Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "The win is very important, you can imagine that. We played a very good first half with attractive football. We conceded again a goal from in set-plays. Maybe you can watch that their number 15 makes a foul on goalkeeper David De Gea.

"But OK, I am very happy that we hold the result until the end because it is very difficult to play against a team who have one more player but who also play a lot of high balls. I am very pleased with the attitude of my players."

"It's a big responsibility for young Ryan Mason of Tottenham. He's been out on loan at numerous clubs and he scored midweek in the League Cup, but these are the big boys tonight. And what a fantastic atmosphere inside the Emirates this evening."

What a game for Ryan Mason to make his Premier League debut in, the atmosphere is electric! He and his team-mates have not seen too much of the ball yet, though, with Arsenal stroking a few passes around, testing out the Spurs backline.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp: "We came back strongly after their goal and I felt we had every opportunity at that stage of the game but their centre-forward produced a world-class goal. Niko Kranjcar hit a fantastic free-kick but it hit the woodwork and we couldn't get the break.

"We didn't give up today and it was a much better performance. Charlie (Austin) took his goal well today and that's encouraging. He's proven that he can score goals in the Premier League. Southampton are a good side but I felt we stuck at it and we got a bit more belief in ourselves today and we've got to continue to believe."

Remember all that chat about Mesut Ozil playing in the number 10 role a few entries earlier? Well, at the moment, he appears to be playing wide left. That could well change soon enough though.

Hull City manager Steve Bruce: "We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. They nearly blew us away in the first 10 minutes. Maybe we showed them too much respect. We were brave or stupid to play two up top. I thought 'we're at home let's give it a go'. We had a couple of chances to take the lead but on the day we weren't good enough.

"They've got quality written throughout the team. The one thing you have to do is defend well. We've conceded four and not done that badly. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say you have been beaten by the better team.

"I was delighted with the attitude. We were brave and it nearly came off. It was pleasing."

"The playing surface here at The Emirates is getting a real soaking pre-match from the sprinklers. The presence of a former player is always guaranteed to enliven proceedings and the name of former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor brought a chorus of disapproval from the home fans when it was read out."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "It was very tough. We expected that. We told the boys that after last Tuesday (Capital One Cup win over Arsenal) that it'd be more difficult. All the credit to QPR about the second half. We know we have offensive qualities but in a difficult second half, to keep the spirit and the belief to win the game, it was a good compliment to the boys. The most important is that we believe in our way of playing and the second half was a fantastic second half from both sides."

Koeman on Pelle's goal: "You don't score a lot of that kind of goals because it was amazing. It's a great goal. That's a great feeling for him and a great feeling for the club and fans. The support was amazing today."

Even as a neutral I can't help but love derbies full of history like this one.

The players have finished their pre-match warm ups, the atmosphere is building. Not long now until the 174th north London derby gets under way.

"If you have someone like Mesut Ozil in that number 10 position, that Teddy Sheringham role, he will affect the game if he gets lots of the ball. Danny Welbeck needs some like Ozil on the ball to help him make an impact on the match.

"On what I've seen this season, Arsenal will finish above Spurs. The Gunners have the better players, whereas Tottenham's are all of the same standard."

  14. "Spurs are huffing and puffing"published at 17:19 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince: "That number 10 role allows you freedom and the goals Mesut Ozil set up and scored against Aston Villa were from the outside left. If you give him freedom that is what will happen, but playing where he has to track players, he is not going to do that.

"At Spurs, when you have Eriksen and Lamela, Adebayor and Soldado, they are quality players but the team is huffing and puffing all the time. It is a slow start for Spurs, they are adapting to Mauricio Pochettino. At Southampton meanwhile, Ronald Koeman has gone in and only had a few things to change, but Pochettino has had to change a lot of things at Spurs."

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "What do we have to do to win a football game? We did everything. We were the better team 11 v 11. We created chances and we were the team looking to have that winning goal.

"When they had a man sent off it was even more like that but we can't put the ball in the net and take advantage of our game. If we were terrible and couldn't pass the ball or create chances I would be worried but the way we played today I am calm.

"I will look to prepare to make sure we win the next game."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, speaking to Sky Sports: "We take into consideration the games players play and that is why I have decided to go with what I have today.

"I am not surprised, personally, when Mesut Ozil plays well. His position on the pitch is the wrong debate because even when he plays on the flank he plays with complete freedom. He is world champion on the left wing, let us not forget."

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce: "I've looked on the laptop and Kevin Nolan made a good run from deep and put the ball in the net. Unfortunately for us, the assistant saw something we didn't. It's unfortunate when you've worked so hard to get back in the game. We gifted Manchester United two goals and at 11 v 11 we had the best chances. Diafra Sakho could easily have had a hat-trick today."

This isn't just a picture of a mulleted Gerry Francis leaning against a tree. Oh no. This is a picture of the first Tottenham manager Arsene Wenger pitted his wits against. That was back in November 1996, with Arsenal winning that north London derby 3-1.

Since that game 10 Tottenham managers have come and gone. Mauricio Pochettino will today be the 12th Tottenham manager to face Wenger, with the Argentine getting his first taste of the north London derby.

History may not be on his side, but he hopes to be able to emulate the Arsenal boss' longevity, saying: "It's a dream to stay here like [him] or to have the time Arsene had in Arsenal. For this, I need to show my skill, I need to work hard, I need to get the results. You need to work with passion."

A win today would certainly do his long term prospects no harm.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "It was very good from the beginning. Even during the period the game was 1-0, when it could be open, it was always closed because we controlled the game. We had a big percentage of the ball. When we weren't dangerous we kept the ball. My four defenders and two midfield players were very solid. The result was a consequence of our dominance. The display allowed me to take off Diego Costa to give me a chance to play him on Tuesday [against Sporting Lisbon]."
