  1. Post update

That is your lot for tonight though.

With a third of the season gone, and just nine points between the relegation zone and the Champions League spots, we have a humdinging a Premier League campaign in prospect.

Just as long as you ignore pesky Chelsea, seven points out in front, that is.

    See you all later.

Crystal Pace winger Yannick Bolasie: Good win today. The Premier League only gets harder - let's go CPFC.

  3. Week ahead

Your week ahead in football looks a little something like this.

Aston Villa v Southampton is your Premier League Monday night action.

Manchester City are fighting for their Champions League lives at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Liverpool are doing likewise against Ludogorets on Wednesday.

Tottenham at home to Partizan Belgrade and Everton away to Wolfsburg is your Europa League Thursday, with Celtic playing Red Bull Salzburg at Parkhead.

John Hutchinson: I have a feeling that in the next few weeks there's going to be a shake down in the Premier League. Some sort of natural order will emerge.

  6. Post update

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Gaston Ramirez

Gaston Ramirez was making his first start of the season for Hull.

A red card 50 minutes in means he will have to wait a while for his second.

It may be all a little academic, but I thought the Uruguayan looked bright before his early bath.

  7. Manager reaction

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Steve Bruce

Hull manager Steve Bruce on BBC: "For me the Premier League is the spectacle it is because of the honesty and ferociousness of it. It was petulant by Ramirez but it is not violent conduct. Vertonghen goes down as if he has been pole-axed.

"Vertonghen's actions are there for everyone to see but does he have to go over like that? I would be really disappointed if I was going to do something like that. The linesman 10 yards away and there is a difference between a flick and violent conduct.

"It spoils the game, we have lost the game on a decision.

"We were more like ourselves, we were excellent in the first half,. The whole game changed the moment the guy got sent off."

  9. What's next for Reds?

    Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

Liverpool's fixture list could go one of two ways for Brendan Rodgers.

It could be an ideal run of games against weaker opposition for his side to recover confidence. Or, lose most of them and it could be a one-way street to full-blown crisis.

They play Ludogorets away in the Champions League on Wednesday, Stoke at home on Saturday, Leicester away on 2 December and Sunderland at home on 6 December.

  10. Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

    BBC Radio 5 live

"It's just not happening for Liverpool; they are not scoring goals and letting too many in it's as simple as that, Teams were scared to death of Liverpool last season and it was all built on that attacking play. But they've had the heart of their side ripped out. They are bottom half of the league, but that's where they should be based on the way they've played. People no longer fear Liverpool, they have a lack of confidence and they are still a scalp. It's the worst of all the worlds for Brendan Rodgers."

  11. Post update

    Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

    Brendan Rodgers

Somewhere, crawling round the south circular right now, is a downcast Liverpool coach.

On board is a downcast Liverpool coach.

Brendan Rodgers has not been shy in pointing out his own and his side's shortcomings.

This is the little list in the centre of the story on the BBC Sport website:

    • His players' passing is too tentative
    • There is not enough intensity and togetherness
    • Confidence is low and the team is conceding poor goals
    • They are not aggressive and not playing as a team.

Sam Robson: The quality may not be in the Premier League, but from fourth down the tightness of the league makes for a fascinating season.

  13. Manager reaction

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to BBC Sport: "It was very important this victory because it is important to stay in our position. an important win for the supporters and the club. The second half at the beginning, we showed we were a better team, than the first half. Never easy to play against 10 players but in the end we deserved the victory.

"Hull scored early and it was difficult to manage. They tried to pressure us but in the second half we showed a lot of personality and character and we need to keep that in the next few games."

  14. Player reaction

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Jake Livermore

Hull midfielder Jake Livermore: "We are disappointed. We have not had time to reflect on the incident but the game changed with the sending off. Credit to Tottenham they kept the ball very well. Ramirez has apologised but the time he played he was magnificent. The league "

  15. Text us on 81111

Kevin in Hornchurch: How poor is the Premier League this season apart from Chelsea? Spurs are so poor, like most around them. All the money makes for good watch but the quality is lacking. You could end up with any three out of Top 10 for Champions League places.

  16. Post update

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Harry Kane

Tottenham goalscorer Harry Kane: "We were told to move ball quicker and make game of it. They were winning all the second balls. In the second half we changed it. The man sent off helped. I knew Christian Eriksen would hit the target [with the free-kick] and it came right for me."

Chris in Norwich: Is Spurs' only tactic this season to provoke the opposition down to 10 men?

Maggie in Suffolk: Once again a sending off has saved spurs. I don't know how we have won this game, but we will take it. They make my nerves bad every time they play these days!

Mac in Sheffield: If Daniel Levy had been told at the start of the season that he would be on equal points with Arsenal and Everton, then he would've been very happy. Strange places for all the supposed 'big' teams.

  20. Player reaction

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

Tottenham goalscorer Christian Eriksen: "In the first half we started slow then we were quicker. With the 10 men it helped us and gave us space. I'm going to sleep pretty well tonight [after scoring]. It's nice to see those teams expected to be in top four lose this weekend and us get the points. A few wins and we'll be up there again."

  21. Post update

    christian eriksen

Christian Eriksen has just picked up the man of the match award.

If a Tottenham player, rather than one of the hard-working Hull team, is going to get it, then he is the man.

A very healthy pass completion rate (92.2%), five chances created and the winning goal. Not too much to argue about there.

    Hull 1-2 Tottenham

Referee Craig Pawson and his linesmen are waiting in the middle of the pitch for Tottenham to finish applauding their fans and depart the scene.

They might be best to take their time. The home fans and Steve Bruce will want a word about the red card that changed the game.

  24. Hull 1-2 Tottenham

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the KC Stadium

"This might kickstart Tottenham's season, but I'm not totally convinced by them. They were disjointed at times, but because the Premier League is so tight a couple of wins and you are right back in there. It's a big win for them, but it hinged on the sending off and I'm sure Steve Bruce will have something to say on that. If Hull had got that second goal in the first half it might have been different."

Hull 1-2 Tottenham - Christian Eriksen

    Hull 1-1 Tottenham

Half-hearted appeals from the visitors as Aaron Lennon lifts the ball into Curtis Davies. More chest than hand.

  33. Post update

    Hull 1-1 Tottenham

Erik Lamela looks like he has controlled the ball in the box. He has, but with his arm. A free-kick which Allan McGregor will take his time over.

  34. SUBSTITUTION

    Hull 1-1 Tottenham

One to eat up the clock. Stephen Quinn is on to replace Robbie Brady and immediately trots across to mark Aaron Lennon.

  35. Post update

    Hull 1-1 Tottenham

Erik Lamela shows too much of the ball to Robbie Brady as he attempts to thread it through to Vlad Chiriches.

    Roberto Soldado is fouled
  38. Text us on 81111

Paul in London: I feel for Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs must look terrific in training, but that's because our defenders are all so clueless that they make Roberto Soldado look like Pele. How do you work on something in training if your players are incapable of taking on basic concepts?

Rich in Maidstone: looks like referees are going to bail Spurs out every time they are behind away from home this season.

Dan in London: It's great that Kane scored. But if it stays like this it's a poor result for Spurs.

  39. Hull 1-1 Tottenham

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the KC Stadium

"There's only so many times you can say with Roberto Soldado is 'getting into the right areas'. You have to judge a striker on his goals record."

  40. SUBSTITUTION

    Hull 1-1 Tottenham

A brief bit of confusion on the Spurs bench, but it is Roberto Soldado, rather than Erik Lamela, who will make way to allow Paulinho a run-out. A bit of a strange one with the game apparently there for the taking.

  48. Hull 1-1 Tottenham

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the KC Stadium

"Hull could really do with someone up front who could hold the ball up for then. Nikica Jelavic has run around, chased and harried but they need a player with presence to take the pressure of the defence. Steve Bruce needs to do something - it's just wave after wave of attacks from Spurs now."

  51. Hull 1-1 Tottenham

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the KC Stadium

"Harry Kane can't stop scoring can he? He's not had the best of games today, but he's once again in the right place at the right time. The ball rebounded back off the post and there's nothing Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor could do about that."

Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane celebrate
  52. GOAL

Hull 1-1 Tottenham - Harry Kane

Christian Eriksen is the source of Totttenham's leveller.

The Dane whips a fantastic shot over the wall and against the post from 25 yards out. Allan McGregor was beaten all ends up and the only touch he gets on the ball is to accidentally direct the rebound straight to Harry Kane.

He slots in the rebound from five yards for parity.

  53. SUBSTITUTION

    Hull 1-0 Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino sees Steve Bruce change and takes it as the signal to sharpen his own side's attacking edge. Aaron Lennon on in place of Mousa Dembele.

  54. CLOSE!

  55. SUBSTITUTION

    Hull 1-0 Tottenham

Steve Bruce has decided that his 10 men cannot afford to include a luxury like Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman is hooked with the less subtle skills of David Meyler thrown into the mix instead.

  56. Post update

    Hull 1-0 Tottenham

Hull could have been two or three to the good. Now it feels like a siege is brewing.

Steve Bruce is exasperated with the decision to send off Gaston Ramirez. It could well be a turning point and Ramirez, while provoked, has to bear some of the blame.

  57. Hull 1-0 Tottenham

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the KC Stadium

"It was a David Beckham-esque kick out by Gaston Ramirez but nowhere as aggressive. It was quite a soft sending off really with minimal contact but by the letter of the law I guess the referee has to send him off. With the extra man Spurs should dominate and make the pitch wide."

Gaston Ramirez chops down Jan Vertonghen
  58. RED CARD

    Hull's Gaston Ramirez

The red mist descended for Gaston Ramirez and the red card climbs out of Craig Pawson's pocket.

The Uruguayan was ruffled by the attentions of Mousa Dembele and Ben Davies and is tipped over the edge by Jan Vertonghen easing his knee into him as he lay on the floor.

Ramirez reacts by kicking out at Vertonghen, the linesman spots the retaliation and that is curtains for the Hull midfielder.

Hull's Gaston Ramirez is sent off
  59. Post update

Mike Hunkin: This Spurs defence is so terrible I get nervous just looking at it. Think I'll get another beer to numb the pain.

Jon Bagel: Same old, same old - no urgency, spirit or real desire from Spurs. We are one nil down and should be happy it is only the one goal against Hull.

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock on Match of the Day:

"That's why we're in the game for moments like this. This was a Neil Warnock team performance - they gave everything and did not shirk. They could have scored more goals. Our fans at home, wow, its like electric.

On conceding early: "We worked the last two weeks on the back four and wondered why we spent that much time. But after that Kels [Martin Kelly, who made a mistake for the goal] played really well.

"One or two journos said one or two of my players were unhappy. If that team was unhappy then I don't know where to go. I thought the whole club was very good today."

  69. Manager reaction

    Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

More from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

On Raheem Sterling: "He's played a lot of games. There is a lot of pressure on the young player. He's not an unknown and is a marked player. Raheem's confidence is not quite as high and the intensity not quite as high. He's an outstanding talent - he's going to have little spells like that."

On Mario Balotelli: "Mario came back from the Italy squad and it was still sore [groin] - we will assess that over the next few days."

On getting back to basics: "The confidence is low - we need to find a way. This has been a new phase - a lot of games, a lot less preparation time. We can't complain - we have to find a way to get results and show real size and power of the club. We need to get back to the basics."

On his future at the club: "I'm not arrogant to think I'll be in a job through anything. You have to win games and results. I've got a great communication line with the owners - we are honest and open with each other. I know that we have to get results and perform. The owners have to see development on the field - our development has been very good and fast. I will only ever do my best - I need to fight even harder and take responsibility."

  70. Manager reaction

    Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on Match of the Day:

"We made a really good start to the game - Rickie Lambert got his first goal with a terrific finish. We made the perfect start but failed to manage the game at 1-0.

"We are very, very disappointed with the performance and the result and as the manager it is something I need to take full responsibility for.

"Our confidence is not high at the moment, we do not see speed in the passing and we have to work even harder. It is a difficult moment, a tough time because of the results and we have to make sure we retain one focus - that of getting better and improving and very, very quickly because games come thick and fast."

  71. Post update

    Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool

Steve in Cardiff: The problem with Spurs is that players are bought because individually, they're good. Take Soldado - he's a poacher. He should be in the box poaching a goal like Defoe. Not running around seeking. Play players to their strengths!

  91. CLOSE!

    Hull 1-0 Tottenham

Tottenham should be 2-0 adrift as Hull miss two fine chances.

First Robbie Brady demands a good save out of Hugo Lloris with a snap-shot from 15 yards. Lloris has to be smart again to keep out a thumper from Gaston Ramirez shortly after and looks on relieved as Hatem Ben Arfa clumps the rebound over the top.

    Hull 1-0 Tottenham

If you come that far as a goalkeeper, you have to claim the ball. Hugo Lloris, under pressure from Curtis Davies, drops a free-kick right at Gaston Ramirez' feet. Ben Davies bails out his team-mate with a block on the Uruguayan. It was a crucial one as well.

  97. GOAL

Hull 1-0 Tottenham - Jake Livermore

Jake Livermore does not celebrate against his old club, but he must take some personal satisfaction from that strike.

Tottenham clear the initial ball into the box through Federico Fazio, but fail to apply enough pressure on their former player. Livermore controls, gets his head up and drills a low shot into the bottom corner from 20-odd yards.

That is the sort of drive and directness that Tottenham could do with in their own midfield.

He signed Suarez after all. Still a big mistake letting him go for me. How many other managers are there around who have won the league?

James in London: I don't think anyone will deny Liverpool overachieved last season. This meant Rodgers created a rod for his own back. When he came in two seasons ago, we all said he needs time. The fact that we had a great, perhaps lucky season last year, does not change that fact.

Mo: I've said it a million times and will say it again, Rodgers is clueless. In Glen Johnson and Dejan Lovren your offered nothing but defensive errors, Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling are playing poorly, and we have no good striking options. What was the transfer market for again?

Rickie is the type of striker that needs a run of games. Mario Balotelli is missing with a groin problem that kept him out of the Italian squad. We haven't scored anywhere near the goals we'd like."

On last year's 3-3 at Selhurst Park towards the end of the season: "I've banished memories. People look at that game as the one that cost us the title, but it was game before. Disappointing the way it ended, but I didn't think it was the game that dictated where the season went."

On Palace: "They are a difficult team to beat. They defend well and have really honest players. They showed great resilience last year. They have a lot of quality and play the game on the counter. Yannick Bolasie is a talent and Jason Puncheon has a great left foot. Palace have got pace that can penetrate behind."

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "Hull have been on quite a bad run of form and not been getting results. They'll target this one and see themselves getting a win."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "Spurs have changed that many managers. They definitely need to win today and get moving up table. This manager is the one owner Daniel Levy will stick with."

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "As a one-off game it will be difficult for them. I think it's more the hype surrounding it. However, I think once the players settle down and get that initial spell in the game over with it will become easier."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "There's a real freshness about the England camp. They are all excited about it. There's a lot of experience about that team and plenty of players who can rise to the occasion. If they can put in a performance in that game there might be an appetite for more."

  215. Whelan situation

    MOTD2 Extra

Discussing Wigan owner Dave Whelan who is being investigated by the FA over comments about Jewish and Chinese people.

Former Wiagn midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "I know Dave Whelan. He used to come in and go around the training ground. I don't believe he's racist. From these findings he said if he's found guilty he'll walk away. To hand the reins to his grandson would be early. Probably long term he sees his grandson David as his long-term successor."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "The FA have a headache of how to punish him if he's found guilty. Can you ban an owner? They would struggle to find the right punishment. He would punish himself if found guilty by quitting, but the FA would need to set a precedent."

Whelan has denied being racist. In an interview with ITV News, Whelan added that he does not expect to be found guilty because "I'm absolutely anti-racist, always have been, always will be".

    MOTD2 Extra

Discussing Liverpool's goalscoring problems this season and the the performances of strikers Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "Because Mario Balotelli isn't producing there will be doubts in the dressing room. Even from a work rate point of view you are not seeing him putting it in. If you're not getting the goals you need to give that. Patience runs thin at a club like Liverpool and you need to produce quickly. The other players like Adam Lallana and Lazar Makovic need time to deliver, but this is a huge game for Liverpool against Palace."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "He's not even playing today and we are still talking about Mario! Rickie Lambert has been champing at the bit to play. It's clear he needs to start games, play regularly because he needs that sharpness and keep the fitness ticking over. It's difficult to judge him on 10 or 15 minutes here. I think Liverpool fans have to be realistic about when they will see the best out of him."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "If Mario doesn't produce, other players will resent him. Could Divock Origi come in January? They would need to renegotiate the deal in January with Lille and I understand that the player wants to come. With Daniel Sturridge out injured and Balotelli struggling they look like they need him."

Discussing the struggling teams at the bottom end of the table.

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "When you are at the bottom and conceding goals as QPR are - that is going to bite you in the back. Burnley striker Danny Ings had been struggling with injury at the start of the season but he was on the mark again on Saturday. I saw him last year and thought he could go on to be a Premier League striker. Leicester boss Nigel Peraon is realistic, he knows there will be difficult periods for his team this season. The Foxes will be there and thereabouts in terms of the bottom three all season."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "I would be surprised if QPR went on a run of three or four wins on the bounce. I don't think they are playing together as perhaps, for example, Newcastle - you wonder where the goals are coming from and they look like conceding all the time. Leicester were defending tightly at the start of the season and Leonardo Ulloa was scoring but the goals have dried up now. It would be different if they had somebody else chipping in with goals."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "I do not think QPR have been right for a while. They look like a team that have been in a slump for some time. Burnley boss Sean Dyche at the start of season showed his season a results map of Crystal Palace last season - said that like with Palace their start will be horrendous but stick with it, results will come. And they are starting to."

  226. Newcastle's rise

    MOTD2 Extra

Discussing Newcastle's remarkable turnaround. They were bottom of the league on 22 September and are now fifth after a 1-0 win over QPR.

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "In the League Cup at Manchester City, you thought it'd be a walkover, but manager Alan Pardew got them playing that night. They were also 2-0 down at Hull then Papiss Cisse comes on and scores twice - it changes the dynamics. They are in a comfortable position - they won't finish in the top four, but in the top half."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "Pardew is getting the best out of the players. He's had to sell players again, but got striker Ayoze Perez for £1.5m and he's had to play him. Then Gabriel Obertan, who didn't get many chances last season, scored a crucial goal against Leicester and got the run going."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "They go on these big runs, circle the wagons and get to the top half of table, then lose games. He's had to assimilate new players. Once he's decided his selection then there's consistency. I've given up trying to predict Newcastle."

Discussing the performance of Arsenal's defence against Manchester United and the frailties of the Gunners' backline following their 2-1 loss to the Red Devils.

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "The way Arsenal played, they needed to keep things defensively tighter. They were exposed at the back, particularly with Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal, they are individual mistakes. It's naivety and what you expect from young players. You wouldn't see that from a Chelsea back four."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "Arsenal should have won that game, and we shouldn't be discussing this. You have to wonder how much say is coach Steve Bould having? Surely he can get his experience and opinion and across on the training ground? Chelsea have raised the bar for defence. Nobody seems to be up there, you look at Liverpool and Manchester City and they have frailties as well."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "Is the culture of the team right? Jack Wilshere is disciplined in performance for England against Scotland but he was all over the place against United. There isn't a culture at Arsenal where if they make a mistake they are pulled up on it. At Chelsea you know if you make a mistake you know Jose Mourinho will be straight on to you."

  231. Man Utd on the up?

    MOTD2 Extra

Discussing Manchester United's 2-1 over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday - and how significant it might be for Louis van Gaal's team.

Former Republic of Ireland, Everton and Sunderland midfielder Kevin Kilbane: "It was backs to the wall and is a big result for them this season. Arsenal created numerous chances, and perhaps United were fortunate. But it was the manner of the result and they look in good shape for the rest of the season. United's young players are starting to put some of their more experienced big earners under pressure."

Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower: "It was all about the result for United. If one of those two teams could get a result then it would give the players that belief. For United's young players it will help them kick on into December. United's young defence didn't buckle and for young players like Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett they will come back to Manchester full of pride. A year ago McNair couldn't get a game for their Under-21 side and he's come into the senior side and grown."

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft: "Louis van Gaal said it wasn't his best performance but it was his best result. They were without three first-choice defenders, a couple of kids at the back and were under siege for the first 30 minutes. To get that result after the international break it felt like a big result. There are a few weakness in that United team but some strengths starting to emerge."

Luke Parsons: David Beckham inspired me to play football. I always tried to bend it like Beckham! Rarely happened though. He was a dead ball artist.

On Chelsea after the leaders' 2-0 victory over West Brom: "They're miles ahead. The best team in the Premier League and I think they'll win it by a mile.

"They didn't start brilliantly against West Brom but they started to get balls into the box and Diego Costa thrives on that."

  243. Chelsea continue charge

Before we conclude this early segment of Sunday's football live text, I guess I have to mention new champions... I mean leaders Chelsea.

They cruised a 2-0 win over 10-man West Brom on Saturday, Diego Costa scored again and Mourinho again played down the fact his side are outstanding title favourites.

  247. Pellegrini should get inspired

    #getinspired

Anyway, maybe Manuel Pellegrini needs to take himself away from the maelstrom that can be Premier League football and head on down to Prestwich, Salford or Failsworth today. Maybe he can get inspired by Sunday league football ahead of his side's clash against Bayern Munich...

  248. Post update

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

On Manchester City: "Going forward, there's no problem but defensively, I think they're a million miles off where they should be. They're all over the place. If they defend like that against Bayern Munich in midweek, they'll be in big trouble."

  249. City on song

    Manuel Pellegrini

Plucky (champions) Manchester City managed their second win in seven games with a 2-1 win over Swansea.

Football folk have been a little bit critical of Manuel Pellegrini's men of late, but at the start of Saturday they had two more points than they had at this stage in last season's title-winning campaign.

Here's the bad news - they are eight points behind Chelsea. Match of the Day's Alan Shearer isn't impressed by them either.

  250. Rangers struggling

    Sunday Mail

Over in Scotland, Rangers need to get inspired by somebody or something soon - they are nine points behind leaders Hearts in the Scottish Championship after losing 2-0 to them on Saturday.

Gers manager Ally McCoist believes the gap is "not insurmountable". Hmmm...

    James Tomkins

On West Ham defender James Tomkins, who went down clutching his face after Everton's Kevin Mirallas pushed him in the chest: "It's embarrassing. I did something similar in a cup final once, to try to gain an advantage. I look back on it and I was embarrassed and humiliated. It's not something you want to see."

  254. Post update

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

On Stoke City winger Victor Moses' apparent dive against Burnley: "I've given him the benefit of the doubt previously but I can't protect him at all on this occasion. Plain and simple, it's a dive. He thinks he's going to get hit by Michael Duff but the tackle doesn't come, he just goes down anyway.

"Why Martin Atkinson didn't show him a yellow card, I'm not sure. It's not nice to see."

On Everton's Ross Barkley, who took a tumble during Everton's 2-1 win over West Ham: "He's very guilty of a dive and you could see he's embarrassed because he gets up half a second later. Hopefully he'll learn from it because we don't want to see that."

  261. Messi becomes La Liga leader

    Lionel Messi

A few miles south of England, a small Argentine was rewriting the record books - figuratively speaking - by becoming the highest goalscorer in La Liga history.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick and his 253rd goal as his Barcelona side defeated Sevilla 5-1. The previous record was held by Telmo Zarra, who scored 251 goals in 15 years for Athletic Bilbao between 1940 and 1955.

Barcelona are back up to second in the table - two points behind Real Madrid. Champions Atletico are third four points adrift of their city rivals.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand: #Messi sees the game without any blurs whatsoever. Record goalscorer in La Liga....at 27yrs old.

There is more from Rio coming up....

Eben Philip: Two teenagers in the heart of defence against Arsenal. Louis van Gaal -The only manager with guts to do that in a crunch game.

  266. Post update

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

    Robin van Persie

On Louis van Gaal's use of Robin van Persie for Manchester United: "He had 12 touches of the football, three of them were corners. He wasn't comfortable on the right-hand side and Van Gaal is not getting the best out of him.

"He was getting pushed off the ball too easily and to make matters worse he got taken off again. In a game of that magnitude, he'll be bitterly disappointed."

Luckily for United, they had Wayne Rooney, scorer of their second goal. It has been a good week for the England striker, who also bagged against Slovenia and Scotland.

  267. Reds go marching on, on, on

What about Manchester United? Fourth in the table. In what looks a one-horse race - OK, what is a one-horse race - the places behind Chelsea appear to be up for grabs.

Defensively, Louis van Gaal's team were magnificent in the 2-1 win at Arsenal - bear in mind Chris Smalling, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair were the three picked to marshal a potent attack.

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan was at the game - you can read his thoughts on the website.

  268. Post update

Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

On Arsenal's defending: "Arsenal will be kicking themselves, they should have been out of sight at half-time. It's just naive and it doesn't look as if they're learning.

"They had nine players forward when Rooney scored the second goal. If there were two minutes left, you could understand it but when there's 15 minutes left, there's no need for it."

  269. Gunners misfiring... again

    Sunday Mirror

Prior to the Sunday action, it's always worth a look back at Saturday's football entertainment.

Starting with Manchester United's 2-1 win at Arsenal. What is it with the Gunners? A stronger squad, but a bit of mess at the back.

They were formidable in attack, and had they converted a handful of their 23 efforts - that's right, 23 - then perhaps we would be full of praise for Arsene Wenger's side, however...

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere came off with an ankle injury, but he was in the thick of the action and even had time to nuzzle the chest of United's Marouane Fellaini - at least I think that's what he was trying to do.

Anyway, it seems the Gunners want to hold on to him by offering a new deal - let's see what the future holds for the 22-year-old England international.

  272. Chelsea driving off

    Diego Costa and Jose Mourinho

Maybe they should award 20 points to whoever beats Chelsea this season.

However, unlike in Formula 1, it might not have any impact come the final day of the season.

You see, Jose Mourinho's men are now seven points clear at the top after 12 games following Saturday's 2-0 win over West Brom - one bookmaker paid out last week on Chelsea winning the title.

Liverpool and Tottenham were expected to challenge the Blues this season, but both are a staggering 18 points behind.

They both have a chance to... well... reduce the deficit today:

Liverpool v Crystal Palace (13:30 GMT)

    Tottenham v Hull (16:00 GMT)
