Thumbs up to City for their performance tonight - and thumbs up to this man. Two more English sides move into the next stage of European competition after Manchester City survive a tense night in Rome, with a huge debt of gratitude to Joe Hart.

And tomorrow there is more continental fun for a pair of Premier League sides. Everton and Tottenham are in Europa League action, safe in the knowledge that they will still be playing in the competition in the New Year.

City and Hart are glad they're not playing in the Europa League next year. See you tomorrow!

When Yaya Toure trudged off the pitch as City tumbled to defeat against CSKA Moscow last month, he would have been forgiven for thinking he would not play in the Champions League again this season.

But successive wins against Bayern Munich and Roma means Toure will get the opportunity. He returns from his ban for the second leg of City's last-16 tie.

  8. Champions League last-16 drawpublished at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

Time to take a deep breath, reflect and spell out what the final group standings mean for Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of Monday's draw.

The eight group winners are the seeded sides, and will be drawn against the eight runners-up.

But, remember, teams who played each other in the group stage cannot be drawn together in the last 16. For example, Group E runners-up City can't face Bayern Munich.

And teams who play in the same country cannot be drawn together either. So Group D runners-up Arsenal could not face Group G winners Chelsea in the next round.

Henry Winter on City's prospects in the last 16: "When they've got players back and fit, they're going to be quite a threat.

"There's some fantastic places City could go in that last 16 when you look down the sides who've made it through.

"Dortmund isn't the most architecturally pleasing place, but what an atmosphere their fans create in that ground."

"Remember Liverpool scraped through that match against Olympiakos ten years ago. I saw signs of Manchester City coming of age tonight.

"They have come away from home and weathered a storm a little bit, and they were able to grind out a result. It's not necessarily your best football that gets you through in these games."

Daily Telegraph chief football reporter Henry Winter on Joe Hart's performance: "That's the best performance from an English goalkeeper I've seen here since David Seaman for England in 1997.

"He was terrific and made saves at key moments in both halves. He'll get praise alongside the likes of Zabaleta and Milner, who was tireless.

"But, the man who will come out of this the best will be Manuel Pellegrini.

"I hope he goes off and has a nice bottle of red to celebrate."

Sam in Manchester: Superb performance by City. Showed maturity that was lacking under Mancini. Proves we aren't just a one man team, no Kompany, Aguero, Yaya and most of the time no Silva. Hart wearing the armband tonight was sensational. Stunning saves!

The other big question of the night was...could Paris St-Germain nick a draw at Barcelona and stop the Spanish giants progressing as Group F winners?

Manchester City were hoping the French champions could, as it would have meant the English champions would not be able to face Barca in the last-16. And for a while it looked as though PSG could pip them.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic put the away side ahead, before Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez turned the match in Barca's favour.

While City took the long, rocky road to last-16 qualification, there were no such worries for Chelsea.

The Premier League leaders, and particularly their boss Jose Mourinho, are old hands at this Champions League lark. Their passage through to knockout phase was a more comfortable journey, knowing they had already won Group G before tonight's match against Sporting Lisbon.

But there was no mercy from Mourinho on his Portuguese compatriots as the Blues won 3-1 to end Sporting's hopes of joining them in the next stage.

Rosie Parker:, external Well played City. Pellegrini got it tactically spot on, proved some doubters wrong tonight.

Mitch Mansfield:, external A mention for Shakhtar Donetsk - through to knockout stages for 3rd time in 5 years despite extraordinary domestic troubles.

  16. Manager reactionpublished at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini on Monday's Champions League last-16 draw: "We will start thinking about the Champions League again in February. Now we think about the Premier League. We are three points behind Chelsea."

On City's recent form, which has seen them win six straight matches: "Trust has been key. Against Rome in Manchester we played the worst game of the season and we drew. We were sure playing the way we have played in recent weeks we must win."

  17. Manager reactionpublished at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "We recovered our normal performance, playing good pressing and playing well with the ball. We are a solid team, we are recovering the ball in the correct way. I had a lot of trust in what we could do. I said I didn't want to talk about players not in the team. This team deserve a little more credit than the press always give us."

French midfielder Samir Nasri might take most of the plaudits for opening the scoring and generally running the show from that point.

But one man who deserves equally as much credit is Joe Hart. The England keeper made several important saves - none more than the fingertips he got to push Roma defender Kostas Manolas's header on to the post.

And that is why City want to make him the world's best-paid goalkeeper..., external

Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"But they weathered that early storm and once City scored it was all over. Roma never looked like scoring."
