Check the expiry date on that contract. I think Emmanuel Adebayor could be due a new one.

Newcastle's defence get overloaded as it tries to suppress Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli down the Tottenham left and is not ready when Ryan Mason scoops the loose ball back to the far stick. Adebayor rises like a salmon to slam home the header.

"Newcastle are just coming into it a little bit more but I emphasise the word little. Tottenham are moving it around very well, the players are all wanting the ball and at the present time it is difficult for Newcastle to impose themselves on this game.

"It has been trying times for Newcastle United and for their supporters. When you sign so many new players it is very hard for them to gel as a team. I think both of these sides have found that."

Ayoze Perez, in for Papiss Cisse, gets a run at Younes Kaboul, and is left ironed across the turf by the Tottenham defender. From the resulting free-kick the ball breaks to Paul Dummett who wallops high and handsome from an ambitious distance.

Everton's opener has punctured some of the buoyant early atmosphere at Turf Moor. The visitors are keeping their stranglehold on the match as well, passing well before Romelu Lukaku snakes a shot wide from 20 yards.

The ball sits up invitingly 35 yards out and Jan Vertonghen fancies his chances of making light of the distance and beating Tim Krul.

The defender's effort is well hit, but veers off target like the exact opposite of Roberto Carlos thunderbolt in 1997's Tournoi.

Fans travelling north by train for the Manchester United v Chelsea game at Old Trafford have been facing delays after a series of cancellations from London Euston. The Virgin Trains website report that all lines have reopened after safety checks at Milton Keynes and Watford Junction.

Alec Stogdon: My train has finally left from London to Manchester. The reason for the delays - someone had thrown a filing cabinet over a bridge and on to a train. Truly mind boggling.

Sometimes I get like that about paperwork.

  13. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Tottenham arms shoot skywards as Darryl Janmaat blocks a cross rather clumsily in the box. They want a handball decision and a penalty. Referee Anthony Taylor's arms are not going anywhere though. He waves play on, but the tone has been set with the hosts dictating.

Everton have been slick from the start and a silky team move is capped with a soaring header from Samuel Eto'o as the Cameroon legend gets ahead of his marker and and bullets a header past Tom Heaton. A lovely assist served up from the left flank by Leighton Baines.

Roberto Martinez grits his teeth and clenches a fist in celebrations.

Former England manager Graham Taylor at White Hart Lane
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Bill Nicholson was one of the greatest if not the greatest manager of his time. When I became manager of Watford he would come and watch us play midweek.

"I was a young manager then and here was a manager with all those titles. I loved it. We weren't then in the first division, but we had this rise up the leagues and he once took me to one side and said: 'Those people criticising your direct style of play, just tell them to look at the league table.'

"A fantastic manager and it is quite right that we should be recognising his life today."
