Sergio Aguero is virtually unplayable as he almost makes amends instantly. Younes Kaboul scampers after the little Argentine like a dog chasing its tail as Aguero twists and turns into space. He thunders an angled shot towards the Spurs goal but can only sting the palms of his nemesis Hugo Lloris.

"The first penalty from Sergio Aguero was very nonchalant, but credit to Hugo Lloris who goes down the middle. And a stroke of luck for Tottenham as Aguero tries the acrobatic on the rebound.

"It was a clear penalty again. Younes Kaboul was made Spurs captain, but I really wonder if he deserves to be in this team. He is having a nightmare today. His challenge was late, and he did not have to go to ground."

Sergio Aguero steps up for his hat-trick and drills the ball down the middle - and straight at Hugo Lloris who saves with his feet. The rebound balloons in the air and the striker goes for an acrobatic effort but hooks it over the bar.

  4. PENALTY FOR MAN CITYpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 18 October 2014

Referee Jon Moss points to the spot again. This time when Younes Kaboul wipes out David Silva in the penalty area. Little doubt about that one.

Christian Eriksen. Free-kick. 30 yards out. Over the bar.

Big pre-match news from St James' Park comes via journalist Iain Macintosh who reveals that Newcastle are no longer offering food in the press lounge - only soup.

That's one way to create some negative headlines...

"Normally Frank Lampard just gets on with it, but we saw he had his hands on his head as he came off on the stretcher and he looks in pain. Let's hope it's not a bad one, but it looks like a bad one."

Frank Lampard is applauded from the pitch on a stretcher, and is replaced by Fernandinho.

Frank Lampard stretches for the ball and appears to have felt something in his thigh. Immediately he signals to the bench. He's coming off.

"Mauricio Pochettino is on the touchline waving his arms and I think Spurs can press a lot higher; they are letting City dictate this game pace-wise. It is too easy for City. When Spurs haven't got the ball, there are not enough players putting a shift in."

City are picking Tottenham's pocket almost at will now and the artful dodger himself, Sergio Aguero, almost bags a hat-trick when he pounces on Jesus Navas's low cross but fires straight at Hugo Lloris.

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan at Etihad Stadium

"After a pretty subdued start, it is fair to say that Etihad Stadium is now bouncing. Some City fans were still celebrating their opener when Christian Eriksen equalised - I think they will keep their eyes on the action after Sergio Aguero restored their lead from the spot."

So far so good for new Cardiff boss Russell Slade. Quickfire goals from Federico Macheda and Peter Whittingham are leaving second-placed Nottingham Forest staring a first away league defeat of the season in the face.

"Nonchalant. You can see the confidence in Sergio Aguero. I don't think there is a better striker in the Premier League. That penalty just sums him up, as he sends the keeper the wrong way."

Spurs will say the penalty was soft, City will say it's a foul anywhere else on the pitch. There's little debate about the end result though - Sergio Aguero steps up and confidently sends Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

  17. PENALTY FOR MAN CITYpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 18 October 2014

Frank Lampard drives into the box but is sent tumbling when Erik Lamela bundles into his back. Penalty!

  18. Postpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 18 October 2014

Are Spurs not bothering with defending today? Jesus Navas swings in a corner and Fernando is given the freedom of the penalty spot to head home... but fluffs his lines. A let off for Spurs.

"It was three against two, Manchester City got so exposed there. They were caught in possession and they do play so wide that the two centre-halves were exposed. Christian Eriksen's shot came off the underside of Joe Hart's foot, who anticipated where the shot was going, but it went in on off the bar."

What a response! Fernando sloppily loses possession as Spurs charge forward. Roberto Soldado sees Christian Eriksen on his shoulder and the Dane thunders in, with the help of Joe Hart and the City crossbar, with an angled drive. That is about 90 seconds between City's opener and Spurs's equaliser according to my stopwatch.
