    St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright

"Rangers have done well to get through the leagues and I imagine they are targeting the cups. They are beatable. The bookies have them as favourites and who am I to argue with them? We want to stay in the game as long as possible. We need to make sure we make it a hard night for Rangers and I feel we have the players who can do that."

Rangers fans' group Sons of Struth is organising a boycott of the League Cup tie. Spokesman Craig Houston and his fellow supporters are unhappy at the role being played by chairman of the football board Sandy Easdale, they are not impressed with what Mike Ashley has done at Newcastle United, and the Sons of Struth feel that the merchandise deal between the club and Mike Ashley benefits the businessman much more than it does Rangers. On top of that, they believe the club is not being run by the board, but by "faceless investors".

Well, there has been yet more upheaval up the marble staircase at Ibrox. Derek Llambias, the former managing director of Newcastle United and an associate of Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley, has been appointed a consultant to the Championship club. He told reporters at Glasgow Airport last night that he was applying to become the Rangers chief executive, following Graham Wallace's resignation, so we will need to see if the consultancy role is a temporary position, He will be at the game tonight.

Looking at those teams for the match tonight, the only change to the Rangers side that beat Dumbarton is midfielder Ian Black returning from a dead leg in place of Stevie Smith.

Saints boss Tommy Wright has also opted against tinkering too much after their weekend draw with Partick, with his only alteration Michael O'Halloran coming in for James McFadden.

Rangers' record against top-flight opposition since they dropped into the lower leagues is not terribly impressive. The Ibrox men can boast just one win against Motherwell two years ago on top of their victory over Inverness in the last round of the League Cup from five ties so far.
