the ball into the corner of the net past the reach of Rui Patricio from 18 yards. Expert finish.

"What a save. Joe Hart, absolutely outstanding save from Gervinho's shot. He was going towards his near post, has had to check to go the other side. I can't tell you how good a save that was."

A decent chance at either end - and a decent save at either end. First James Milner's low shot is blocked by Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis, before the home side break quickly again.

Luckily Joe Hart is alert to drop down low to his right and push out Gervinho's angled drive.

Great news for City fans. Germany attacker Thomas Muller puts already-qualified Bayern ahead against CSKA Moscow, whose result City must better to qualify for the last 16.

Unless this game stays 0-0. So as things stand Roma would go through with Bayern.

End-to-end stuff now. Jesus Navas fizzes in a low cross across the face of the Roma goal that is begging for a City touch. But one doesn't arrive and Roma break quickly. Miralem Pjanic leads the charge, goes all alone and whacks a rising shot well over Joe Hart's goal.
