Fancy some more football? Of course you do, so join my colleague Sam Sheringham as he takes you through the action in Spain and Italy, with Atletico Madrid and Juventus currently playing.

Oh and yes, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have already played and both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo scored. Standard.

As for us, it is time to wind down this live text commentary, but we will crank it back up again tomorrow for West Brom v Burnley, which kicks off at 16:00 BST.

    Joe Hart

"If I was Joe Hart and I'm not back in the Man City team soon I'd look to move in January. If you're not playing, you're not first choice for your team, you cannot be first choice for your country.

"It's harsh on Hart, who has played very, very well this season. But if he doesn't play on Tuesday against Roma then it's clear he's not being rested, he's been dropped."

  3. Harsh on Hart?

Hull v Manchester City tops the order on Match of the Day, a game which saw City manager Manuel Pellegrini make the surprise decision to name goalkeeper Joe Hart on the bench.

He was dropped last November but won his place back from Costel Pantilimon. Is Pellegrini wanting to see the same reaction?

  4. Match of the Day

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

There were 21 goals scored in eight Premier League games today, some stunners amongst them, so don't forget to watch Match of the Day on BBC One, 10:30 BST.

    Here is the running order: 1. Hull v Manchester City, 2. Man U v West Ham, 3. Chelsea v Villa, 4. Liverpool v Everton, 5. Southampton v QPR, 6. Arsenal v Spurs, 7. Palace v Leicester, 8. Sunderland v Swansea.

Amar in Wolverhampton: Not good enough from Arsenal. Will Chelsea drop many points at home to teams of Spurs' quality? I doubt it.

Sam: As much as I love Wenger, I think he should go after this season. We need a change, and I think Klopp would be perfect, and he wants to win. I love Wenger as much as the next Gunners fan, but I think it's time for something else for Arsenal.

Andy: Complete rubbish. Arsene has been managing with his hands tied behind his back - wait till the end of the season to judge! Spurs had 30% of the game, says it all.

    League Two

Bury slipped from top spot in League Two after Jimmy Keohane's 83rd minute strike gave Exeter a surprise 2-1 win and ended The Shakers eight-game unbeaten run. The hosts are enjoying a mini-revival after a poor start to the season, having now won three games on the bounce.

Stuart Beavon's left-footed strike was enough to hand Burton Albion a 1-0 win against Cheltenham at the Pirelli Stadium and take top spot.

Gary Rowett's side are one point ahead of second-placed Wycombe, who beat Cambridge 1-0 thanks to Paul Hayes's 63rd minute winner at Adams Park.

  7. Post update

    League One

Wade Elliott's 74th minute strike handed league-leaders Bristol City a 3-2 win in their top-of-the-table clash with MK Dons at Ashton Gate. The Don's fought back from two goals down to make a real game of it but no sooner had Benik Afobe equalised for the visitors in the 73rd minute, than Wade Elliott hit back for the hosts, who extend their unbeaten run to nine games.

Peterborough move into second place and keep the pressure on at the top after Conor Washington's strike just before the break gave Darren Ferguson's side a 1-0 win against Fleetwood at London Road and ended a run of two defeats.

Leyton Orient, who parted company with manager Russell Slade this week, fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1 against Rochdale at Brisbane Road but couldn't hold on for their first home win of the season, eventually going down 3-2 as Matt Done hit a 66th minute winner.

    Championship

Norwich City moved ahead of Nottingham Forest, who were held 0-0 at home to Brighton, at the top of the Championship after fighting back from a goal down to beat Blackpool 3-1 at Bloomfield Road. Nathan Delfouneso handed the Seasiders a 46th minute lead before a Donervorn Daniels own goal levelled the scores and Lewis Grabban and Josh Murphy scored to secure all three points.

Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons boosted his chances of landing the job an a permanent basis after Hugo Rodallega's 71st minute strike handed the Cottagers their first league win of the season. Tim Hoogland's 63rd minute strike cancelled out David Cotterill's opener for Birmingham as Fulham maintained their winning form from the League Cup in midweek.

Darko Milanic's first game as Leeds United manager did not go to plan at Brentford. The Whites headed into the match on an unbeaten four-game run but were handed a 2-0 defeat by the Bees thanks to goals from Jota and Alan McCormack.

  11. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

    Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "I think it is a good result for us. Maybe Arsenal controlled the game and had the ball more than us but we played well and defended well. I am happy with the performance in a tough game. I think the draw is fair.

"We scored a great goal. This is our philosophy, which is difficult to keep for 90 minutes at the moment, but we are on our way."

  12. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "We had a lot of the ball and it finished 1-1 so I am frustrated. We had good spirit and determination. We had 77% possession in the second half which is unbelievable. I am frustrated because we dropped two points and I am frustrated because we didn't make enough of our set-pieces. You want to be rewarded for the work you put in.

"You always want to create more but that is the Premier League now, teams sit deep. I had reduced options as well because I lost players. I had only one option for an attacking player to bring on at half-time."

When asked if Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta would be fit for the Champions League game on Wednesday: "No chance. If it is a muscular problem I don' t see how they can be fit in five or six days time."

  14. Player reaction

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Tottenham goalscorer Nacer Chadli, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm very happy to score in the derby. Erik [Lamela] gave me the ball and I just tried to shoot into the far corner.

"We defended well and with the pace we have we could cause Arsenal problems. As a team we fought for each other and that is important for the team spirit. We have one point at the Emirates and that is not bad."

    Nacer Chadli
  15. Post update

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Ryan Mason had a good game for Tottenham, especially after making his league debut in such a fixture.

The midfielder had rave reviews during his stint at Swindon last season, and evidently a bit of graft in League One has been character building for the 23-year-old.

Ian Marks: Good result for Spurs - it does beg the question why they can't defend as good as that on a regular basis...

Dax Fullbrook: Thank goodness for Lloris.

Kuntal Majumdar: Hugo Lloris - man of the match for me! David De Gea should take lessons from this man in motivation and goalkeeping.

  17. Player reaction

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who scored his first goal of the season, speaking to Sky Sports: "We did well to come back, but when we made it 1-1 we pushed on and tried to get the winner.

"Sometimes it's not about the best football, it's about who wants to win it more. In the second half we settled down and started to pass the ball more.

"I'll be working on scoring more as I have the potential to do that, but I also have my role to do defensively. As long as the boss gives me the licence to drive forwards and try and take people on I'm not too fussed where I play.

"We would have liked to have played some better football but it is important that we are not losing games. First and foremost we have to defend and then the more fluid side of our game will come."

    Possession

Tottenham had just 31% of the possession in that game, their second lowest in a Premier League fixture from 2006-07 onwards. They are now without a win since the end of August.

  19. Chasing the game

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

The draw maintains Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season in the Premier League but something Arsene Wenger will surely be keen to address sooner rather than later is the fact they have had to come from behind in four of their six games this season.

They are fourth with 10 points, six behind leaders Chelsea.

  20. Post update

Former QPR and Charlton forward Bradley Allen

    BBC London Digital Radio

"Tottenham showed a good, strong defensive spirit that kept them in the game. They did score against the run of play at the start of the second half, playing on the counter-attack. Arsenal dominated the lion's share of the game but didn't fashion that many opportunities.

"The Gunners just ran out of ideas and steam and they put in the effort and chased the game in the closing stages. Spurs will be happy with this result, while Arsenal will be a tad disappointed."

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Former QPR and Charlton forward Bradley Allen

"A massive response form Arsenal. The crowd drove them on over the last 10 minutes. Spurs didn't clear their lines well enough, and after Welbeck scuffed his shot it broke to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who slammed his shot into the roof of the net. And Tottenham just couldn't hold out, as Arsenal get back on level terms and are now really on top."

  39. GOAL

    Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Well, it has been coming. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain equalises for Arsenal but Tottenham will be kicking themselves after being punished for lazily attempting to clear. "This is an intriguing passage of play right now. If Arsenal can get an equaliser then expect wave after wave of Gunners attacks. But if Spurs can withstand that pressure then they could break and get one of their own, and move towards winning three points on their travels.

"Arsene Wenger is getting a little frustrated, as are the supporters, who can see it's not really happening for Arsenal. But Spurs are doing the right thing, slowing the speed of the match down and killing off the game a little."

Another yellow card for Arsenal, this time going to Jack Wilshere after his late challenge on Ryan Mason. From the resulting free-kick, Emmanuel Adebayor just fails to make a telling connection, as his header is straight at Wojciech Szczesny.

  88. Manager reaction

    Sunderland 0-0 Swansea

    Garry Monk

Swansea manager Garry Monk: "It was definitely a good point the way the game panned out and going down to 10 men.

"We showed character in adversity and I thought the boys defended admirably and we deserved a point. They had a couple of headers and when we were down to 10 men threw a lot forward but apart from that we limited them to hardly anything.

"We weren't as fluid as we have been but there will be games like that and then you have to do the basics right."

    Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's pace sees him get the better of Danny Rose and he sends a deep cross into the area from the right which is picked up by Danny Welbeck, who works himself a bit of an opening and shoots low from the edge of the area, but Hugo Lloris is behind the shot and scoops up the ball.

    Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal are seeing plenty of the ball but not really making it count, highlighted by a Mesut Ozil corner into the area failing to find a red and white shirt and Tottenham clear easily. Spurs are defending quite well and have shown glimpses of being dangerous on the break. Tense affair.

    Phil McNulty

"Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is fired up for this. Stalking the touchline constantly and has already been involved in a couple of heated exchanges with the fourth official. The message to his own team seems to be not to drop too deep and invite Arsenal pressure - seems reasonable."

  93. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

Great stuff from Danny Welbeck as he flicks the ball past Jan Vertonghen and drives towards goal. He has no support, though, and has to have a crack at goal, but Younes Kaboul is back to make the crucial block.

  95. YELLOW CARD

  98. Rooney's red card

    Man Utd 2-1 West Ham

    Wayne Rooney

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on Wayne Rooney's red card: "It was a break-out of a set-play of ours and he makes a professional foul I think you can call it like that. I don't think Wayne wanted to do it that way but he did it and you can give a red card.

"Luke Shaw was always injured but now I could play with him for 90 minutes. He had a little cramp and it was amazing he lasted 90 minutes. Also, Paddy McNair played a very good match and I'm very pleased for him that we won.

"The rhythm of the game is very high. You cannot compare it with Germany and Spain. There is always pressure on the ball. Most of the English teams play physically. We have to keep the ball more easily and then we can improve our play."

Danger for Tottenham as Danny Welbeck steals possession midway inside the away team's half, Jack Wilshere then races away with the ball before feeding a pass to Aaron Ramsey on the right side of the area, but the midfielder drives a low effort straight at Hugo Lloris.

  101. Manager reaction

    Man Utd 2-1 West Ham

    Louis van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "The win is very important, you can imagine that. We played a very good first half with attractive football. We conceded again a goal from in set-plays. Maybe you can watch that their number 15 makes a foul on goalkeeper David De Gea.

"But OK, I am very happy that we hold the result until the end because it is very difficult to play against a team who have one more player but who also play a lot of high balls. I am very pleased with the attitude of my players."

"It's a big responsibility for young Ryan Mason of Tottenham. He's been out on loan at numerous clubs and he scored midweek in the League Cup, but these are the big boys tonight. And what a fantastic atmosphere inside the Emirates this evening."

  103. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

What a game for Ryan Mason to make his Premier League debut in, the atmosphere is electric! He and his team-mates have not seen too much of the ball yet, though, with Arsenal stroking a few passes around, testing out the Spurs backline.

  104. Manager reaction

    Southampton 2-1 QPR

    Harry Redknapp

QPR manager Harry Redknapp: "We came back strongly after their goal and I felt we had every opportunity at that stage of the game but their centre-forward produced a world-class goal. Niko Kranjcar hit a fantastic free-kick but it hit the woodwork and we couldn't get the break.

"We didn't give up today and it was a much better performance. Charlie (Austin) took his goal well today and that's encouraging. He's proven that he can score goals in the Premier League. Southampton are a good side but I felt we stuck at it and we got a bit more belief in ourselves today and we've got to continue to believe."

  107. Manager reaction

    Hull 2-4 Man City

    Steve Bruce

Hull City manager Steve Bruce: "We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. They nearly blew us away in the first 10 minutes. Maybe we showed them too much respect. We were brave or stupid to play two up top. I thought 'we're at home let's give it a go'. We had a couple of chances to take the lead but on the day we weren't good enough.

"They've got quality written throughout the team. The one thing you have to do is defend well. We've conceded four and not done that badly. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say you have been beaten by the better team.

"I was delighted with the attitude. We were brave and it nearly came off. It was pleasing."

"The playing surface here at The Emirates is getting a real soaking pre-match from the sprinklers. Southampton 2-1 QPR

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "It was very tough. We expected that. We told the boys that after last Tuesday (Capital One Cup win over Arsenal) that it'd be more difficult. All the credit to QPR about the second half. We know we have offensive qualities but in a difficult second half, to keep the spirit and the belief to win the game, it was a good compliment to the boys. The most important is that we believe in our way of playing and the second half was a fantastic second half from both sides."

Koeman on Pelle's goal: "You don't score a lot of that kind of goals because it was amazing. It's a great goal. That's a great feeling for him and a great feeling for the club and fans. The support was amazing today."

    BBC Sport

Former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince: "That number 10 role allows you freedom and the goals Mesut Ozil set up and scored against Aston Villa were from the outside left. If you give him freedom that is what will happen, but playing where he has to track players, he is not going to do that.

"At Spurs, when you have Eriksen and Lamela, Adebayor and Soldado, they are quality players but the team is huffing and puffing all the time. It is a slow start for Spurs, they are adapting to Mauricio Pochettino. At Southampton meanwhile, Ronald Koeman has gone in and only had a few things to change, but Pochettino has had to change a lot of things at Spurs."

"When they had a man sent off it was even more like that but we can't put the ball in the net and take advantage of our game. If we were terrible and couldn't pass the ball or create chances I would be worried but the way we played today I am calm.

  119. Indomitable Wenger?

    Arsenal v Tottenham (17:30 BST)

    Arsenal

This isn't just a picture of a mulleted Gerry Francis leaning against a tree. Oh no. This is a picture of the first Tottenham manager Arsene Wenger pitted his wits against. That was back in November 1996, with Arsenal winning that north London derby 3-1.

Since that game 10 Tottenham managers have come and gone. Mauricio Pochettino will today be the 12th Tottenham manager to face Wenger, with the Argentine getting his first taste of the north London derby.

History may not be on his side, but he hopes to be able to emulate the Arsenal boss' longevity, saying: "It's a dream to stay here like [him] or to have the time Arsene had in Arsenal. For this, I need to show my skill, I need to work hard, I need to get the results. You need to work with passion."

A win today would certainly do his long term prospects no harm.

  120. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "It was very good from the beginning. Even during the period the game was 1-0, when it could be open, it was always closed because we controlled the game. We had a big percentage of the ball. When we weren't dangerous we kept the ball. My four defenders and two midfield players were very solid. The result was a consequence of our dominance. The display allowed me to take off Diego Costa to give me a chance to play him on Tuesday [against Sporting Lisbon]."

  121. Manager reaction

    Hull 2-4 Man City

    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "These things can happen. We started very well. We were very unlucky with two individual mistakes through the game.

"He [Eliaquim Mangala] was very unlucky with the own goal and after that he arrived late for the penalty but we continue to trust him because he is a very good player who had very bad luck.

"During the week when we scored seven I felt that the team was tired. I think today we played a very good team. They defended very well and we scored four goals which was very good. It was very important to win three pints here because we cannot allow to drop any more points on Chelsea."

  122. Player reaction

    Man Utd 2-1 West Ham

    Robin van Persie

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie: "We played well. We had to fight in the second half and we did that. I'm very proud. The two debutants (Paddy McNair and Luke Shaw) did great. West Ham have been playing really well, so that's why we were happy with the goals we scored early on."

"If you came here before the game and you write a postscript of what you thought would happen, well the game played out exactly as you might have imagined. "We know how well Chelsea can craft build-up play, and Costa saw a gap of two or three yards, made it, and then a really strong header on the move. A couple of earlier headed chances were missed because he was static but this time on the move he got past the defence and ahead of Brad Guzan.

"Lovely movement and a lovely effort, and that's why he keeps scoring goals."

  182. RED CARD

"Jack Wilshere had a superb game against Manchester City . Mesut Ozil found his form at Aston Villa. Danny Welbeck has hit the ground running and has struck up a good understanding with the World Cup winner. Alexis Sanchez has four goals in his last five games.

"Do Tottenham have anyone to match that? Not on the evidence of the lame performance against West Brom when there were too many artists and not enough artisans prepared to roll their sleeves up and drive a quick early tempo."

    Southampton 0-0 QPR

BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's

"Southampton have been dominant with great chances for Dusan Tadic and Morgan Schneiderlin but QPR have somehow kept out the hosts.

"Saints boss Ronald Koeman became increasingly frustrated as the half wore on and that tells you everything about his ambition and expectations for this game while opposite number Harry Redknapp was relieved to hear Mark Clattenburg blow for the break."

  206. Player reaction

    Liverpool 1-1 Everton

    Steven Gerrard on his free-kick:

"You get a feeling for certain areas when you get a free-kick. I fancied and I got the strike right."

    On Mario Balotelli:

"Balotelli did everything today but get that goal. He had a wonderful chance with ten minutes to go to wrap the game up. He did everything today but score."

  207. Manager reaction

    Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "The players were brilliant. We were clearly the dominant side in the game, but sometimes you don't get what you deserve in football.

"But for a wonder strike at the end of the game we would have got the three points.

"Mario Balotelli should have scored. There was a touch on it [his shot] but I think he will think he should have scored. He had some exceptional touches in the game.

"We should also have had a penalty. If the Gareth Barry handball was not a penalty then you won't see any penalties all year.

"But they get their point and we are happy with the performance, if not the result."

    Brendan Rodgers
  208. Manager reaction

    Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "It was a special strike and he [Phil Jagielka] deserves it. He has been getting a lot of stupid criticism. We saw a man who faces adversity full on.

"Our performance on the ball was not good enough but we never gave up. Our defending was excellent and we always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

"When we were in the final third we got a bit confused and forced the play a little bit too much. Kevin Mirallas getting injured had a big effect on that. What we got today was a real start in our season and real measurement in terms of character and mentality."

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley: Oh my god! What a finish!

  253. GREAT SAVE!

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Leicester

Huge chance for Jamie Vardy to follow up last weekend's heroics with the opener at Selhurst Park. A long ball into the box falls for the Leicester forward, who cuts inside a flying block and shoots from 12 yards but his effort is met by a superb save from keeper Julian Speroni.

At the other end, Fraizer Campbell should do better with a header from 12 yards which is straight at Kasper Schmeichel.

Hull City 0-2 Manchester City - Edin Dzeko (11 mins)

This could be a cricket score. David Silva plays a simple ball into the feet of Edin Dzeko on the edge of the box and the striker cuts inside before curling a right-footed cracker into the top corner. City have now scored nine goals in their last 54 minutes of football. Not bad going.

"And all that came from a poor ball played towards Gabriel Agbonlahor. Chelsea won it, bombed down the other end and scored. That's how dangerous sides are at this level."

"Aston Villa had people running off ill during the warm-up last week. Obviously, those players will feel better now so the team will be stronger. Against Arsenal, for half an hour Villa were very good and had a wonderful chance to take the lead. But they turned their back for just five minutes and found themselves 3-0 down.

Their hosts are enjoying a mini-revival after a poor start to the season, having won their last two games, but both were away from home and they are yet to win at St James' Park.

Fourth-placed Southend host sixth-placed Shrewsbury in a high-profile clash at Roots Hall. Phil Brown's side are climbing up the league after three wins on the trot, while the Shrews slipped in the standings after a 0-0 draw with Newport last Saturday.

Second-placed Burton have now lost two league games on the bounce but will be hoping to preserve their 100% home record when they host seventh-placed Cheltenham.

    League One preview

League-leaders Bristol City put their unbeaten record on the line in a top-of-the-table clash with second-placed MK Dons at Ashton Gate. The Dons have won three of their last four games in the league and head into the match off the back of a 2-0 win over Bradford City in the League Cup. Victory would move the Dons within three points of free-scoring Bristol City, who have netted three goals in each of their last three matches.

Leyton Orient parted company with manager Russell Slade this week as the team with the worst home form in the division look for a change in fortunes. However, with Rochdale the visitors to Brisbane Road today that will be tough. Keith Hill's side head into the match with two clean sheets in back-to-back wins and with 10 of their 16 goals this season coming on the road.

Any slip from the Dons could allow Darren Ferguson's Peterborough side to reclaim second place after two defeats on the road saw them drop down the table. Posh are back at London Road today and host a Fleetwood side who have not won in their last six matches, although Graham Alexander's side fought back from 3-1 down against Bristol City to claim a draw in their last match.

Meanwhile, Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons enjoyed a 2-1 win over Doncaster in the League Cup in midweek and can bolster his bid to take the job on a permanent basis with a positive result against a Birmingham side that are on a seven-game winless run in all competitions, but Blues did hold Norwich to a 2-2 draw last time out.

League leaders Nottingham Forest, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Millwall last weekend and lost 3-1 at Tottenham in the League Cup in midweek, host a Brighton team that registered their first win of the month in the cup in midweek - a 3-0 victory at Burton Albion - but have picked up just two points from a possible 12 in recent fixtures. Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic needs to start pumping iron. In the first half, he was easily brushed aside in his own area by Leighton Baines while, at the other end in the second half, he is again ushered away from the ball when he bursts into the area. "Liverpool had 16 shots on goal in that first half compared to three from Everton, so they will probably feel they should be ahead - their fans definitely do.

"Everton's supporters, packed into a corner of the Anfield Road Stand, had rather less to shout about in the first 45 minutes but they are halfway to what would only be their second clean-sheet of the season. The sun has finally come out for the start of the second half... but will we see any goals?

"Everton look solid down the middle but, and I can't emphasise this enough, if Liverpool can switch play quickly there is so much space down the sides of the pitch. On those occasions when they have done it however, the quality on the final product has been missing."

Hull City v Manchester City (1500 BST)

MOTD's Alan Green at KC Stadium

"Steve Bruce changed his entire Hull starting 11 for Wednesday night's League Cup tie at West Brom, clearly indicating that his priorities lie elsewhere.

"The Premier League is clearly what counts and the manager will want to stop this unfortunate habit of Hull conceding games and points from winning positions - not that they can especially look forward to a visit from the champions.

"Manchester City, you can argue, have been equally inconsistent but they've faced far tougher opposition. I saw those last two games and I don't see much wrong with Manuel Pellegrini's team."

  341. Post update

Chelsea v Aston Villa (15:00 BST)

MOTD's Martin Fisher at Stamford Bridge

"September closes with Chelsea boasting the only unbeaten record in league and cup across the country.

"Though their 100% winning start in the Premier League was ended by that late equaliser by old boy Frank Lampard last Sunday, Chelsea's lead over defending champions Manchester City is five points. Among their potential title rivals, Arsenal are just a point closer.

"Villa's record at Stamford Bridge is poor and given the mood of manager Jose Mourinho's men it is difficult to see anything other than a home victory in this one."

  342. Post update

    Sunderland v Swansea (15:00 BST)

    Alistair Mann

BBC Match of the Day commentator at the Stadium of Light

"With all the media attention on Newcastle, Sunderland's disappointing start to the new campaign has passed by relatively unnoticed outside the boundaries of Wearside.

"Without a league win in their opening five games, they begin the weekend only just above a relegation zone they became familiar with for most of a troublesome campaign last time.

"Swansea certainly won't be pushovers, particularly as they've been winless recently following a faultless August. That said, their two successive defeats were against the current top two."

  343. Post update

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 BST)

    John Motson

BBC Match of the Day commentator at Old Trafford

"I can't remember a match in modern times when Manchester United have needed a result more than they do this weekend.

"United have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season and that's even more remarkable considering they are yet to face a team who finished higher than 12th last season.

"Old Trafford is hardly a lucky ground for West Ham, with 16 defeats in their 18 Premier League meetings and just two victories. Even with a record as bad as theirs, West Ham can go into Saturday full of confidence. Old Trafford is no longer the fortress it once was."

  344. Post update

    Southampton v QPR (15:00 BST)

    John Roder

Match of the Day commentator at St Mary's

"QPR haven't made a positive beginning to the season - losing 4-0 in both their Premier League away matches to date. You can see why the visiting fans might not be in the most expectant of moods on Saturday, especially with Southampton having had an excellent week.

"The League Cup win at Arsenal was preceded by victory at Swansea, where Victor Wanyama became the first Kenyan to score in the Premier League, and the 91st different nationality to do so.

"Naming the other 90 would be quite a quiz question. It might prove a diversion for the QPR fans on their way home on Saturday night, particularly if they go down to another heavy away defeat."

  345. Post update

Crystal Palace v Leicester (15:00 BST)

MOTD commentator Tony Husband at Selhurst Park

"Last weekend, both these teams raised eyebrows with unexpected and impressive victories that gives this Saturday's game between the two a very different complexion.

"For Neil Warnock and Crystal Palace, the victory at Everton seemed like a moment where a page was turned. Warnock is a character and it is nice to see someone bouncing up and down in a tracksuit in an era when we are more accustomed to the suited and booted manager in club tie.

"Pearson is a more reserved character, but his stock has continued to rise. The Foxes had a daunting early set of fixtures but have already held Arsenal and produced the comeback of comebacks against Manchester United last Sunday. The two games involving these sides featured 13 goals last week - here's hoping for another thriller!"

"The final product has not been of the highest standard but this is quite an open game. There will be goals I am certain, and it will come from a changeover of possession and a quick counter attack. When Liverpool go forward Everton look dangerous on the break if they get that first pass off. But the space on the Everton right is massive for the Liverpool players.

Tom from south London: Three big decision in the first 10 minutes. Martin Atkinson bottled all of them. Should have been two penalties and a red card for Gareth Barry.

Gareth in Clapham: Both Everton and Liverpool have spent vast amounts of money over the transfer window and you can't see any real benefit yet as both teams look worse than last year. Everton spent £24 million on a player they already had as a loanee when they should have invested in their central defence. Liverpool spent over £100 million trying to replace the irreplaceable, and unsurprisingly failed.

Mario Balotelli is struggling to influence very much here. Again he is robbed by Gareth Barry before, in the very next move, he manages to hold off the midfielder but his shot is meat and drink for Tim Howard.

"The tempo has slowed slightly on the pitch and the fans seem to be feeling less frantic in the stands too. Well, a little bit anyway - the Liverpool fans around me remain easily excited, especially when Mario Balotelli gets on the ball, or even goes near it, although I suppose with that hair-cut he is quite easy to pick out. The wait for his first Premier League goal for the Reds goes on, however."

Liverpool continue to be sloppy in possession and Aiden McGeady should do better when he nips in behind the full-back down the left but his ball is too close to Simon Mignolet. If only he had looked up, Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy were in good shooting positions on the edge of the area.

  359. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

"This is a cat and mouse game. Everton are trying to push the full-backs back, while Liverpool have the confidence and belief to send one on. You do not want to over-commit and leave yourself exposed, but it is worth the risk.

"I am surprised Leighton Baines did not have a go himself then, he has such great technique and a great left foot but he was unselfish and looked for the pass across goal.

"Because of our position in the commentary box, after this game I am ringing up the BBC and asking for danger money. There were two ladders to get up here - they never told me that! I've never been so high up in my life!"

"The big opportunities so far have come from the corners, and the two penalty shouts. Everton and Liverpool both had claims for penalties, and the referee Martin Atkinson could have given both of them.

"But Liverpool can cause Everton problems if they switch play, coming from one side to the other quickly. Alberto Moreno is trying to get forward as much as he can and Romelu Lukaku does not want to follow him. Everton have really packed the midfield and the space is there on the switch."

  365. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

The match seems to have calmed down a little now. All that pent-up tension has dissipated and both teams are settling into a rhythm - one where Liverpool do most of the attacking, and Everton look to counter with energetic efficiency.

It's all encapsulated when Raheem Sterling picks out Mario Balotelli in the area, and the striker's poor effort gifts possession to the Toffees who sweep up the other end and Romelu Lukaku's shot is saved by Simon Mignolet.

A fresh dab of paint might not be a bad idea.

"Liverpool supporters have probably seen enough penalties here for one week and, in any case, Everton fans are probably not holding out much hope of adding to that remarkable penalty tally today - the Toffees have only had one penalty awarded at Anfield since 1937, and none since Wayne Clarke scored from the spot here in 1988."

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Everton captain David Weir, who skippered his side to victory at Anfield in 1999, on 5 live: "It's been too long since Everton last won at Anfield, so let's hope today's a good day if you're a Toffees fan. It's always difficult to go to Anfield and get a result - we weren't favourites when we won there in 1999, and probably Everton aren't favourites again today. But in a local derby there's always that element of uncertainty.

"Derbies are the worst games to lose, because there's such local pride at stake. You feel the build-up in the week preceding the game and then the affects afterwards.

"If you lose you just don't want to come out of the house, the weekend is ruined, the following week is ruined. The players know that and the vast majority have played in a Merseyside derby before. So it's sore feeling when you lose, but on the other hand it feels great when you win."

    Former Blackburn striker

"Everton have this hoodoo going to Liverpool and the way they have been performing lately I can't see it changing. As for Liverpool, Mario Balotelli is certainly a goalscorer. But he doesn't offer what Luis Suarez offered in terms of mobility, decisiveness and getting around the pitch."

The Merseyside derby is supposedly the one where families go to the game together, some in red shirts, others in blue... but I could only find one example outside Anfield today - Liverpool fan Barry Griffiths and his Everton supporting step-son Flynn from Cardiff.

This is their first derby together, and Flynn's first Everton game full-stop, although Barry did bring him to Anfield last season to watch the Reds get beaten by Southampton.

"I had been up here 16 times before and never seen us lose," says Barry. Flynn is hoping for a similar outcome today.

Just been told Tony Hibbert's first start since playing against Manchester City on 1 December 2012. Only the big games for Tony, eh.

Since becoming a professional with the Goodison Park club in March 2001, he has yet to score in a competitive game in 320 outings. What a day it would be to break that record.

Dan in Chiswick: Nothing will beat Blues stuffing Villa 3-0 at St Andrews in our first season in the Premier League, thanks to Peter Enckelman's own-goal!

Ollie from Bristol: My best derby day was the day West Brom tore Wolves apart 5-1. That was the day they lost hope of staying up, and effectively the day Mick McCarthy got fired. Ah, good times!

Jonny in Bradford: It has to be the Bradford v Leeds game this season! 0-0 and nearing extra time, Leeds scored to break City hearts, then we came back and shut the Leeds fans up with two goals in three minutes. Only in a derby do you have that passion and emotion!

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, speaking to BT Sport: "We need a reaction. The start of the season has not been good enough and we need to get that intensity back when we don't have the ball and try to score early and get the crowd behind us. If you can't get yourself up for a derby game at Anfield, you're in the wrong game so I hope the lads don't need much rallying."

Ben Franklin: Hoping Liverpool stick to a diamond today, with Adam Lallana alongside Jordan Henderson and Lazar Markovic behind Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Manquillo, Moreno, Lovren, Skrtel, Gerrard, Henderson, Markovic, Lallana, Sterling, Balotelli

    Derby day memories

Dom in London: My first derby memory would be sitting fairly satisfied with a 1-0 half time lead against Newcastle, before leaving a dejected Stadium of Light to a 1-4 final score. Michael Chopra even managed to get in on the scoring. The tide has thankfully turned somewhat since.

Sean from Swindon: Port Vale v Stoke, 12th March 1996. Ian Bogie scores for Vale after 12 seconds, and we hold on comfortably for 90 minutes to win 1-0.

  415. Creaking defences

    Liverpool v Everton (12:45 BST)

The defences of Liverpool and Everton have been as safe as a 50p padlock so far this season.

You wouldn't have thought the Toffees would have conceded the most goals in the Premier League to date but they have - letting in 13 in just five games.

Liverpool haven't been faring much better, they have shipped eight in five. There have to be goals at Anfield today then doesn't there?

    Genoa and Sampdoria fans
    Genoa lighthouse

It's not only in England that this is a derby weekend. In Italy, it's Genoa v Sampdoria this Sunday.

Over to BBC World Service's Steve Crossman, who is in Genoa for the game: "Some derbies are about class division, financial division or religious or political differences. Sometimes it's jealousy of success or a huge gulf in finances… but not in Genoa.

"The Derby Della Lanterna (Lighthouse Derby) is about purity. My tour guide at Genoa's museum tells me that 'Genoa fans have a superiority complex'.

"He brilliantly describes Sampdoria as being 'condemned to succeed,' Why? Because Genoa fans think of their club as being pure, it is the oldest in Italian football. Sampdoria are accused of being mongrels, the result of a final merger between clubs that had combined several times previously.

"Genoa believe their rivals are hell bent on success and success alone. Club secretary Federico Valdambrini does little to dissuade that by turning up for our interview holding a fact sheet of Samp's derby wins. Genoa are the passionate pulse of this city and Sampdoria are a no less committed head. The battle to win hearts and minds arrives on Sunday night."

The most recent league derby between Arsenal and Tottenham at the Emirates wasn't the goal fest this game can usually be as it was settled by the solitary goal.

France forward Olivier Giroud was the man to get the vital goal as he enamoured himself with the Gunners faithful. Can Danny Welbeck do the same?

Arsenal also won 2-0 in their back yard when they played Spurs in the FA Cup last season.

Tottenham celebrate winning at Arsenal in 2010

Liverpool v Everton is not the only derby in Premier League town so let's have a little look at the north London match-up between Arsenal and Tottenham.

The last time Spurs won at the home of their local rivals was 20 November, 2010 when the boys from White Hart Lane came back from 2-0 down to claim a famous 3-2 victory. What a game.

Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh put the Gunners ahead but a certain Gareth Bale scored, along with Rafael Van Der Vaart and Younes Kaboul, to earn Tottenham three points.

Those might be happy memories for the Spurs faithful but on the flip side it was the only time they have won at Arsenal in 25 matches in all competitions since May 1993.

"It's been an overcast morning in Liverpool ahead of the 223rd Merseyside derby but the sun is just starting to break through above Stanley Park and the Reds will hope the patches of blue sky appearing overhead are not an omen for which colour will end up on top at Anfield today.

"To continue the weather theme, both sides have had a few clouds over their respective starts to the new campaign, especially in terms of their defending.

"Last time they met, here at Anfield at the end of January, they were a point apart in the top six and looking to maintain their impressive form. This time, the margin is the same but both are in the bottom half and seeking a springboard to get their seasons up and running. A derby win would definitely provide that, whoever gets it."

Four years ago Leicester striker Jamie Vardy was playing in the seventh tier of English football but last Sunday he was helping tear Manchester United apart as the Foxes beat the Red Devils 5-3.

He'll be in action at Crystal Palace today and here's a look at the rags to riches story of the former Stocksbridge Park Steels hitman:

2010-11: He was playing for FC Halifax Town in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier division, which is the seventh tier of English football. He helped the club finish top and earn promotion to the Football Conference.

2011-12: Vardy moved on to Fleetwood Town and on 20 September 2011 was sent-off in a 5-2 win over Kidderminster in their Conference game. But he scored 34 goals in 40 games goals as the Cod Army were promoted as champions into the Football League for the first time.

2012-13: Championship club Leicester win the race for his signature but struggled with just five goals in the season.

2013-14: Vardy had a better second season at the King Power Stadium as he scored 16 league goals to help the club to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League.

2014-15: Scores in a 5-3 win over Manchester United.

  427. Newspaper round-up

A certain golf clash might be dominating the back pages but, as usual, there is plenty of football news also doing the rounds. here's a quick round-up.

Robin van Persie revealed that Manchester United held a long inquest into last weekend's 5-3 collapse against Leicester. He said: "It was a confrontational meeting, but it was a very good meeting where everyone spoke up and showed their feelings." (Daily Mirror)

But Wayne Rooney has been calling his own impromptu meetings among the players to try and kick-start their season. (Sun - subscription required)

Kenny Dalglish says Everton's 15-year Anfield hoodoo is not psychological. In his Daily Mirror column, the Liverpool legend said: "It is just down to Everton not being good enough in those particular fixtures to get a result. I think it will be the same as usual on derby day."

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock will be judging today's opponents Leicester on how they beat Stoke 1-0 - rather than their 5-3 victory over Manchester United. "That's more realistic, I think," Warnock said. (Sun - subscription required)

Mauricio Pochettino says he might lie on the floor of the Spurs team bus on its way into the Emirates today, having dodged flying glass at a Newell's Old Boys v Rosario derby in Argentina: "Will I be lying down again when we go to the Emirates? I would like to. It is my habit, it is not strange for me. Yes, I enjoy the danger of derbies - I'm stronger in a hostile situation, I like it." (Daily Mirror)

It's not a derby rivalry but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and his Manchester City counterpart Manuel Pellegrini just cannot resist having a dig at each other.

The normally genial Pellegrini rarely says anything controversial but it seems if there's one person that can get his blood boiling it's the Portuguese. After City and Chelsea drew 1-1 last Sunday, the Chilean accused Chelsea of playing like a "small team" and compared them to Stoke. Ouch (the small team part not the Stoke part for you Potters fans)

Mourinho, in his response, referred to Pellegrini as Pellegrino. Childish but amusing. Both their sides will be action at 15:00 BST today with Chelsea hosting Aston Villa and City making the trip to Hull.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and Everton counterpart Roberto Martinez have vowed to continue with their attacking tactics, despite both enduring a slow start to the season.

  432. Magic of the FA Cup

Speaking of the FA Cup, it's second qualifying round weekend. Winners today only need another two victories to reach round one.

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair could play for Lancaster City at the age of 41. He retired six years ago and is assistant manager at the Lancashire side.

FC Romania, a side mostly of immigrants from the country, aim to upset famous FA Cup giant-killers Sutton United.

  435. Pardew v Savage

    Stoke v Newcastle (Mon)

    Newcastle manager Alan Pardew

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was not too happy with BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage's assertion that he "sounded like a broken man" following his side's 4-0 drubbing by Southampton.

Pardew let his feelings be known after the Magpies came back from 2-0 down to draw with Hull last week and now Robbie has had his say.

"I was surprised he picked me out to respond to, because I had heard a lot of people saying a very similar thing, but the important thing was the way that Pardew showed I was wrong about him," says Savage.

"He did not do that by criticising my comments, he did it with the way he came out fighting for his job in their draw with Hull last weekend.

"Afterwards, his voice was full of passion and energy, which was great to hear. Last week I also wrote that it was hard to see him surviving in his job for much longer - I would be delighted if he proved me wrong about that too."

Let's just digress for a moment and have a look at one of the back pages not dominated by the Ryder Cup.

Newcastle are not in action at Stoke until Monday but it seems, according to the Independent, it's not a game Magpies boss Alan Pardew can afford to lose.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has said that if the Tyneside outfit are beaten then that Pardew will pay with his job. Although, he has later claimed, through his lawyers, that his comments were "tongue-in-cheek". I'm sure Alan Pardew will see the funny side!!

Over on the BBC Sport Facebook page we have been asking you to pick your all-time Merseyside five-a-side team. Here are a few of your selections:

Francis John Herbert: Southall (best keeper ever to play for a Merseyside club, fact), Alan Ball (would run all day, you need one super fit player in five-a-side), Alex Young (he didn't run, he floated across the ground, also two-footed and a good goal scorer), Kenny Dalglish (capable of turning any defender that ever lived and a good goal scorer with either foot), Ian Rush (best goal scoring potential in five a side, and fast enough to get back and win the ball... Dixie Dean couldn't use his aerial prowess in five a side so Rushy get's the nod).

    Neville Southall and Ian Rush

Richard Hampton Whitehouse: Southall, Hansen, Gerrard, Alonso, Rush.

Shane Williams: Southall, Barnes, Dalglish, Rush, Suarez.

It was on this very day in 1999 that the blue half last left Anfield with three points in their bragging rights bag. Yes, 15 long years.

Everton's matchwinner on that occasion was a certain Kevin Campbell, with his fourth minute strike settling a fiery encounter.

Everton fans may just want to look away for a minute as I'm just going to recap on last season's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Reds were an irresistible force and basically blew the Toffees off the park with a 4-0 win. Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the lead with a header, Daniel Sturridge scored two goals in three minutes and Luis Suarez completed the rout.

Everton will be hoping there is no such repeat.

  440. Mersey misery

    Liverpool v Everton (12:45 BST)

Liverpool and Everton get the Premier League ball rolling in today's early kick-off and both of them desperately need to get their seasons on track, and quick.

The red half of Merseyside have lost three of their last five top-flight games and any hopes of matching last season's challenge for the title are slowly disappearing before their eyes.

Everton are a point worse off then their local rivals after two defeats, two draws and one solitary win in the league so far.

Both sides will be more desperate than usual for the win and, we may only be early into the season, but the stakes are already high.
