Stoke midfielder Steven Nzonzi speaking in the Old Trafford tunnel: "Recent results have not reflected our performances. We played well against Liverpool and it was hard to concede that goal in the last five minutes.

"We know Manchester United are a big team and when you give them too much respect it builds up their confidence, and makes them even better than they already are. We hope we can be strong tonight."

So Manchester United are back in the top four. To stay?

With an attacking line-up containing Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj they should be at least halfway there.

There are unconfirmed reports that Wayne Rooney is not in the team tonight.

Victory tonight and Louis van Gaal's side would end the night just two points behind neighbours and defending champions Man City.

That 4-0 gubbing at MK Dons is fast becoming a horrible memory...

'Man, 34, not as fit as he once was.'

That is the headline news around Anfield this season as skipper Steven Gerrard gets used to some regular rotation and time on the bench.

Gerrard was left out of the starting line-up for Saturday's 1-0 win over Stoke and his contract is up at the end of the season. Will he be back in tonight? He's just got off the team bus.

John Barnes told BBC Radio 5 live: "While I can understand Steven Gerrard is not the player he once was, he is still very, very important to the club.

"At this stage of his career, his best at this moment is still good enough."

The top three sides are not in action this evening, saving themselves for tomorrow night, so it's life at the bottom which will fall under the microscope.

Leicester sunk to 20th spot at the weekend so a win at home to out-of-sorts Liverpool would be very timely indeed.

With QPR and Burnley also in action, it's Steve Bruce's Hull side who could find themselves propping up the charts by the end of play...

I returned from a weekend away on Sunday night to discover my entire street had put up Christmas decorations. Suburbia bedecked in tinsel and flashing lights.

Concerned I had stumbled into a Flight of the Navigator-style nightmare and missed several weeks of my life, I had to double check that it was in fact still November.
