Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "These things can happen. We started very well. We were very unlucky with two individual mistakes through the game.

"He [Eliaquim Mangala] was very unlucky with the own goal and after that he arrived late for the penalty but we continue to trust him because he is a very good player who had very bad luck.

"During the week when we scored seven I felt that the team was tired. I think today we played a very good team. They defended very well and we scored four goals which was very good. It was very important to win three pints here because we cannot allow to drop any more points on Chelsea."

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie: "We played well. We had to fight in the second half and we did that. I'm very proud. The two debutants (Paddy McNair and Luke Shaw) did great. West Ham have been playing really well, so that's why we were happy with the goals we scored early on."

I wonder how Kevin Kilbane is getting on his attempts to see two derbies in one day?

He hot footed it to the train station after Everton drew 1-1 at Liverpool and I would imagine he is out of the tube and walking briskly to the Emirates, where Arsenal host Tottenham in just under half-an-hour.

We have been treated to 19 goals so far today in the Premier League, what has the north London derby got in store for us, I wonder?

Arsenal's £16m new boy Danny Welbeck got off the mark in the impressive 3-0 win at Aston Villa last week and he leads the attack - but manager Arsene Wenger surprisingly leaves £32m summer signing Alexis Sanchez on the substitutes' bench.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of his first north London derby - and gives Ryan Mason his Premier League debut here at The Emirates.

Arsenal XI: Szczesny, Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Wilshere, Arteta, Ramsey, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Naughton, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose; Capoue, Mason; Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela; Adebayor.

    Steve Claridge
at Stamford Bridge for BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Aston Villa were good for an hour today, but though they've got a good away record this season Chelsea are a completely different kettle of fish. I just don't know how many teams will come to Stamford Bridge this season believing they can get a result.

"If you came here before the game and you write a postscript of what you thought would happen, well the game played out exactly as you might have imagined. Chelsea pegged Villa back and it wasn't fast and furious but meticulous and precise. In the second half Jose Mourinho just sent his team out to grab another goal and put the game to bed.

"So an archetypal Chelsea performance - they looked very, very good."

"This win might mean more for Manchester United than winning easily by three goals. The defensive performance from Patrick McNair has been brilliant, less so from Marcos Rojo. But the resilience they have shown could really bring them together as a team."

Mat in Mattishall: What on earth is Wayne Rooney doing? Captain marvel with a goal one minute, captain disaster then next. Was he really the right choice?

Bayo, a Man Utd fan: Rooney is a great footballer who thrives on playing with a lot of aggression. Should now be mature enough to balance that aggression with tactfulness. A captain should lead by example.

James: That Rooney red card is a blessing in disguise. Rooney is United's weak link - we will have a better shape without him.

    Final Score

"The offside decision was marginal, and on second viewing I think the goal is just onside. But Manchester United will take a lot of credit from this defensive performance if the score stays the same. West Ham have been putting them under extreme pressure. If they can come out with the win it will mean a lot."
