Alan again goes close to a second goal of the night for Salzburg, but the Brazilian striker's low drive from the edge of the penalty box goes a couple of fee wide.
Celtic scorer Wakaso Mubarak blots his copybook with a bit of play-acting after a tackle. He did go down heavily but looked up at the referee before beginning to roll about in pain after a delay of a few seconds.
Anthony Stokes comes into the Celtic attack in place of Stefan Scepovic, with the Serbian having been quiet tonight apart from that ambitious long-range lob into the side-netting.
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has been virtually anonymous so far but bursts into life and sends a cross into the box that is headed away by Jonas Ramalho.
And Scott Brown's volley from all of 25 yards is diverted off the Brazilian defender's shin, deceiving goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi in the process.
Craig Gordon is the Celtic hero again with a great double save.
The goalkeeper pushes away Marcel Sabitzer's low drive one-handed and, when the ball leaps into the air, Alan's header is goalbound until Gordon recovers to palm the ball off the line and wide.
Stefan Scepovic almost puts Celtic back in the lead out of the blue with an audacious lob from 40 yards.
The Serbian striker's effort beats goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi but nestles into the side netting.
Alan threatens to score his second of the night with a nice turn at the edge of the Celtic penalty area.
However, his curling effort is turned wide by goalkeeper Craig Gordon at full stretch.
The Scottish champions will be delighted that the former Scotland number one managed to overcome long-term injury to sign during the summer as Gordon has been their saviour tonight so far.
Salzburg are swiftly back on the attack and Andreas Ulmer has the first shot on target of the second half, but goalkeeper Craig Gordon makes a simple save at the near post.
Celtic kick off the second half, with no substitutes being made by either side at half-time.
"When it comes to Europe, Efe Ambrose is not just up to it. He started his Celtic career well, but he is a liability and teams know they can attack him down that right-hand side."
"Your heart's in your mouth whenever a team attacks Celtic and they have to think about that as a team like this will cause problems."
Andrew Priestly: The exotically named 'Alan' scores against Celtic. Who'll score next for Salzburg? 'Dave' or 'Jim'. #bbcsportscot
Jenni: Wakaso Mubarak, welcome! What a way to mark your debut.
In this evening's other Group D fixture, Dinamo Zagreb are leading 3-0 at half-time against visitors Astra Giurgiu with El Arbi Hillel Soudani scoring a hat-trick.
The waves of attack continue to lap onto the Celtic shoreline and striker Marcel Sabitzer's grass-cutter flashes wide of the far post from 22 yards.
Celtic captain Scott Brown is booked for a trip on Swiss defender Christian Schwegler. The aggressive Scotland midfielder has to be careful now considering his aggressive style.
A through ball from Christoph Leitgeb finds Alan stealing in behind the Celtic defence. The shot from the Brazilian striker - full name Alan Douglas Borges de Carvalho - takes a deflection off defender Efe Ambrose and spins over stranded goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
