MOTD's Steve Wilson at Stamford Bridge

"A season which is in danger of becoming a procession became a little more interesting over the weekend with Chelsea dropping points at Sunderland and Manchester City putting in arguably their strongest performance of the season in winning at Southampton.

"The gap at the top is now six points; and although Chelsea must still be considered big title favourites, maybe, just maybe, the contest will still actually be a contest in the spring.

"Seasoned watchers of both London clubs will not be expecting Tottenham to deliver. Spurs' last win at Stamford Bridge was back in 1990, and in the 57 meetings home and away since then, Tottenham have won just five. It's a paltry return."

Arsene Wenger was the subject of some minor supporter protest at the weekend - as fans grow increasingly frustrated at a perceived lack of progress at the club.

But Wenger continually delivers Champions League football, always gets to the knockout stage and won the FA Cup last season.

Are Gunners fans greedy for wanting more? Or should Arsenal be challenging harder for the title and going further in Europe?

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at the Emirates

"Arsenal face Southampton at The Emirates with confidence lifted by victories against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and at West Bromwich Albion at the weekend. This was still not enough for a handful of Arsenal fans who brandished a banner at the final whistle at The Hawthorns emblazoned with the message: 'Arsene - Thanks For The Memories But It's Time To Say Goodbye'.

"Southampton, in contrast, had the first serious setback of their marvellous season so far when they lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City. No shame at all in losing to the reigning Premier League champions but manager Ronald Koeman will be watching closely to see how his players react."

Southampton's superb season is perhaps just beginning to hit its first significant hurdle. A disappointing showing in a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa was followed up with a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

But the Saints remain in third place, and a win at the Emirates this evening could see them leapfrog City. Impossible? Of course not. They won there in the League Cup just a few short months ago...

Tonight sees Tottenham head to Stamford Bridge, while Manchester City travel up to Sunderland. Two sides heading into territory which normally comes with a cast-iron guarantee of a defeat.

We've all been there. It's one of the more peculiar rituals of the football fan - spending hard-earned cash on a day out, knowing full well that your side will more than likely be on the end of a shoeing. So why do we do it?

What is your away ground which carries the most dread? Which stadiums have you been to on multiple times and never managed even a single point? Seen four losses at Tranmere down the years? Always get beat at Bristol Rovers? Never been to Grimsby and won?

And what are the details that still make it all worthwhile? The pub you stop at on the way home, the chippy you always visit, the parking space that is always available.

Manchester City's last win at Sunderland came way back in August 2008, with Shaun Wright-Phillips bagging a brace. Six years has seen some serious movement at both clubs.

Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany both started for City in a 3-0 win - but look at some of the names in both squads! Forgotten men, journeymen, big signings and flops everywhere you look.

    Sunderland 0-3 Manchester City, 31 August 2008.

Sunderland: Craig Gordon; Phil Bardsley, Nyron Nosworthy, Danny Collins, Pascal Chimbonda; Steed Malbranque, Andy Reid, Kieran Richardson, Grant Leadbitter, El-Hadji Diouf; Djibril Cisse. Spurs fans are long overdue a win at Chelsea, and Manchester City fans will be feeling the same about the trip up to Sunderland.

The Black Cats are fast becoming the champions' bogey side. Gus Poyet's men have lost just one of the last six Premier League games against City, and Manuel Pellegrini's lot have failed to win their last five league visits to the Stadium of light - losing the last four in a row.

    Five in a row?

Chelsea are unbeaten in all competitions this season and the Premier League title race was beginning to resemble a fun run. Jose Mourinho's side have looked a class above. One bookmaker has already paid out on them to take the title.

But one goalless draw at Sunderland at the weekend, coupled with a return to form from Manchester City, and it all looks a lot more interesting.

If Tottenham can find that first win at Stamford Bridge since 1990 then we may have a cracking Christmas on our hands at the top of the table...

"Nayim takes the corner short. Gets it back, looks up and floats the cross to the back post - Lineker's free! It's there!

"Gary Lineker with the 88th-minute winner! Spurs win at Stamford Bridge!"

It is 24 years since Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker ghosted in to plant a header into the net and give Tottenham a 2-1 win at Chelsea. They haven't managed a single repeat win since.

February 1990: Sinead O'Connor was number one with Nothing Compares 2 U, Nelson Mandela was facing his penultimate day in prison, The Cold War was coming to a dramatic end, Europe was seeing sweeping change, inflation was at 9.5% and Jose Mourinho was just a PE teacher in Lisbon.

Much has changed since that winter's afternoon in west London. Can Tottenham end a generation-long wait and win at the Bridge tonight?
