A half-hearted one, but a penalty appeal nonetheless.

Romelu Lukaku's cushioned flick-on invites Steven Naismith forward and the former Rangers man is already on his bike. The ball is never quite under his control though and when he flops to the floor between two Wolfsburg defenders there is not enough for ref Luca Banti to act upon.

Wolfsburg full-back Ricardo Rodriguez has a left peg so educated it holds honorary professor positions at three universities back in Germany. His raking cross fails to pick out one of three men bombing on, but that was better with more bodies in the box for the visitors.

A lovely goal. Lovely, but also a little lucky.

Steven Naismith starts the move, beating his man and slipping the ball to James McCarthy. The former Wigan man turns the ball round the corner to a rampaging Leighton Baines. Baines back to Naismith, whose stabbed effort finds its way into the back of the net only after Ricardo Rodriguez's attempted clearance cannons into the back of his own goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.

The ball was heading away from goal before it struck the unfortunate Benaglio, who had to leave the field shortly afterwards to sort his contact lens out.

Everton survive, but don't make a decisive clearance and former Chelsea man Kevin de Bruyne almost makes something out of the ball bobbling round the edge of the box. His shot thunders into a defender and it was fortunate for Everton it didn't get any further.
