"Erik Lamela gave the ball way, Frank Lampard gave it to Sergio Aguero, and that is the sign of a top class striker who knows where the goal is. He just gets a little bit of space and the shot is absolutely top drawer, right across Hugo Lloris. A fantastic goal."

Manchester City are getting a tune out of their classical genius Sergio Aguero (12:16) today.

After Erik Lamela gives the ball away 30 yards from goal, City spring into action and Frank Lampard plays a simple pass into the feet of Sergio Aguero who takes a second to weigh up the situation, then steps inside and buries a shot into the bottom corner. Pure class.

Jake Nelson:, external Re 1249, are 69% of people not realising Moyes was way out of his depth and not good enough?

Leon Henshaw:, external Must be fancy dress at the Etihad today, with all those Man City fans dressed as plastic seats!

Ian Marks:, external I know it's only 10 minutes into the game but I'm happy it's still 0-0! A marked improvement.

Now it's City on the attack - David Silva overplaying it when Sergio Ageuro was in a good position behind the Spurs backline.

"Fantastic football from Spurs, everything was spot on and it would have been one of the goals of the season so far. But for me an experienced player scores there; Ryan Mason just has to lift it over Joe Hart and it is a goal, but he rolled it on the floor and Hart stopped it with his legs. A good period of play from Spurs. That was the old Spurs."

  6. CLOSE!published at 12:55 British Summer Time 18 October 2014

The moment I say there's not much happening, Tottenham slice through Manchester City like a hot spur through butter. Or something like that.

Roberto Soldado slips in Ryan Mason who is denied by the onrushing Joe Hart. Moments later Christian Eriksen fires over.

While the two teams pass the ball about without creating very much in the final third, allow me to shamelessly plug this video of Jon Macken's winner for City against Tottenham in that dramatic FA Cup meeting of 2004. And check out Sun Jihai's reaction at the end. He can barely believe what he's just seen.

The commentary position at Etihad Stadium

"Tottenham have started very sluggishly, with Manchester City dominating possession. Tottenham are sitting deeper and will play on the counter attack, which works if you are good at defending, but is risky. I would like to see them up the tempo and take the game to City a bit more."

Manchester City have settled into a patient passing game - trying to get Jesus Navas motoring down the right wing. James Milner is on the left flank. Can he play anywhere and still be mightily effective? I reckon he can.

    Man City v tottenham

Manchester City resume their title bid after the international break in what would appear a healthy-looking second place but with Chelsea five points clear at the top, Manuel Pellegrini's men know they need to beat Tottenham to keep the pressure on the Blues before they play Crystal Palace later this afternoon.

It seems a long time since results at Etihad Stadium were a concern but City have already dropped as many points here this season - four - as they did in the whole of last season on their way to the title, and Pellegrini is keen to put that right against Spurs. "Our away form has been excellent," he says in his programme notes. "Now we need to make sure our home form matches that."

"He's not got a job in the top flight and he wanted a job, so this is a brave decision from Neil Lennon to go and manage Bolton. And I think he'll do well."

Neil Lennon was revealed as Bolton's new manager on Sunday.

"After receiving a standing ovation as they walked on to the pitch, Manchester City Women's players are currently on a lap of honour at Etihad Stadium, parading the Continental Cup they won by beating Arsenal on Thursday, to chants of 'Champione, Champione'. It is the club's first major trophy, ending a 26-year wait."

You'd think Forest would have learned their lesson after Macheda's opening goal - but they haven't. The away defence fail to close down Peter Whittingham and he uses that hammer of a left foot to double Cardiff's lead from about 20 yards. Forest boss Stuart Pearce looks like he might go Psycho at the break...

Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel: "Our performances are getting better and better. Whenever a new manager comes in it takes a few months, and in December and January you will see us really click. But we are in the mix. We definitely want to get into the top four.

"Chelsea look very strong at the moment, but it is a long season, and at one stage you would expect Manchester City to find some consistency with the squad that they have. If we get a result here today that puts a different perception on things as well."

Federico Macheda - remember that name? Manchester United fans do after making that entrance as a teenage substitute against Aston Villa.

Now he's aiming to make a name for himself at Cardiff and is doing that after putting them ahead against second-placed Forest. His low drill into the bottom corner came just 48 seconds after Forest had an effort cleared off the line. Fine margins and all that...
