Best chance for a long time at Celtic Park as Republic of Ireland force a corner. The initial cross is cleared, Jon Walters climbs highly to flick the ball on and Shane Long tries to divert it home from four yards out. David Marshall reads it well and clutches it.

Derby striker Chris Martin then comes on to replace Steven Fletcher up front for Scotland.

  2. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2014

He's still got it! Fine save from Roy Carroll to repel Romania skipper Razvan Rat, at the end of a lovely reverse pass. The left-back looked to dink it over Carroll but the former Manchester United man stood up big and saved with his chest.

Unsurprisingly the pace has dropped since the restart. But then Aiden McGeady shows his quality, whipping in a fine ball early, Jon Walters runs across his marker to meet it but his header is deflected over the top. The Stoke man has to leave the field as he has a big cut on his forearm and Scotland keeper David Marshall makes a fine claim.

Aaah! A sickening clash of heads between Northern Ireland skipper Gareth McAuley and Romanian counterpart Razvan Rat as they go up for a header. The kind that makes your teeth go on edge. That looked very, very painful but the two men are back on their feet after a brief hiatus.

Michael Blighe:, external I'm with Derek (20:53). Bring back the Home Nations, at least it's something England would have half a chance of winning!

Craig Smyth:, external Just seen the half-time scores. Does this mean Gibraltar are better than Brazil?

Republic of Ireland would not be in the 'Home Nations' tournament of course.

Derek Mitchell:, external Great game so far Scotland v Republic of Ireland. This is why they should bring back the Home Nations.

Hugh Dickinson:, external Scotland v Ireland might be lacking in quality, but it's great entertainment - can't keep my eyes off it!

Joel Ejike Ikemba:, external I think I'll want Scotland to win because of my Scottish girlfriend, I just want to dial her number and hear her happy.

Ex-NI defender John O’Neill on BBC Radio Ulster

"When Kyle Lafferty gets to run at the defence he causes Romania problems. The Northern Ireland defending has been good at times, they have rode their luck, but it's 0-0 at half time and that's an achievement.

Kyle Lafferty has caused Romania's defence problems

"Romania are still finding their feet as a team, maybe that's why the ground isn't completely full tonight, they aren't sure of their team and they're not sure which way their team could go. If Northern Ireland can get a goal it gives them something to hang onto and it puts Romania under real pressure.

"Northern Ireland do need to keep the ball better, but it all comes down to goals. Romania haven't scored one so it's so far, so good."

And the world champions are 3-0 up over Gibraltar at the break. Talk of record-breaking scores may go on hold - but then again fitness could be an issue after the break.

    Group D

The draw very much suits the Republic of Ireland this evening. Poland's 4-0 win in Georgia means that Scotland will be five points behind the Poles - who must be early favourites for that second spot. If you take Germany as favourites to win it that is...
