  6. Messi becomes La Liga leaderpublished at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

A few miles south of England, a small Argentine was rewriting the record books - figuratively speaking - by becoming the highest goalscorer in La Liga history.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick and his 253rd goal as his Barcelona side defeated Sevilla 5-1. The previous record was held by Telmo Zarra, who scored 251 goals in 15 years for Athletic Bilbao between 1940 and 1955.

Barcelona are back up to second in the table - two points behind Real Madrid. Champions Atletico are third four points adrift of their city rivals.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand: , external#Messi sees the game without any blurs whatsoever. Record goalscorer in La Liga....at 27yrs old.

There is more from Rio coming up....

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

    Robin van PersieImage source, Empics

On Louis van Gaal's use of Robin van Persie for Manchester United: "He had 12 touches of the football, three of them were corners. He wasn't comfortable on the right-hand side and Van Gaal is not getting the best out of him.

"He was getting pushed off the ball too easily and to make matters worse he got taken off again. In a game of that magnitude, he'll be bitterly disappointed."

Luckily for United, they had Wayne Rooney, scorer of their second goal. It has been a good week for the England striker, who also bagged against Slovenia and Scotland.

  12. Reds go marching on, on, onpublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

What about Manchester United? Fourth in the table. In what looks a one-horse race - OK, what is a one-horse race - the places behind Chelsea appear to be up for grabs.

Defensively, Louis van Gaal's team were magnificent in the 2-1 win at Arsenal - bear in mind Chris Smalling, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair were the three picked to marshal a potent attack.

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan was at the game - you can read his thoughts on the website.

  13. Postpublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

On Arsenal's defending: "Arsenal will be kicking themselves, they should have been out of sight at half-time. It's just naive and it doesn't look as if they're learning.

"They had nine players forward when Rooney scored the second goal. If there were two minutes left, you could understand it but when there's 15 minutes left, there's no need for it."

  14. Gunners misfiring... againpublished at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

    Sunday MirrorImage source, Sunday Mirror

Prior to the Sunday action, it's always worth a look back at Saturday's football entertainment.

Starting with Manchester United's 2-1 win at Arsenal. What is it with the Gunners? A stronger squad, but a bit of mess at the back.

They were formidable in attack, and had they converted a handful of their 23 efforts - that's right, 23 - then perhaps we would be full of praise for Arsene Wenger's side, however...

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere came off with an ankle injury, but he was in the thick of the action and even had time to nuzzle the chest of United's Marouane Fellaini - at least I think that's what he was trying to do.

Anyway, it seems the Gunners want to hold on to him by offering a new deal - let's see what the future holds for the 22-year-old England international.

  17. Chelsea driving offpublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

Diego Costa and Jose MourinhoImage source, PA

Maybe they should award 20 points to whoever beats Chelsea this season.

However, unlike in Formula 1, it might not have any impact come the final day of the season.

You see, Jose Mourinho's men are now seven points clear at the top after 12 games following Saturday's 2-0 win over West Brom - one bookmaker paid out last week on Chelsea winning the title.

Liverpool and Tottenham were expected to challenge the Blues this season, but both are a staggering 18 points behind.

They both have a chance to... well... reduce the deficit today:

Liverpool v Crystal Palace (13:30 GMT)

    Tottenham v Hull (16:00 GMT)
